Pavarotti has concentrated mostly on Italian operas and songs. The territory that now makes up the United States was settled by people from England, France, Holland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and other countries. The Indians, of course, were already there.

Naturally, the nationalities in the colonies called one another by slang terms. Often the slang terms came from some name that was popular among a particular group. The equivalent of the English name James, for instance, is the common Spanish name Diego, pronounced

“dee-ay’goh”. That gives rise to the insulting word Dago applied to a Spaniard or to other South Europeans, such as the Italians.

The English in Connecticut were subjected to this same irritating device by the Dutch who, prior to 1664, occupied New Amsterdam (later New York). A common name among the English is John and to the Dutch this was Jan, pronounced “yan”. What was more natural than for the Dutch to call any Englishman Jan To make it more condescending and insulting, they used the diminutive form Janke (equivalent to Johnikins in English). This was pronounced “yan kuh” and that easily became Yankee.

The term, which originally applied to natives of Connecticut, later applied to all New Englanders and was eventually given to all Northerners by the Southerners and to all Americans by people of other countries.

21. The word Dago comes from the _____.

A). Dutch language B). English language

C). last names D). nicknames

D) who introduced the word Yankee

Task 2

After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony.

Nobel’s original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from $30,000 to$125,000.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobe l’s death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges’ decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes.

No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes.

26. When did the first award ceremony take place

A). 1895 B). 1901 C).1962 D). 1968

E-mail systems at thousands of companies and government offices around the world were attacked by a virus called “Mellissa” that disguises itself as “important message” from a friend.

Even though there was a weekend warning, more than 50,000 companies at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer experts said on Monday. The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly the next first work day by making computers send off dozens of e-mails containing the virus. Although the virus had no long-lasting damage to a computer, its effects were far-reaching.

Michael Vatis, a senior US official said military and government computers were damaged, along with thousands of the other institutions' systems.

The body of e-mail message says, “Here is what you ask for…” once the user opens it, the virus digs into the user’s address book and sends out messages to the first 50 address. The reason why the virus spread so rapidly is that you’re getting it from people you know and trust. So anyone who gets an unexpected e-mail with the “Important Message” subject line is advised not to open it and to delete it immediately.

The bee, like the ant, is a social insect. Bees live in groups in a hive, and every bee does certain work that helps the other members of the group. In a beehive there are three kinds of bees: the queen bee, the drones (male bees) and the workers. The worker bees go from flower to flower collecting nectar (the sweet liquid collected by bees from flowers). Bees draw this nectar into the honey sacks of their bodies, and enzymes(酶) in their bodies turn the nectar into honey. This newly-made honey zone(渗出物) passes slowly through the underside of the bees and is stored in cells in the hive to be used as food during the winter months. Some people are in the honey business and keep hundreds of hives. Beekeepers remove honey from the hive and pack it in bottles or jars. Honey usually appears as a clear golden-colored liquid, but this depends on the kind of flower from which the bees have taken the nectar.

26. Bees are called social insects because they _____.

A). live in groups B). live near people

C). need beekeepers D). work hard

27. What do bees do with nectar

A) They change it into sugar.

B) They change it into honey.

C) They give it to the queen bee.

29. The color of honey in its final stage depends on the _____.

C) quantity of water that the bees need

D) season in which the nectar is collected

D) The Three Types of Bees

Task 3

Hunza is a small land high in the mountains. Today it is part of the country of Pakistan. People in Hunza seem to grow old very slowly. Women who look 35 may really be 60. Men in their eighties play games like soccer. Many people in Hunza live to be over 100. Some even reach 130.

What gives the Hunzakuts their wonderful health Why do they live such long lives Now that a few scientists have visited Hunza, we can begin to answer these questions. Here are some of the reasons.

First of all, the Hunzakuts lead simple lives. From our point of view, they seem to have few worries. Most of them work long hours caring for small farms. They awake early and go to bed at sundown. Money worries are unknown because they seldom use money. They don't worry about crime because there are no criminals in Hunza. Jobs are not a problem since rich soil gives work to everybody.

Secondly the Hunzakuts spend a good part of each day either praying or resting. When they get up in the morning they pray for a while. Then all day long they work slowly and steadily. They stop now and then for a rest.

Lastly the Hunzakuts' plain diet is full of vitamins and minerals. They eat a lot of vegetables, but very little meat. They love fruits. All food goes right from the land to the table.

Investment is a key way for business to grow and for investors to make money. Numerous studies have shown that, on average, high-risk investors make more than low-risk ones. Over time the stock market rewards them for taking a risk, sometimes makes them suffer from heavy losses. Even during the 1980s, the decade of the stock market crash, one study shows that over the whole of the ten years shares profited higher than lower-risk fixed interest and property investments.

This brings us to the first basic rule relating to risk: high risk equals high return.

If you want to maximize your savings, take some risk with at least some of your money.

Keep in mind, though, the second rule relating to risk: diversity, or spread your eggs around lots of baskets. This is partly so you won't be hurt too badly if one company fails.

Research also shows that you won't be rewarded with high returns for the
