Directions: There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions.. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Questions 31 to 34 are based on the following passage.

It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry or decimum. Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The decimum was the wife's right to receive a tenth of all her husband's property. The wife had the right to withhold consent, in all transactions the husband would make. And more than just a right; the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.

The wife shared in the management of her husband's personal property, but the inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Maria Vivas, a Catalan woman of Barcelona. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro's personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract said, “For the sake of peace.” Either through the dowry or through being hot-tempered, the Catalan wife knew how to win herself, within the context of the family; a powerful economic position.

Passage Two

Questions 35 to 38 are based on the following passage.

The word health can be used in a number of ways. In the past, health only meant the absence of illness. Today, though, health has a broader meaning. Health is the state of your well-being that includes how you feel physically, mentally, and socially. Wellness is another term that describes this broader view of health. You can understand the need for a broader definition if you think about how health in your life is different from health in your grandparents' lives.

In 1900, the main causes of death were diseases that were spread by bacteria and viruses. The danger of death from pneumonia would have been three times greater than the danger of death from cancer at that time.

The diseases that were most common in 1900 affected people of all ages. It is not surprising that around 1900 the emphasis of health was on freedom from illness. Today many of the diseases that were common in 1900 can be prevented or cured by improved medicines and methods of sanitation. Most diseases now are likely to occur later in life. A teenager will probably not have to think about the same threats to his health as his grandparents did.

These improvements in health conditions mean that not only can you now enjoy a better life, but you also have a greater chance of having a longer life. Controlling diseases has increased the life expectancy in the United States. Generally, people born more recently have higher life expectancies. Since 1900, the life expectancy in the United States has increased by more than 27 years. It has increased from 47 years for those born in 1900 to 74 years in 1981.

35.According to Paragraph 1, health and wellness ____.

[C] had the same meaning in the past

[D] both refer to the state of your well-being

36.Which of the following statements is true?

[A] Diseases caused by bacteria and viruses are incurable today.

[B] Bacteria and viruses are the main causes of death today.

[C] Medicines for curing pneumonia were not available in 1900.

[D] Pneumonia caused as many deaths in 1900 as cancer does today.

37."Life expectancy" in the last paragraph most probably means ____.

[A] the kind of life that a person may expect to live

[B] the mode of life that a group of people have lived

[C] the length of time that a person or an animal has lived

[D] the length of time that people may expect to live

38.On an average, people in America who were born in 1900 ____.

[A] had a life-span of 74 years

[B] lived a shorter but better life than those born later

Passage Three

Questions 39 to 43 are based on the following passage.

British writer Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction novel Childhood's End describes a future world society. The following is part of his description.

By the standards of all earlier ages, it was Utopia (a perfect society). Ignorance, disease, poverty, and fear had

soon it would lie outside the experience of all living men.

With the energies of society going to construction sites, the face of the world had been remade. It was a new world. ... Production had become largely automatic: the robot factories produced goods in such unending production lines that all the ordinary goods of life were practically free. Men worked in the interest of the comfort they wanted; or they did not work at all.

It was one world, although the old names of the old countries were still used. There was no one on earth who could not speak English, who could not read, who was not within range of a television set, who could not visit the other side of the planet within twenty-four hours. ...

Crime had almost disappeared. It had become both unnecessary and impossible. When no one lacks anything, there is no point in stealing …

One of the most obvious changes had been a slowing down of the mad speed that had so described(赋予… 特征)the twentieth century. Life was freer than it had been for generations. It, therefore, had less competing for the few, but more peacefulness for the many. Western man had relearned ------ what the rest of the world had never forgotten ------ that there was nothing wrong with relaxing as long as it did not fall into ordinary laziness ...

Education was now much more thorough and much more popular. Few people left college before twenty ------ and that was merely the first stage, since they usually returned again at twenty-five for at least three more years, after travel and experience had broadened their minds. Even then, they would probably take review courses at times for the rest of their lives in the subjects that particularly interested them ...

Another great change was the radical moving ability of the new society. Thanks to the efficiency of air transport, everyone was free to go anywhere at a moment’s notice. There was more room in the skies than there had ever been on the roads, and the twenty-first century had repeated, to a large degree, the great American achievement of putting a nation on wheels. It had given wings to the world ...

... There were plenty of specialists, but few creative workers broadening the areas of human knowledge. Curiosity remained, and the free time to enjoy it, but the heart had been taken out of original scientific research. It seemed fruitless to spend a life time searching for secrets that the great creators had probably found ages before ...

[A] the memory of war [B] the war [C] the bad dream [D] the past

Dear Mr. Shakespeare, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude. I am referring to that unfortunate accident the other day, when I was knocked off my bike by a taxi. If it had not been for your timely assistance in giving me first aid, I fear that the consequences might have been much serious. Everyone agrees that it was your quick-witted response in that emergency that has led to this satisfactory outcome. Although nowadays people in mounting numbers talk about the need to be unselfish, we see very few people practice what they preach.
