The table shows the changes of students’ choices of various kinds of books from1985 to 2005. Obviously enough, the number of novels and books of philosophy and society has declined gradually, with that of foreign languages books and computer science ones enjoying much more popularity.

How People Spend Their Holidays

As is clearly shown in the table that there was a dramatic change in the way people spent their holidays between 1990 and 2000. Especially, in 1990, 63% of people spent their holidays at home, while the figure decreased considerably to 24% in 2000. there are three reasons for this phenomenon.

To begin with, with the development of market-oriented economy, people earn by far more money than they used to, making it possible for them to afford traveling expenses. In addition, people realize the importance of getting well-informed about the outside world in this modern era to develop their potential. For example, a traveller may encounter or talk with someone of a different cultural background so as to broaden his vision. Last but not least, by traveling outside, people are close to nature, which is not only beneficial to both their health and peace of mind. In short, more and more people take the occasion of holiday to travel outside and relax themselves.

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to go traveling instead of staying at home during holidays. On the one hand, I love meeting different people and take in some fresh ideas. Cha nges in People’s Daily Expenses

What is shown in the table above indicates that dramatic changes have taken place in the people’s daily expenses from 1995 to 1999. The expenses on food have declined by 30% while those on clothing and recreation have increased respectively by 9% and 7% . The statistics of rise and fall seem to exist in isolation but closely related to one another .

There are two factors accounting for these changes. Development in economy is an essential one in the five years. The increased income resulting from economic growth plays an important part in the less expense on food. Hence, a small percentage of total income is enough to cover food expense. Another one is the changes in life style. When food presents no worry to the average, people begin to focus more of interest on handsome appearance and happy leisure time . As a result of such a shift, spending on clothing and recreation increases year after year.

From the analyses made above, we may come to the conclusion that

people’s living standards have been constantly improved between 1995 and 1999. With the further growth in economy and more changes in life style, the tendency indicated in the table will continue in the better direction.

Student Use of Computer

Since 1990, there has been tremendous growth in the use of computers by students. While in 1990, the average number of hours a student spent on the computer was about one hour per week, this number grew to nearly four hours per week by 1995, and to approximately 20 hours per week by the year 2000.

This significant growth in the use of computers by students in the 1990’s can be attributed to several factors, including widespread usage, lower prices, and technological and social developments. Nowadays, computers are widely used by students for word processing, book keeping, multimedia presentations, and access to the Internet for both research and communications. Additionally, since 1990, due to competition and technological advances, computer hardware and software prices, as well as Internet usage charges have dropped significantly. Finally, technological developments and changes in social habits in the 1990’s have played a major role in this tremendous growth in the use of computers. Today’s society relies heavily on computers for immediate access to the news and for entertainment, including, listening to music, watching movies and sport events, and playing computer games.

While computers are of great assistance to the students, and therefore,

are indispensable tools, they also pose some challenges. The biggest challenge that many students face is discipline in the use of this powerful device. That is, students need to have the discipline of not allowing themselves to be

lured by the entertaining aspects of this wonderful tool—aspects that can

Incomes and Savings

From the charts we can easily find that incomes in China are increasing, and savings deposits are also increasing. In 1965, the average annual income in China increased at a rate of 6%, and the savings increased 6.5%. in 2005 the numbers soared to 29.5% and 31% respectively.

The possible reasons, I think, may be as follows. First, with the development of the economy, the wealth of our whole nation’s increasing. So this promotes the increase in income and savings. Secondly, people have changed their consumption habits greatly in recent years. For example, many parents now spend a lot on their children’s education, and they have to save money for their children’s higher education. Last but not least, with the increase of income, people have more money to save, which can later be spent on insurance, house payments and other large expenses.

In my opinion, the increase of income and savings is just like a double-edged sword which can benefit the whole nation’s revenue while hindering the economy’s development. The more money is saved in the bank, the less money people spend. Especially, in 1999, 38% of the Chinese working in the agriculturak industry, decreased nearly half to that of 1980 while the number of people engaged in service industry quadrupled that of 1980. Why are there such great changes during 20 years?

In my opinion, three possible reasons contribute to it. First of all, with the development of primitive economy, more people will move over into manufacturing and the service industries. Secondly, China’s open-door and economic reform policies realize more efficient and effective farming and increased urbanization. For example, with the development of what is called the village and township enterprises, a great number of farmers are now working in various small business without living their homes, which accounts mainly for the increase in manufacturing population. Finally, the economic policies result in an immense improvement in the Chinese people’s living standard, which creates a great huge demand for service and thus enable the service industries to flourish and absorbs more and more people into these fields.

As far as the effect is concerned, the changes of the percentages of Chinese professions will have far-reaching significance.
