A gap year is often a time when young people travel or work to earn more money

for school.

Now, more Americans are showing an interest in the idea of a gap year. In the United States, it is common for you ng people to complete four years of high school at age 17 or 18. After they finish high school in spring, those who decide to attend college usually do so two-to-three months later. In 2016, Malia Obama, daughter of then-president Barack Obama, received a lot of media attention when she made the same choice.

Like Malia Obama, Rosalie Stoke also decided to put off the start of her studies by a year. Stoke was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She studies chemical engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech. After finishing high school, Rosalie connected with a family in Barcelona, Spain. They agreed to let her live with them and paid her a small amount to help care for their children for seven months. Rosalie studied Spanish during her free time in Barcelona. She then used money she earned from a part-time job she had in high school as well as money from her parents to travel for two months.

She felt different when she returned to the United States to begin her studies at Virginia Tech. She said she felt at ease and that she knew more about herself as a person. Also, when talking with friends who went straight to college from high school, she found many had a difficult time in their first year of college. The national anthem(国歌) and the national flag are the most solemn symbols of a nation. In China, playing or singing the national anthem and raising the national flag are routines done on a daily basis at Tiananmen Square, and there are always people traveling long distances to watch the ceremony.

This year's National Day also marked the first day for the national anthem law to take effect, in order to ensure appropriate use of the song “March of the Volunteers.” Inappropriately using the national anthem at private occasions, commercial events or as background music in public places will be taken as illegal. The lawbreakers, including those who deliberately change the lyrics, play or sing the national anthem in a distorted(歪曲的) or disrespectful way, can be detained(拘留)for up to 15 days or face further charge in more serious situations.

The national anthem “March of the Volunteers” with lyrics by poet Tian Han and music composed by Nie Er, honors those who fought on the front during World War II against Japanese invaders in northeast China. The song will be included in textbooks for primary and secondary schools, and people are encouraged to sing the national anthem on appropriate occasions to express patriotism(爱国主义).

Some Chinese internet users worry about whether they will break the law if they cannot sing the song well since they are tone-deaf.

“This is a misunderstanding”, Yu Hai,a CPPCC National Committee member, said “The national anthem legislation urges that the song should be played solemnly on formal occasions to show respect to the Chinese nation. And on important occasions, attendees shall pay respect to the song. So whether one can sing the song well or

Common knowledge says crossword puzzles and a few weird brain exercises are the No. 1 way to keep your brain young. But truth be told, the best brain sharpener may actually be where you live, science says.

In a small pilot study of 25 people, Kansas University researchers used a mapping software calle d Space Syntax to classify “walkable” neighborhoods, or areas with many nearby places to visit and a complex layout. A Walkable Neighborhood is a place where people live within walking distance to most places they want to visit, whether it is school, a grocery store, a park, church, a bank, retail shops, a drug store, and so on. Their data showed that older adults who lived in more walkable neighborhoods scored higher on cognition(认知) tests.

“This could be a relatively small contribution, but it could be i mportant.”

Watts, a researcher in Kansas University says. “We can’t change our age, we can’t change whether we have genetic alleles(遗传等位基因)that put us at risk, but we can change how we live.”

According to Watts, constantly walking in a more complex neighborhood could improve cognitive function for older adults. Plus, with more places to walk to and visit, older adults have more opportunities to socialize and exercise outside of the house.

However, for people with Alzheimer’s(阿兹海默氏症), a complex neighborhood layout could cause a risk; walkability might make it worse if the patients can get confused or lost easily.

Although “walkable” neighborhoods keep older brains sharp, experts warn against concluding that living in a walkable neighborhood can prevent Alzhe imer’s. A bigger follow-up study is in the works to determine why, exactly, walkable neighborhoods have so many brain benefits, Watts says.

32. What do we know about “walkable neighborhoods”?

A. Living in a walkable neighborhood can prevent Alzheimer’s.

B. Walkable neighborhoods make olde r adults stay inside the house.

C. People living there can walk to the grocery store conveniently.

D. It is quite difficult for older adults to walk in a complex layout.

33. Why is a walkable neighborhood beneficial to old adults?

A. It can enable older adults to find their homes easily.

B. It can make older adults live longer.

C. It can make older adults gain good genetic alleles.

D. It can help improve older adults’ cognitive level.

34. What will probably happen to the people with Alzheimer’s if they live in walkable neighborhoods?

A. They will keep their brains more active.

B. They will lose themselves frequently.

C. They will get better medical treatment.

D. They will get on well with others.

35. What is the best title for the text?

A. A Way to Sharpen Your Brain.

B. A Solution to Preventing Alzheimer’s.

C. A New Mapping Software.

D. A Complex Neighborhood Layout.

It includes airfare ($225), hotel ($170), dining out ($116) and dressing up ($95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank. 1. Book flights in advance The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. You can check Google Flights for a calendar of prices showing the cheapest days to fly from apps like Hopper to get real-time alerts when a fare is at its lowest price point. 2. Don't blow your budget on the gift If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money. 3. Use old dresses and suits You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding. While men have the option of repeating their suits, women are more likely to spend money on new clothes for the special occasion. But before you take out your wallet, consider reinventing something already in your

Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.
