I realizedsomething this morning. I have been writing now for 34 years. It all startedwhen I was just 18 years old. As a boy I had read literally hundreds of books. I had a thirst for knowledge that seeminglycould never fade. Then suddenly I found I had something I wanted to share. Itried to ignore it, but as any writer will tell you once the ideas awakeninside of you they won’t leave you alone until you write them down. I didn’thave a computer, word processor, or even a typewriter. Still, I grabbed a penand lined notebook paper and wrote everything that was burning inside of me.

When I was done Ididn’t know how to share it. There was no internet back then, no smart phones, and no social media. I sought out the editor of my local county newspaper andasked him to print what I had written. He was a good man full of both wisdomand kindness. He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anythingelse I was willing to write. I continued to write new articles each week andshared them first with other local papers and later online as well. Years laterat the urging of my readers I even self-published two collections of my storiesin book form.

Through mywriting I slowly became more than I was. In my writings I encountered myhighest self. In my writings I discovered the goodness and light that lies inus all. In my writings I found great love and joy and encouraged others tochoose love and joy as well. I also found that we all are writers whether weput pen to paper or not. With every choice we make, with every thought we hold, and with everything we do we are writing our own life story.

Lance Wubbelsonce wrote: “I hope you realize your life is truly your life. It belongsto you. It is your story to write with love. Day by day, line by line, write itwell.”

Bowhead whales can live 200 years or longer. How they do it is no longer amongthe secrets of the deep. Scientists have mapped the genetic code of thislong-lived whale species. The international effort found unusual features inthe Arctic whale’s genes. Those features likely protect the species againstcancer and other problems related to old age.

“We hope tolearn what is the secret for living longer, healthier lives,” says Jo?oPedro de Magalh?es. He is a gerontologist atthe University of Liverpool in England. He also is co-author of the study thatappeared January 6 in Cell Reports. His team hopes, he says, that its newfindings might one day be

used “to improve human health and preserve humanlife.”

No other mammalis known to live as long as the bowhead. Scientists have shown that some ofthese whales have lived well beyond 100—including one that survived to 211. Forperspective, if he were still alive, Abraham Lincoln would be turning just 206this year. De Magalh?es’ team wanted to understand how the bowhead can live solong. To study this, the experts analyzed the animal’s complete set of geneticinstructions, called its genome . Those instructions arecoded in the animal’s DNA. The team also compared the whale’s genome to thoseof people, mice and cows.

The scientistsdiscovered differences, including mutations , in the whale’s genes. Those changes are linked to cancer, agi ngand cell growth. The results suggest that the whales are better than humans atrepairing their DNA. That’s important because damaged or flawed DNA can lead todiseases, including some cancers.

Bowheads also arebetter at keeping abnormally dividing cells in check. Together, the changesappear to allow bowhead whales to live longer without developing age-relateddiseases such as cancer, says de Magalh?es.

(1)What do we learn about bowhead whales?

A . Their average life is 100.

B . They are the longest-lived animals.

C . They don’t have aging problems.

D . They live in the Arctic Ocean.

(2)Why did scientists map the genetic code of bowhead whales?

A . To discover the secret of long life.

B . To find out a cure for cancer.

C . To prevent age-related diseases.

D . To lengthen human life.

(3)Why does the author mention Abraham Lincoln?

A . To remind us of the time he lived.

B . To show the long life of the bowhead.

C . To compare him with the bowhead.

D . To express people’s respect for him.

(4)What allows the bowhead to live a longer and healthier life?

A . Good DNA repair system.

B . Gene mutation.

C . Cell division.

D . Perfect living environment.

A No one knows who made the first ice cream. Some people think that water ices and milk ices may have been made by the Chinese between three thousand and a thousand years ago. In that time, the dish reached India. The Indians, in turn, many have passed on the secret to the Arabs and Persians. In 1535, when Catherine de Medeicis left Italy to marry the future King Herry II of France, she took her cooks with her. They made desserts the French had never tasted before, which was ice cream. At first ice cream was a luxury in France. Only rich people had the money to buy it. Then, in 1660, a young man from Sicily, Francisco Procopio, arrived in Paris. He opened a shop that sold ice cream at prices people could afford. Then his ice cream became so popular that other shops were opened.

But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama. 1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national health-care nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician! 2. Failure is critical to your success Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes. Love, Your mom 21. In the writer’s opinion, what does it take to realize one’s dream? A. Failure, hard work and good timing. B.
