M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you？

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.

M: Yes, certainly. Well, we’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club — we have about 50 members at the moment but we’re growing all the time.

W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize？

M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.

W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings？

M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practise their languages —you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday —Spanish; Tuesday —Italian; Wednesday —German; and Friday —French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.

W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practise my French.

M: In our studio today, I’m with a college student Sarah Mercer, who wants to be

a weather forecaster. Sarah, when did you become interested in the weather? W: Well, I could read a weather map when I was ten! I remember we had really cold winters in my home town that made traveling difficult, so I’d switch on the TV forecast to see when we’d have good weather. My science teacher was surprised how much I knew during our lessons on the weather at school!

M: And did your family encourage you?

W: My grandfather recorded the weather every day. My father explained to me the weather charts patiently and took me to the weather station in town. My mum bought me a special computer so that I could record the weather just like my grandfather had done.

M: And you started a weather club at your school. What happened there?

W: Well, the school already had a mini weather station before, so we used what we found out from that to put in a daily weather diary —that’s now kept in the school library. And I found the information very useful for school projects I worked on!

M: Internet safety is a big concern nowadays and to protect young children and teenagers online, it’s a good idea to monitor the sites they visit. Don’t

prevent kids and teenagers from using the Internet. It’s important for their education and can help them make friends too!

Now, let me tell you a bit about some sites we’ve found. Of course, there are

a limited number of sites for the very young, but we would suggest one called

Playtime Online. It’s designed for children from four to six years old. It’s really colorful and helps children learn skills for games. Children love it and it helps them when they begin school. Then, from say five until about ten years of age, there’s a really useful website called Moving UP. This takes Playtime Online a step further and increases the math and language skills of the child.

Teachers speak highly of this site for child development.

When children get into their teens, the Internet can be a more dangerous place.

Net Aware, for the twelve to sixteen year age group, makes young people more aware of online danger s. It’s a good site for children to look at before they start using the Internet on their own.

The last site is invaluable for teens studying for exams. Sixteen to eighteen-year-olds love Test Doctors, which is a site designed to help students study for their exams and is full of handy tips for improving study skills. The site is run by subject specialists so it’s packed full of information.
