III Reading comprehension

In this part ,there are three passages. For each passage there

are five questions. Please choose the best answer for each question.

Passage A

You are far from home on a lonely road. Shadowy forests stretched away on both sides. A thick mist (薄雾)makes it difficult to see far beyond your car’s windshield (挡风玻璃). Night is closing in. And you are low on gasoline.

This is a situation where an in-car computer that can navigate (导航) would be a big help.

A car computer that navigates? Yes. Such computers exist. Several experimental models are being tested by General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and several foreign car makers. These computers vary in detail. But they all contain series of maps on videodiscs or videotapes.

Before starting out on a trip, a driver can type in the code for the region he will travel through. The computer then shows a map of this region. Meanwhile, a tiny radio receiver linked to the computer works. It picks up signals from navigation satellites such as NA VSTAR network. The computer pinpoints the car’s position and also calculates and displays the best route to follow.

A navigation computer may also receive and use data about road constructions, weather conditions, and traffic jams. The information would be displayed to the driver and the computer would also use the information to work out routes. Navigation computers may not be seen on the market until around 1988, when the navigation computers will win the appreciation and admire of most drivers.Yet most new cars do contain computers. These are hidden computers that help cars run

more effiiciently.

51.Why does the author describe such a picture in the first paragragh?

A. To show driving at night is dangerous

B. To lay the foundation for introducing the big help of drivers—navigation

computers.

C. To warn the drivers of sufficient gasoline

D. To advise the drivers to buy a navigation computer.

52. What does “it” refer to in the fourth paragragh?

A. a tiny radio receiver

B. a navigation computer

C. the code.

D. a

map

53. What data can the navigation computer provide for the drivers?

A. the car’s right position and the best route

B. the weather and road situation

C. the traffic jams

D. all the above

54. Which statement is true according to the passage?

A. Without navigation satellites, the in-car computer could still locate the car’s

position at all times.

B. As soon as the driver starts his car, the navigation computer automatically

goes to work

C. The navigation computer tested by the manufacturers all contain maps stored

in videodiscs of videotapes.

D. People may buy navigation computers on the market before 1988.

55. What is the best title of the passage?

A. driving at night.

B. how to use the navigation computer

C. computers in cars

D. the function of the computers in cars

Passage B

What is exactly a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say:"I wish I could help you but I am short of money myself." In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a " white lie" such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. 76) Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.

77) Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their charis more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying" I wish I were somewhere else now."

56.This passage tells us that____.

A. telling lies is often necessary in order to avoid being defeated

B. telling lies is often bad because people ought not to be dishonest

C. telling llies is sometimes necessary in order not to hurt someone else's feeling.

D. telling lies is not bad at all in most cases.

57.In Pargagraph 2, the sentence"Women are better liars than men do" probably means_____.

A. women are better at telling lies than men

B. women liars are better accepted than men

C. women have a better intention when telling lies

D. women tell fewer lies than men do

58. A "white lie" means_____.

A. a lie that is completely unbelievable

B. a lie that is told with a good will

C. a lie that is always believable

D. a lie that often has an evil purpose

59. Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling the kind of lies____.

A. from which they may gain some advantages

B. that seems to be believable

C. that women are most likely to believe

D. with which they can have better relationship with others

60. It can be concluded from the passage that_____.

A. there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying.

B. from some ways people behave we can know they are lying.

C. certain emotions are proof of lying

D. in some situations women are most likely to think businessmen are dishonest.

Passage C

Generally speaking , people want to keep a wild animal as a pet for oneofmany reasons: they want to impress other people by owning an unusual, uncommon animal as a pet. 78) In no case is the happiness of the animal at the heart of the matter.

If you do want to own a wild animal , for instance a fox (usually a little larger than your average house cat) , you have to take this test first: go to your nearest Humane Society Shelter (动物保护协会)and bring home a grown cat and a very

active dog. Raise them and be with them; consider them your best friends. Do not leave them alone for more than 9 hours in any given day; do not hit them or shout at them; and do not abuse them in any way. If, after two years, both animals are alive and are still with you without your caging them or locking them in a part of your home most of the day, then maybe you have what it takes to own a wild animal.

The problem here is in the definition of the word pet. A pet is something you keep in your house or around your yard as a companion—a companion who is usually prevented from escaping one way or another. 79) In no case is the happiness of the animal at the heart of the matter.

. Please don’t make the life of some wild animals a living hell by trying to raise one as a pet.

61. Which reason is true for people keeping a wild animal as a pet in the passage?

A. They want to show off to other people.

B.Wild animals are orderly.

C.They just want to keep a wild animal for business purpose.

D.They love wild animals heartily.

62. To pass the test, you must make it certain that________.

A.you take the trying animals with you most of the time

B.you are kind to the tying animals

C.the tying animals are still in good condition in two years

D.all of the above

63.It can be inferred that of all the animals mentioned in the passage a _____- is the most difficult one

to keep as a pet.

A.wild pig

B. fox

C. tiger

D. dog

64.According to the author, you can raise a wild animal if you _____.

A.think the best ridiculous

B. can’t bear dogs and cats

C.may work more than 9 hours

D. may raise the tying animals well for 2 years

65.What does the word “hell” in the last sentence mean?

Passage D

It is no secret having health problems can make it harder for you to buy life insurance. High blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease are among the conditions that can make it difficult to buy life insurance.

If you are overweight, but otherwise healthy, you still might have a hard time buying life insurance. Even if you are not obese, there are some cases in which you will have to pay more for life insurance if your weight reaches a certain level. In most instances, the heavier you are, the more you will pay.

Along with age, medical history, and lifestyle, life insurance companies take your build into consideration on your application. Build is your weight relative to your height. The more you weigh in relation to your height, the more potential you have for health problems. The ideal life insurance customer is someone who is expected live a long, healthy life. Statistics show overweight people pose increasedinsurance risks, because they are likely to develop health problems. Excess weight is linked to 280,000 deaths in the U.S. annually.

Where can you go if you are rejected because of your weight? There are companies and agents specializing in insuring people with health problems. One way is by offering the graded death benefit policy that pays out varying amount depending on how long you live. The longer you live, the more money your beneficiaries receive.

Like most ailments it has its own cause, symptoms, and cure. Culture shock is precipitated by the anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. These signs or cues include the thousand and one ways in which we orient ourselves to the situations of daily life: when to shake hands and what to say when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to give orders to servants, how to make purchases, when to accept and when to refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These cues which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, customs, or norms are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend for our peace of mind and our efficiency on hundreds of these cues. Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar cues are removed.
