On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.

Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.

There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees.

Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple(枫树)makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are

the best climbing trees.

The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that.

The seasons change just outside the door. We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’(杨树)putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local steam as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.

I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.

It takes confidence to make a new start —there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “W ell, I’m writing a navel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.

Then I met an agent(代理商)who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.

The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal — that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.

It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck —of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s n o end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract (合同)of the publisher — to be a published writer — is unbelievably rewarding(有回报的).

49. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean

A. I was waiting for good fortune.

B. I was trying to find an admirable job.

A. to finish the writing course

B. to realize her own dream

C. to satisfy readers’ wish

D. to earn more money

51. How did the writer feel halfway with the novel

A. Disturbed.

B. Ashamed.

C. Confident.

D.

Uncertain.

52. What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph

A. It pays to stick to one’s goal.

B. Hard work can lead to success.

C. She feels like being unexpectedly lucky.

D. There is no end in sight when starting to do something.

In a recent announcement, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)said that they have joined forces to offer free online courses in an effort to attract millions of online learners worldwide. Beginning this fall, a number of courses developed by teachers at both universities will be offered online through a new $60 million program, known as edX. “Anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world can use our online courses,” Harvard President Drew Faust said during a meeting to announce the plan.

MIT has offered a program called OpenCourseWare for ten years that makes materials from more than 2,000 classes free online. It has been used by more than 100 million people. In December, the school announced it also would begin offering a special certificate, known as MITx, for people who complete certain online courses. Harvard has long offered courses to a wider population through a similar program.

The MITx will serve as the foundation for the new learning platform. MIT President Susan Hockfield said more than 120,000 people signed up for the first MITx course. She said Harvard and MIT hope other universities will join them in offering courses on the open-source edX platform.

“Fasten your seatbelts,” Hockfield said.

Other universities, including Stanford, Yale and Carnegie-Mellon, have been experimenting with teaching to a global population online.

The Harvard-MIT program will be monitored by a not-for-profit(非

盈利的)organization based in Cambridge, to be owned equally by the two universities. Both MIT and Harvard have provided $30 million to start the program. They also plan to use the edX platform to research how students learn and which teaching methods and tools are most successful.

Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted(预测)in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains and ecosystems.

Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say.

Increased carbon dioxide(CO2)in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen, while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth.

“Predicting species’ reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the rese arches of several . universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services.

The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated(低估)the speed of flowering by times and leafing by 4 times.

“Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance —for both leafing and flowering —that results from temperature increases,” the study said.

The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.

Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis(光合作用)to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.

Scientists believe the world’s a verage temperature has risen by about 0.8℃ since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃ every ten years since 1979.

So far, efforts to cut emissions(排放)of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2℃ this century — a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.

57. What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1

A. Plants’ rea ction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystem.

B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists’ expectation.

C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.

D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.

58. We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that ______.

A. plants’ flowering is times faster than leafing

B. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents

C. scientists should improve the design of the experiments

D. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change

59. Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because _______.

A. they can prove the climate change clearly

B. they are very important in the food chains

C. they play a leading role in reducing global warming

D. they are growing and flowering much faster than before

60. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world’s temperature

A. It has risen nearly 0.2℃ since 1979.

B. Its change will lead to weather extremes.

C. It is 0.8℃ higher in 1979 than that of 1990.

D. It needs to be controlled within 2℃ in this century.

One Possible Version:

Dear Ms Li,

I am very happy to have you as our English teacher.

As the world is becoming a global village, English is getting more and more important, so mastering English means we can see the world through a new window.

My English is just OK and the two main problems in my study are that I feel it difficult to learn words by heart, and that I often feel nervous when speaking English. I really hope that you can give me good advice on how to memorize new words. Another suggestion is to give us more chances to practice speaking. I believe we can make much progress in English with your help.

Thank you!

