每当大的灾难降临时,文学都会被大众记起,它所扮演的角色也分外值得人细品。

一类是视文学为预言,从过往的小说中寻找佐证。如此次新冠肺炎疫情,美国作家迪恩·孔茨写于1981年的科幻小说《黑暗之眼》中就虚构了一种会在2020年蔓延的名为“武汉400”的病毒。一类则是视文学为镜子,从历史作品中窥见当下,洞察人性,反映现实。如加缪描写1940年法属阿尔及利亚的《鼠疫》。

而科幻文学作为涵盖两者的特殊文学种类,便被放到聚光灯下进行检视。如某小说中科学狂人培养低毒性病毒,任其在人类中传播,以这种极端方法持续化解危险的临界状态。这也是在科幻小说中才能出现的思想实验,借此探讨一系列非常态下的科技与伦理问题。

科幻作家或者科幻小说并不必然地承担“预测未来”这一功能,而更多地是通过想象性的叙事,提出种种未来的可能性,而其中许多故事的未来都是带有高度风险与挑战的。正是借由讲故事,我们传播关于科技、人文与美学的观念,引起问题意识,展开思辨讨论,以这种实验来“摊薄”未来的风险。

对于这次疫情,孩子们最需要借助阅读科幻小说来获得的理解是,人类需要敬畏自然,尊重其他物种与环境,才能让文明可持续发展下去。我们常说人类是万物灵长,但当人类活动过度破坏其他物种的生存环境,乃至于整个星球的生态平衡时,这个庞大的系统必然会通过种种方式来寻求再平衡,而人类只不过是其中的一分子,与其他物种都应该是平等的。

今天发生的一切并非偶然,在可见的未来,倘若人类无法改变自己的生活生产方式,灾难将会以更极端更频繁的形式再度降临。而对孩子来说,如果能通过阅读科幻小说的方式,在心智中建立起“可持续发展”和“人类命运共同体”的观念,我们的未来才不会重蹈覆辙。

所以,尽管人类建造起高楼大厦,制造出飞机汽车,能够控制局部环境,对于自然来说,仍旧只是微不足道、能力有限的一种生物而已。

在这种认识下,对灾难的想象就成了人类生存试验的提前功课。小行星撞击地球,全球火山爆发,气候变化……各种各样的灾难都会考验人类的生存能力。这种灾难,也许永远不会来,也许很快就会发生。因为我们对世界的认识有太大的局限,小行星从地球附近经过,未必能够得到及时的预警,地球内部突然发生剧烈的变化,那更是无法预期的事,因为除了偶然性的局部地震之外,全球性地质变动远在人类的经验之外。

灾难能够带来警示,带来反思。它让我们学会在自然面前保持谦卑。从这个意义上来说,了解那些虚构的灾难,可以帮助孩子塑造世界观,意识到虽然我们生活在一个温和的环境之中,但稍稍放开眼界,就会发现我们的生存环境其实很脆弱,从而减少因为人类的技术优势而滋长的自大。这也是一种科学普及的良好途径。许多描述灾害的小说或者电影,多少都带有科学的元素,不敢说这就能够让人立志走上科学道路,但至少可以埋下许多种子,这和科幻小说的普遍意义是一致的。孩子们在成长,对灾难的思考无疑有助于帮助他们正确地理解这个世界。
