A

How would you describe the colour of friendship? Friends are going to be drawn to one another for a variety of reasons. What makes friendships today especially wonderful is when they are based on interests and common activities rather than on skin colour.

There are many reasons that you might decide someone is a good friend. The colour of

friendship isn’t about race, ethnicity or skin colour. It’s about two people who care about each other just as they are. Great friendships are formed when people will be there for each other, no matter what happens. The true colour of friendship shouldn’t be a colour at all, but a feeling of belonging.

Each relationship that you have in your life is going to be different. Each one should be cherished because it is precious. Y ou should choose your friends based on what they are like on the inside, not what they look like on the outside. If you take time to explore the different layers of a person, you will find so many unique and interesting things about them that you otherwise would never know were there.

Y our friends can be any colour, and can be from any country. Although lots of people tend to spend time with people who look just like them, don't let yourself miss out on beautiful and lifelong friendships simply because you didn't want to or were afraid to get to know others who look differently.

One last thing to consider is that befriending someone who isn't exactly like you has some great positives, too. Y ou can learn about a new culture, try new foods, learn a different language, and so much more.

56. According to the passage, we can get great friendships from those who _______.

A. match us on the inside

B. match us on the outside

C. have the same skin colour as us

D. have different skin colour from us

57. The underlined phrase “a feeling of belonging” in Paragraph 2 refers to _______.

A. going through the same experiences

B. belonging to the same race or ethnicity

C. sharing common interests and activities

D. coming from the same culture or background

58. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Skin colour places no barrier between people’s friendships.

B. It’s not important to look at what a person is like on the outside.

C. Befriending someone who is exactly like you is of no benefit.

D. Most people enjoy being friends with people who look differently.

“I really enjoyed reading your essay. Y ou know how to use the story to document your point. Y ou are a very talented writer.” I offered my sincere evaluation o ne day after class.

On hearing my words, Jessica bowed her head, studied her shoes, readjusted her book bag, and stood awkwardly avoiding any eye contact. She spoke just above a whisper, “I suppose my writing is sometimes not bad.”

What was going on here? Had I broken some rule? Was I guilty of a cultural faux pas(失礼, 失言)?

As an educator with forty years’ experience, I found Jessica’s response to my evaluation to be one of the most difficult adjustments I had to make.

We had been told to expect this from a dults. “Mr Wu, your wife is very pretty.”

“Oh, no, she is common looking.”

“Mrs Wang, your son is a good student.”

“He needs to study even harder. He is sometimes lazy.” But I wasn’t ready for it in the classroom.

Praise has always been one of my teaching tools. I don't use it indiscriminately(不加选择地), and I don’t exaggerate(夸大), but I have always felt that students need to be told when they have accomplished something.

“Joe, I like your shirt.”

“Margaret, your writing gets better every week.”

“Sam, that’s a great answer. How did you get so much wisdom at such an early age?”

As a product of my culture, I can use such statements easily— without hesitation and with sincerity.

As a product of their culture, the students responded awkwardly. They just weren’t used to hearing such an appraisal of themselves. In fact, some students expressed dissatisfaction because I did not always write harsh(苛刻的), stern criticisms on their papers. They were expecting me to tell them the worst instead of the best.

Cultural faux pas or not, I am too old to change my methods, so I ignored dissatisfaction and continued with my honest evaluations. This reminds me! I need to send Jessica an e-mail today. She just sent me a copy of a short story she has written, and she wants my opinion. I must tell her truthfully. I like it!

59. Why did Jessica bow her head and study her shoes?

A. Because her shoes were dirty.

B. Because she felt nervous to face her teacher.

C. Because she felt sorry because she did a bad job.

D. Because it’s her modest manner.

60. What’s the meaning of “He needs to study even harder. He is sometimes lazy”?

A. “He” is bad student.

B. “He” does n't study hard.

C. The father isn’t satisfied with his son.

D. It’s just a humble response to the praise.

61. What will the author do according to the passage?

A. Praising Jessica again because of her nice short story.

B. Adjusting himself and stopping praising students.

C. Learning more about Chinese culture.

D. Leaving the place.

C

Have you ever picked a job based on the fact that you were good at it but later found it made you feel very uncomfortable over time? When you select your career, there's a whole lot more to it than assessing your skills and matching them with a particular position. If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job's pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are

a few of those main areas;

1) Do you prefer working alone or with other people?

There are isolating(使孤立)jobs that will drive an outgoing person crazy and also interactive jobs that will make a shy person uneasy. Most people are not extremes in either direction but do have a tendency that they prefer. There are also positions that are sometimes a

combination of the two, which may be best for someone in the middle who adapts easily to either situation.

2) How do you handle change?

Most jobs these days have some elements of change to them, but some are more than others. If you need stability in your life, you may need a job where the changes don't happen so often. Other people would be bored of the same daily routine.

3) Do you enjoy working with computers?

I do see this as a kind of personality characteristic. There are people who are happy to spend more than 40 hours a week on a computer, while there are others who need a lot of human interaction throughout the day. Again, these are extremes and you'll likely find a lot of positions somewhere in the middle as well.

4) What type of work environment do you enjoy?

This can range from being in a large building with a lot of people you won't know immediately to a smaller setting where you'll get to know almost all the people there fairly quickly.

5)How do you like to get paid?

Some people are motivated by the pay they get, while others feel too stressed to be like that. The variety of payment designs in the sales industry is a typical example for this.

Anyway, these are a great starting point for you. I've seen it over and over again with people that they make more money over time when they do something they love. It may take you a little longer, but making a move to do what you have a passion for can change the course of your life for the better.

