1.Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

正确答案: A problem of modern societies is the decling level of health in the general population. One possible solution is to provide more sports facilities to encourage a more active lifestyle. However, there are some people who doubt whether the solution would have effects. Advocates of this solution believe that increasing the number of sports facilities is the best way to improve the well-being of people. First of all, nowadays people have to devote more time and energy to their careers and therefore they are too busy to spare time for physical exercises. If there were easy-to-reach local sports facilities, they would be more likely to take part in physical activities regularly. Another reason is that today’s sedentary lifestyle means that physical activity is no longer part of people’s leisure time. If more sports facilities were offered, doing a variety of sports would be much more attractive than just sitting in front of a screen every evening. However, there are some reasons why the solution would have little effect. In the first place, interest in sport is not universal, and additional facilities might simply attract those who are already fit, not those who most need them. What we should do is to help children develop a positive attitude to exercise at an early age. in the second place, there may be better ways of tackling this problem. For example, high tax penalties could be imposed on high-fat food products, tobacco and alcohol, as excessive consumption of any of these contributes to poor health. Even improving public transport would help because it takes longer to walk to the bus stop than to the car. In my opinion, increasing the number of sports facilities would not have the desired results. People should be encouraged to form the habit of regular physical exercises when they are young, in addition, some better approaches may assist to improve people’s health.

2.The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

正确答案:The graph shows energy consumption in the US from 1980 to 2013, and projected consumption to 2030. There was a fluctuation in the number of petrol and oil from 1980 to 1995. After that the number will rise gradually until

2030, peaking at 47q. The 50 years witnessed a slight increase in the number of coal. After a fluctuation from 1980 to 2015, the number of natural gas will remain stable at 25q until 2030. There will be a slow growth in the number of nuclear over the 50 years. Similarly, the number of solar/wind will grow moderately during this time period. However, the 50 years will see little change in the number of hydro power. Petrol and oil had and will have the highest number in the six energy sources throughout this period. Either natural gas or coal occupied the second place. The number of nuclear was slightly higher than that of solar/wind and hydro power had the lowest number. Overall, the US will continue to rely on fossil fuels, with sustainable and nuclear energy sources remaining relatively insignificant.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. 正确答案:The line graph indicates the changes of energy demand and the energy available from fossil fuels in Freedonia for 20 years to 2005. According to the line graph, the amount of energy available from fossil fuels increased significantly from approximately 3.5 units (each unit is equivalent to 100 billion megajoules) in 1985 to 6.5 in 1995, which was its peak. But after that it dropped sharply until 2000 when it remained stable at about 2.5 units until 2005. On the contrary, between 1985 and 1990, the demand for energy decreased gradually from 5 units to nearly 2 units. There was little change in this number from 1990 to 1995. Since 1995, it jumped suddenly. In 2000, this number increased to less than 4 units but after then it will go up more rapidiy and reached 7 units in 2005. It can be seen from the line graph that energy available was higher than energy demand from 1986 to 1999. However, after 1999, energy available was unable to keep up with energy demand. 2.The table below shows the figures for imprisonment in five countries between 1930 and 1980. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. 正确答案:The bar chart compares the numbers of prisoners in five countries from 1930 to 1980. The number of prisoners in Great Britain increased from 30,000 in 1930 to 80,000 in 1980. The number of prisoners in Australia fell rapidly from 1930 to 1940, increased gradually to 1970 and then decreased sharply to 1980. The number of prisoners in New Zealand dropped sharply from 1930 to 1940, but then increased gradually to 1980. The number of prisoners in the United States rose sharply from 1930 to 1940, and then decreased to 1950. The number decreased from 1960 to 1970, and then increased to 1980. The number of prisoners in Canada decreased slightly from 1930 to 1940, and then increased slightly to 1950. The number decreased from 1960 to 1970, and then increased to 1980. From 1930 to 1970, Great Britain had the lowest figure among the five countries. In 1980, Australia had the lowest number. The country which had the highest number was either the United States or Canada. Canada had the highest number in 1930 and 1950. The United Sates had the highest number in other years.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. 正确答案:The column graph compares the proportions of men and women in executive positions in the ACME Oil Company for 12 months from July 1993 to June 1994. Approximately 76% of workers in the lowest executive positions of Officer Grade E are women. This is the highest percentage of women in any executive job category in the ACME Oil Company. In contrast, the lowest proportion of men is found in this category. As the executive position increases to a higher officer grade, the percentage of women decreases and the percentage of men increases. This trend continues throughout the graph. The least difference between the percentage of men and women found in a job category exists in the Officer Grade C, which is a middle executive position. Here women represent 40% and men represent 60% of workers in this category. In the highest executive position of Officer Grade A, women represent only about 5% of workers. This stands in marked contrast to the 95% of men represented in this job category. In conclusion, men occupy a greater percentage of high executive positions in the ACME Oil Company. In fact, the higher the executive position, the higher the percentage of men represented in the category. In comparison, women’s representation is inversely proportional to men’s, so that the higher the executive job category, the

