As I wake up every day, I find it so hard to get out of bed as I think to myself. I would give anything just to sleep in a little longer. I know for a fact that I am not the only teenager that feels this way. It’s not just the luxury of sleeping that effects teenagers, according to the Washington Post American. Teenagers are getting far less sleep than they need, and their health, behavior and academic performance are suffering as a result.

Based in part on Dr. Mary Carskadons research, some U.S. School have changed their school’s start time. Most these schools are moving there starting times back to times around 9:00 a.m. because it makes it easier for the students to learn and pay attention in class. Guajome Park Academy high school starts at 7:45 a.m. in the morning. From 7:45 to about 9:00 is when I have math and/or German depending on the day. In the time span of these classes some people will experience tiredness, irritability, edginess, and problems with memory, says Dr. Lindsley. Parent news says that 20% of all high school students fall asleep in school during this time.

If you’re a student at Guajome Park Academy then you need to go to bed at 9:00 p.m. and wake up at 6:00 a.m. to get a good nine hours of sleep every day. Now how many people do you know that go to bed at 9:00 every day? Even if they go to bed at 9:00, they are not likely to fall asleep till after 11:00 so that leaves them with even less sleep. Passage Three

Questions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.

In the 1970s the prices of most things in Americans buy more than doubled. Such a general increase in prices is called inflation. Of course prices of selected goods may increase for reasons unrelated to inflation: the price of fresh lettuce may rise because unseasonably heavy rainfall in California has ruined the lettuce crop, or the price of gasoline may rise if the oil-producing countries set a higher price for oil. During inflation, however, all prices tend to rise.

Over the last 400 years there have been many periods of inflation. In the 16th century, when the Spaniards began bringing back gold and sliver from the New World, prices in Western Europe moved upward as the supply of money increased. During the 19th century prices tend to go downward as food and raw materials became cheaper. After major wars such as the Napoleonic Wars and World Wars I and II, prices again moved upward. In the 1950s and 1960s a so-called creeping inflation occurred, when the general price level in the United States and Western Europe rose by an average of 1 to 5 percent each year. IN the 1970s inflation increased until it reached as much as 13 percent a year in the United States.

Many countries have suffered from inflation more than has the United States. Israel had inflation of more than 100 percent a year in the early 1980s, meaning that the cost of living more than doubled every year. In Argentina inflation was greater than 400 percent in 1975 and averaged more than 100 percent each year from 1976 to 1982. The most remarkable inflation in modern times was the German hyperinflation of 1923, when people went to the store with wheelbarrows full of money to buy a few groceries. A similar hyperinflation occurred in Hungary after World War II.

43. Which of the following can cause inflation?

A. The price of fresh lettuce rises because of unseasonably heavy rainfall

B. the price of gasoline rises when the oil-producing countries set a higher price

for oil

C. The supply of money increased when the Spaniards brought back gold and

silver from the New World.

44. The so-called creeping inflation happened ______

C. during the 19th century

D. in the early 1980s

45. The most remarkable inflation in modern times happened in______

A. Hungary

B. Argentina

C. Germany

D. the United States

46. In which year did the inflation cause the price the highest increase?

A. 1975

B. 1976

C. 1982

D. 1923

47. Not mentioned but implied:

A. People can buy cheaper food and raw materials during inflation

B. The price increased quickly in the 1950s and 1960s

D. The trade condition was very bad in Hungary after World War II

Passage Four

Questions 48 to 52 are based on the following passage.

Celine is a proud Canadian. That is why she has sung our national anthem at countless events, that is why she financially supports numerous Canadian organizations, and that is also why she continues to make French and English albums. She is a healthy role model for young and old people all over the world, and it is an honor to say she is Conidian.

Celine Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec, on March 30,1968 and was the youngest of 14 children in a large musical family. Celine Dion was named after a song her mother was singing while pregnant. She was discovered singing in the family owned restaurant, at age 12, but had been singing there ever since age five, along with other children in her family. It was a small restaurant and club where the children could often show their musical talents where her father would play the accordion and mother the violin. At only five years old, she had already began to develop as a singer and entertainer, so it makes sense she had the talent and capability to produce her very first recording at only age twelve with her mother and her brothers. Celine was discovered by Montreal Impresario, Rene Angelil, who later became her husband, in 1981. Celine’s mother had found Rene’s address in an album of Ginette Reno, a popular French singer. Rene had heard the demo-tape containing the songs Celine had written, and he was immediately taken to make her an internationally known talent. When he first heard her sing live, he cried because it was so beautiful. Rene had so much faith in Celine, that he even mortgaged his house to finance the production of Celine’s first album. Her only obstacle for success beyond Canada and France was her French lyrics.

新理念大学英语三级阅读教程

本文节选自Iron John: A Book About Men Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. Copyright 1994, 2004 by Robert Bly We talk a great deal about "the American man," as if there were some constant quality that remained stable over decades, or even within a single decade. The men who live today have veered far away from the Saturnian, old-man-minded farmer, proud of his introversion, who arrived in New England in 1630, willing to sit through three services in an unheated church. In the South, an expansive, motherbound cavalier developed, and neither of these two "American men" resembled the greedy railroad entrepreneur that later developed in the Northeast, nor the reckless I-will-do-without culture settlers of the West. 【这一段里作者提到哪几种美国人?他提这些的目的是什么?】 Even in our own era the agreed-on model has changed dramatically. During the fifties, for example, an American character appeared with some consistency that became a model of manhood adopted by many men: the Fifties male. He got to work early, labored responsibly, supported his wife and children, and admired discipline. Reagan is a sort of mummified version of this dogged type. This sort of man didn't see women's souls well, but he appreciated their bodies; and his view of culture and America's part in it was boyish and optimistic. Many of his qualities were strong and positive, but underneath the charm and bluff there was, and there remains, much isolation, deprivation, and passivity. Unless he has an enemy, he isn't sure that he is alive. The Fifties man was supposed to like football, be aggressive, stick up for the United States, never cry, and always provide. But receptive space or intimate space was missing in this image of a man. The personality lacked some sense of flow. The psyche lacked compassion in a way that encouraged the unbalanced pursuit of the Vietnam war, just as, later, the lack of what we might call "garden" space inside Reagan's head led to his callousness and brutality toward the powerless in El Salvador【查工具书:是怎么回事?】, toward old people here, the unemployed, schoolchildren, and poor people in general. 【Fifties Male有什么特点?】 The Fifties male had a clear vision of what a man was, and what male

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三)

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it. 大学英语三级阅读模拟试题集 Model Test 1 Passage One Suppose you set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had 3 more days to see. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed (降临) before you. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often. Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just 3 days! 1.What can be inferred from the 2nd paragraph? A. the author is a deaf B. the author is a blind person C.