A. Kids' imaginations are in overdrive when it comes to composing Christmas lists - as they ask for a live walrus(海象), the power of invisibility(隐身) and Taylor Swift. Christmas is less than two months away, and little ones are already planning their letters to Santa. But one survey has revealed the weirdest items to turn up on Christmas lists, and they include mythical monsters and mega-selling pop stars. Conducted by GAME, the study also reveals a significant break from festive tradition when it comes to writing wish lists. One in three, 29%, children now use technology such as iPads or mobile phones instead of the traditional pen and paper, while a further one in five (19%) will rely on parents to take note of all the things they point at during TV adverts and during trips to the shops. With more than three million lists likely to be drafted, parents are prepared for a flurry of requests including many that even Santa would struggle to achieve. As part of the study, parents were asked to reveal some of the weird and wonderful items that made it onto their child's Christmas lists. Fred Prego, marketing director at GAME, says: "Choosing what to get your kids at Christmas can be a bit of a minefield(雷区).” As the research shows, most kids will be making note of the things that they want this half term and a lot of lists are going to be written." 21. The underlined word “overdrive” in paragraph one means _______. A. running with a high speed B. slowing down sometimes C. driving forth and backwards D. getting stuck somewhere 【答案】:A 【解析】:根据背景可知,孩子们在选择圣诞礼物时,要求颇多,在脑风暴什么礼物时,想象力也十分充沛。overdrive v.& n.大脑“高速运转”。

2002 Directions:Translate the following passage into Chinese and put your translation on the ANSWER SHEET. Since 1981,farmers in Holland have been encouraged to adopt“green”farming techniques that were thought to benefit plant and bird life.Farmers who have voluntarily adopted these measures are compensated by the European Union. The goal of the program is to work against the negative effects of modem fanning, such as declines in species diversity and the disturbance of local nesting grounds. The“green”methods of farming cost the European Union about 1.7 billion Euros annually. This is about 4 percent of the budget for“Common Agricultural Policy,”and the compensation is expected to rise to 10 percent within the next few years. Various forms of“green farming”employed around the world have proved successful, and all new methods thought to be environmentally sensitive should be subject to sound scientific evaluation to determine whether they are actually meeting the intended goals. Part V Writing(30 minutes,15 points) Directions:You are to write in no less than 120 words about the title “What I Consider Important in Life”.Your composition should be based on the Chinese outline given below.

( A ) When I first heard about geocaching (地理寻宝),I was skeptical. But the more I thought about it,the more it seemed like an interesting idea.I at least wanted to try it once. Having familiarized myself with how the game works,I set out in search of my first cache. My trip took me through a series of lively hutong (胡同),past a number of small temples, and right into the courtyard of a quiet youth hotel.I spent several minutes looking around, but couldn’t find anything.Just before I was about to give up,I spotted a colorful object in the crack of a wall.Could it be the hidden cache? At that moment a group of backpackers arrived.According to the game’s rules, people who are not in the game must not be allowed to find out about secret caches. So I pretended to make a phone call while waiting for them to leave. When the coast was clear,I grabbed the object. It was the cache! I opened it and pulled out a crumpled (皱的) sheet of paper with several names and celebratory messages written on it.I added my o wn and replaced the cache in its hiding place, ready for the next geocacher to find. It may seem like a simple game, but the idea that there are caches hidden all around us is exciting.Once you’re hooked,it’s easy to set yourself the goal of finding every single cache in a neighborhood or even an entire city. The real treasure, however,is not the cache itself, but the places it takes you to. Hunting for further caches has since introduced me to places which I didn’t even know existed. Some are peaceful parks, while others are forgotten historical sites.A few caches have even been in places I passed regularly without giving them any thought. Now,I feel a much closer connection. 21.What was the author’s initial attitude to geocaching?( ) A.He thought it interesting. B.He wanted to try it at once. C.He showed little interest in it. D.He found it unsuitable for him. 22.Where did the author find the cache?( ) A.In a hutong. B.In a temple. C.In a well.