It is also apparent that the proportion of students without the ability to speak a foreign language had fallen dramatically by the decade.Spanish speaking British students made up 30% of the total number of British students at the university in 2000, and by 2010, this figure had risen slightly to 35%. Similarly, those who had learnt another language other than English or the ones listed, had grown noticeably from 15% to 20%, as likewise had those who spoke two foreign languages (10% to 15%). The percentage of the British students able to speak German remained constant at 10%.Meanwhile, for those who spoke no foreign language, the figure had dropped sharply from a fifth in 2000 to a tenth in 2010. Following a similar, albeit less dramatic, falling trend were those whose only other language than English was French —from 15% to 10%. WRITING TASK 2You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. 2.You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. 正确答案:The bar charts provide data of the UK graduates and postgraduates who did different types of work, further study or were unemployed after graduation in 2008. For UK graduates, the majority of the population chose further study as their destination, reaching 29,665, which is considerably higher than the sum of the population (21,235) who chose to work: part-time work (17,735) and voluntary work (3,500). The number of graduates who could not get a job was nearly the same as that of part-time work with 16,235. Similar to the distribution of the numbers of graduates, the number of postgraduates going to do voluntary work was also the smallest with only 345 and that of unemployment was 1,625. Compared with graduates, the gap between the numbers of people who did part-time work and continued to study was much narrower with 2,535 and 2,725 respectively, which resulted in that the number of postgraduates who got a job (2,880) was slightly over that of further study. In general, the largest number of both graduates and postgraduates chose further study as their destination, while the number of voluntary workers was the least. However, more postgraduate students did part-time work than graduate students. 涉及知识点:小作文(看图作文) 2.The chart below shows the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in the UK, divided into three categories, from 1995-2002. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. 正确答案:The chart shows the time spent by UK residents on different types of telephone calls between 1995 and 2002. Local fixed line calls were the highest throughout the period, rising from 72 billion minutes in 1995 to just under 90 billion in 1998. After peaking at 90 billion the following year, these calls had fallen back to the 1995 figure by 2002. National and international fixed line calls grew steadily from 38 billion to 61 billion at the end of the period in question, though the growth slowed over the last two years. There was a dramatic increase in mobile calls from 2 billion to 46 billion minutes. This rise was particularly noticeable between 1999 and 2002, during which time the use of mobile phones tripled. To sum up, although local fixed line calls were still the most popular in 2002, the gap

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. (2016-02-20) Note: ESC=born in English speaking country NESC=born in Non English speaking country 正确答案:There are 2 figures shown. The first, a pie chart, shows the breakdown, in 2003, of employed people in Australia and whether they are native, from an English-speaking country (ESC) or from a non-English speaking country (NESC). The 2nd, a line chart, shows the rate of unemployment in these 3 groups between 1993 and 2003. From the pie chart we can see that the vast majority, 76%, of the workforce in Australia was, in fact, local. The remaining 24% was either people from an ESC or a NESC, with NESC people having the larger percentage of 14%. Looking at the line chart, the first thing that is noticeable is that the number of unemployed NESC people in 1993 was double that of the other 2 groups. However, over the 10 years it steadily decreased from 8 million to a little over 4 million. The lines pertaining to both the local and ESC people declined a little bit over the same period, with the native figures fluctuating along the way. Overall, we can see that the level of employment rose in Australia and that the workforce was primarily made up of Australians. 涉及知识点:小作文(看图作文) 2.The graph below shows the unemployment levels in Ireland and the number of people leaving the country between 1988 and 2008. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. (2016-02-27) 正确答案:The graph shows Irish unemployment levels as a percentage as well as the number of people emigrating over a twenty-year period starting in 1988. Looking at the unemployment rate first, we can clearly see it was highly volatile. Beginning in 1988 at about 17% it fell considerably to around 7% in the first 2 years. It fluctuated massively over the next 10 years finishing, in 2000, at around 6%, and then steadily increased over the next 8 years to arrive at a final figure in 2008 of approximately 11%. The line showing people leaving began at approximately 35,000. This increased reaching a peak in 1990 of around 50,000. It then fell relatively steadily until a little before 2000 where it reached its lowest point of roughly 30,000, only to then generally increase again finishing at a little less than 40,000. In summary, we can see that although the unemployment rate finished

Do you think that being a celebrity brings more benefits or more problems? 正确答案:Every year a few new stars rise in entertainment industry as well as in other areas and a far big number of people are always dreaming to be famous. There is a perception that the merits of being a celebrity come along with downsides. However, I believe that there are more benefits than problems brought about by being well-known. First and foremost, being famous basically means being wealthier. In my country, not only do quite a few sports personalities make a fortune in their own area, but also they are paid millions of dollars to promote some brands. Actually manufacturers find the sales of the products are boosted when advertised by popular sportsmen or sportswomen as these talents have huge numbers of fans and followers. Second, celebrities can enjoy some privileges that ordinary people can hardly imagine to experience. This is particularly true when a big event, like the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, is held and the entrance tickets are excessively demanded, the more famous a person is, the more likely he or she can get the entry, because celebrities are the preferred guests wherever they show up. Admittedly, too much exposure to public means that celebrities can barely lead lives of an ordinary person and their behavior may be soon known worldwide. However, these problems can be countered by taking precautious measures to minimize the negative effects, such as hiring body guards and using wits to talk. All in all, I think this difference between a celebrity and a normal person brings more pros than cons to most famous people. Therefore, why not fight everything possible for the difference? 2.On a recent holiday you lost a valuable item. Fortunately you have travel insurance to cover the cost of anything lost.
