目前在世界上，野生大熊猫的数量不足1000只，即使是在动物园里培育的大熊猫，数量也相当少，并且饲养、繁育大熊猫的成活率很低。因此大熊猫是我国的一级保护动物，弥足珍贵。至于为何大熊猫濒临灭绝，原因有以下几点。首先，成年大熊猫在一年之中的发情期短，一年中不过春、秋两次。雄性的大熊猫，它们的发情期大约持续三、四十天，而雌性的大熊猫则只有8到20天左右的时间，并且其中最利于交配的时间仅仅有两到三天。所以一旦错过了这一有利的交配期，那么雌性大熊猫便失去了此次受孕的机会。再加上大熊猫平常除了发情期外，往往不相往来，独自为生，只有到了发情期，才开始漫山遍野地到处寻找异性伴侣，所以结果可想而知，大熊猫的出生率将有多低。而且雌性大熊猫每胎只产一只幼仔，很少有双胞胎，即使大熊猫一次产下了两只幼仔，熊猫妈妈也只会抚养其中的一只，不管另一只。再加上刚刚出生的大熊猫幼仔非常的脆弱，浑身没有毛来包裹着，体型大小比老鼠还要小，两个月后才能看见东西，三个多月后才可以爬行，因此大熊猫幼仔非常容易因为各种原因而夭折，例如缺乏足够的营养、患病、遭遇恶劣的气候，或者遇到了大熊猫的天敌——金猫、豺、豹、狼，以及黄喉貂等等。其次，是大熊猫单一的饮食习惯。众所周知，大熊猫喜欢吃竹子，这也是大熊猫又被人称为“竹熊”的原因。但就是这一点，使大熊猫的生存受到了威胁。大熊猫吃的竹子包括了它们能够在山中找到的所有的种类，而且除了睡眠和短暂的爬行运动之外，大熊猫一天当中有十多个小时是在吃竹子。一只大熊猫每天进食12~38公斤食物，接近其体重的40%，它们喜欢吃竹子最有营养、纤维含量最少的部分，比如竹子的嫩茎、嫩芽，还有鲜嫩的竹笋。所以当大熊猫的栖息