62. What is unnecessary in your job hunting?

A. Assessing your skills.

B. Going to different areas.

C. Matching your skills with a position.

D. taking your personality into consideration.

63. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Isolating jobs usually drive people mad.

B. Interactive jobs make people shy easily.

C. Extreme people tend to work with others.

D. Almost everyone has a tendency in jobs.

64. What is the missing word about a job search in the following chart?

65. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Lifestyles and Job Pay

B. Jobs and Environment

C. Job Skills and Abilities

D. Personalities and Jobs

D

The day my fiancé fell to his death, it started to snow, just like the bottom hadn’t fallen out of my world when he fell off the roof. His body, when I found it, was lightly covered with snow. It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it pile up.

One morning, I shuffled(拖着脚步走) downstairs and was surprised to see a snowplow(扫雪机) clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman shoveling my walk. I dropped to my knees, crawled through the living room, and back upstairs so those good Samaritans would not see me. I was mortified. My first thought was, how would I ever repay them? I didn’t have the strength to brush my hair, let a lone shovel someone’s walk.

Before Jon’s death, I took pride in the fact that I rarely asked for help or favors. I defined myself by my competence and independence. How could I respect myself if all I did was sit on the couch everyday and watch the snow fall?

Learning how to receive the love and support that came my way wasn’t easy. Friends cooked for me and I cried because I co uldn’t even help them set the table. “I’m not usually this lazy,” I swept. Finally, my friend Kathy sat down with me and said, “Mary, cooking for you is not a burden. It makes me feel good to be ab le to do something for you.”

Over and over, I heard similar words of comfort from the people who supported me during those dark days. One very wise man told me, “Y ou are not doing nothing. Being fully open to your grief may be the hardest work you will ever do.”

In many ways I have changed for the better. I have been surprised to learn that there is incredible freedom that comes from facing one’s worst fear and walking away whole.

66. What made the author feel sad?

A. Her fiancé’s sudden death.

B. Constant heavy snow.

C. Her fiancé abandoning her.

D. Her job being refused again.

67. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “mortified” in Paragraph 1?

A. Surprised.

B. Angry.

C. Ashamed.

D. Moved.

68. It is _______ that helped the author out of darkness.

A. herself

B. her friends

C. her fiancé

D. a snowplow

69. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The author was a capable and independent woman.

B. The author was so lazy that she wouldn’t shovel the walk.

C. Finally the author got through hardest work bravely.

D. When facing the worst fear, you will get strength.

70. What’s the author’s purpose in the passage?

A. To talk about her hardest work in her life.

B. To talk about her real love between her and her fiancé.

C. To tell us to walk out of hardest work confidently and bravely.

D. To tell us the importance of friendship.

Teamwork is just as important in science as it is on the playing field or in the gym. Scientific investigations are almost always carried out by teams of people working together. Ideas are shared, experiments are designed, data are analyzed. And results are evaluated and shared with other investigators. Group work is necessary, and is usually more productive than working alone.

Several times throughout the year you may be asked to work with one or more of your classmates. Whatever the task your group is assigned, a few rules need to be followed to ensure a productive and successful experience.

What comes first is to keep an open mind, because everyone’s ideas deserve consideration and each group member can make his or her own contribution. Secondly, it makes a job easier to divide the group task among all group members. Choose a role on the team that is best suited to your particular strengths. Thirdly, always work together, take turns, and encourage each other by listening, clarifying, and trusting one another. Mutual support and trust often make a great difference.

Activities like investigations are most effective when done by small groups. Here are some more suggestions for effective team performance during these activities: Make sure each group member understands and agrees to the task given to him or her, and everyone knows exactly when, why and what to do; take turns doing various tasks during similar and repeated activities; be aware of where other group members are and what they are doing so as to ensure safety; be responsible for your own learning, though it is by no means unwise to compare your observations with those of other group members.

When there is research to be done, divide the topic into several areas, and this can explore the issue in a very detailed way. Y ou are encouraged to keep records of the sources used by each person, which helps you trace back to the origin of the problems that may happen unexpectedly.

A format for exchanging information (e.g., photocopies of notes, oral discussion, etc.) is also important, for a well-chosen method not only strengthens what you present but also makes yourself easily understood. When the time comes to make a decision and take a position on an issue, allow for the contributions of each member of the group. Most important of all, it is always wise to make decisions by compromise and agreement.

After you’ve completed a task with your team, make an evaluation of the team’s effectiveness---the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and challenges.

One possible version:

In recent years, a series of food safety incidents, such as melamine-tainted milk, lean meat powder, the dyed steamed buns, etc, have appeared across our country. As is vividly shown in the picture, the young wife is cooking. She is asking her husband whether he has finished checking the vegetables, and her husband answers that he needs one more step. This cartoon vividly illustrates how worried ordinary people are about food safety situation in China.

Several reasons contribute to this phenomenon. Firstly, people are too concerned about making quick money and short-term success during this period of economic and social transition. Secondly, ineffective supervision is also to blame. Some food inspectors make profits from the fines of illegal companies and therefore are unwilling to shut them down.

I firmly believe that urgent measures must be taken to prevent similar cases from happening again. First of all, the authorities concerned should step up the ir efforts to ensure food safety and severely punish those who break the Food Safety Law. Meanwhile, we must strengthen education of social morality to make sure that companies shoulder more social responsibilities and take consumers’ interests and health into account. Only in these ways can we set up a sound food safety system.
