It all started in 2007 whenJames Bowen, a thirty-something drug addict

who survived by playing guitar onthe street, found an orange cat sitting in front of the door of his apartment.

Bowen noticed the cat was wounded.Without hesitation, the young man took him to the Humane Society and spent thelittle money he had on medicine to heal him.

Shortly thereafter, the cat,who was healing and feeling much better, began to follow the musician when heleft the house. Then one day the cat got on the bus that Bowen took to theplace where he worked.

That’s how the cat, who hadrecently been named Bob, began to accompany his human friend to his musicalperformances. Bob’s mere presence attracted the attention of passers-by. Heand Bowen would finish off each song with a high five. Pretty soon, the imagesof Bob wearing a scarf while sitting on the musician’s shoulder, or keeping himcompany while he played the guitar, began to go viral all over the world.

Eventually, the news found outabout the pair and did a story for the magazine Islington Tribune. It was not long after that when a book agentappeared in their lives and gave them a chance to tell their story.

Studies have shown most peoplefail to realize how much time they spend on their smart-ph oneseach day.

Frank and Amelia’s family wereput to a test, using a free app called

“Moment-screenTime Tracker”. The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—allsaid they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phoneseach day.

“Honestly, I don’t feellike I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on herphone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent aboutan hour per day on the phone, Frank spent close to four hours on his phone—whichcame as a shock to him. The children’s times varied but they often spent morethan a couple of hours on the phone as well.

Minneapolis-based DrKirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up a lot among families. Lind Seal saidmany family members’ phone use has become problematic.

“If we hear more thanonce, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phonedown? Did you hear what I said?’ it may be a sign that it is negativelyinfluencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.

Lind Seal said actually payingattention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step indeciding when to put it down.

She asks parents to encouragemore face-to-face communication for teens and youngadults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills.”What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems——when we spend a lot of time on our smart-phonesto communicate with ot her people she said.

As the international demand fornarrative films (纪录片)continues to increase with popular streamingservices like Netflix and others, the two questions then come:Will the coming generations receive most of their entertainmentthrough visual means rather than through the written word? Will such anincrease of narrative film reduce the importance of reading?

Growing examples of this trendinclude the dimishmentof fiction lovers, the ever-risingculture o f computer games, the wave of streaming services of wide internationalreach, and movies filled with special effects made for children and teenagers.Nor must we ignore the economic dangers that lie ahead for the written word. The narrative film industry is a moneymaker that

surpasses the publishingindustry.

The other underlying question,of course, is “does it really matter if the written word bows to the worldof narrative films?” From my point of view, any diminishment of fictiondelivered by words is a loss for mankind.

There is no greater humanfeature than the imagination. It lies at the very soul of the human species. Itis the brain’s most powerful engine. It is the essential muscle of life and likeall muscles it must be exercised and strengthened.

Writing and reading are theprincipal tools that inspire and create our imagination. Anything thatdiminishes that power is the enemy of mankind.

It should be known that I amnot opposed to new media and technological advances. Instead, I have alwaysfelt it necessary to adapt to advancing technology. In fact, a number of mynovels are in various stages of development for film, TV and live stageproductions. My hope is that the written word will only stand to becomplemented by technology, not pushed to the edge of extinction.

Of course, there are those whowill present arguments for the superiority of the moving image over the writtenword. Each has its place. My argument is for finding the right balance betweenit and the moving image.

(1)In what way do narrative films embarrass the written word according to Para 2?

A . Economic benefits.

B . International communication.

C . Cultural influence.

D . Educational technology.

(2)Why does the author value the role of the written word?

A . It strengthens our muscles.

B . It helps sharpen our imagination.

C . It distinguishes man from each other.

D . It paves the way for narrative films.

(3)What is the author’s attitude towards new media and technological advances?

A . Cautious.

B . Skeptical.

C . Positive.

D . Critical.

(4)What’s the best title of the passage?

A . Are Narrative Films Killing the Written Word?

B . Are Films Impacting Our Imagination?

C . Can Written Word Finally Beat Films?

D . Do Narrative Films Have a Bright Future?
