I am terribly sorry to tell you that I have lost the valuable book you were so kind to lend me last week. I read it everyday and intended to finish it next month. But I am afraid it can never take the place of the old one. Old books are like old friends. Once lost, they can never be replaced. Fast food is becoming more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. Today, it“s certainly difficult to think of any other single thing that represents the fast pace of modern society as powerfully as fast food.

There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. The trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal ——saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. You just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready in no time. You can either eat it there or take it away. Second, its popularity is also attributed to the clean and comfortable environment of fast food restaurants, the excellent service, and the guaranteed qualith of food.

However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. It usually does not compose a balanced diet and is low in nutritional value. Thus, doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible. Although cooking at home is time —consuming and the following washing-up tiresome, it offers healthy and delicious meals your body likes and

Video Games

Video games have become very popular in recent years. Wherever you go, you can see youngsters or even adults indulged in the games. When they play the games in clubs, stores, or homes, they concentrate all their attention on them, with their hands busy operating. Obviously, video games give them great wonderful entertainment. They bring great pleasure to youngsters, train them to respond quickly, stimulate their imagination and interest in electronics and computer science. In short, video games play a good part in the development of youngsters intelligence.

Just as a coin has two sides, video games have also some disadvantage. Some young people especially school children, spend too much time playing them, which would do harem to their health and eyes and affect their school achievements. Only if one has enough self-control, can one benefit from video games.

Film Is Giving Way to TV

There are fewer film-goers now than before. The number of TV-watchers has been increasing. In 1975, there were only 5,000 TV-watchers and in 1985, the number increased 20 times. The increase is due to the development of TV industry. With the development of economy,

people are richer than before and many families can afford to buy color TV sets. People would prefer to stay at home to watch TV rather than go out to see a film.

Although film is giving way to TV, there are still some people who like watching films not only because good films are not shown on TV but because film has its own advantage.

Why I like to Read Newspaper

The newspaper is one of the many mediums of carrying information to us. No wonder people often say: “Even without stepping out of my house, I am well-informed of al that has been happening in the world.”

We get all kinds of news from newspapers. Newspapers can tell us about various events, past and future, domestic and foreign. Besides, they can teach us a lot of useful things. In fact, everyone can find something he wants from newspapers, and everyone enjoys reading them everyday.

Reading newspapers can widen our scope of knowledge. Not only they help us improve our reading ability but they can help us enhance our ideology. Because of all these benefits, I like reading newspapers.

My Opinion of Today’s Education

I think one of the main problems with today’s education is that too much emphasis is placed on test scores. It has become the most important criterion for college enrollment. A student, however creative and intelligent, will not be admitted into a college if his total scores are just one point less than required. It is also one of the crucial factors either in job assignment or in employment competitions.

The competition for high scores among students becomes intense. Students find themselves concentrating more on strategies to achieve high scores than on acquiring knowledge. They will play truant of some subsidiary course, skip over the substance which will not be tested on, even pump teachers for hints on upcoming exams. Teachers are apt to give their students high scores. As their job is judged mainly by the students’performance in terms of scores, some teachers tend to set easy papers to test their students on or narrow down the scope of the exam. Some teachers even leak “accidentally”the exam questions or lower their criterion of scoring.

As a result, the competition for high scores becomes so intense that it actually defeats academic goals of education.
