“Love and Logic” Formula (公式)

Bill Gates doesn’t pretend he lives in an ordinary household. When it comes to parenting his three children, Gates says he and his wife have been quite __31__ about the model they’ve used to raise their three children. He said the couple __32__ a 1970s “Love and Logic” parenting model. It’s a formula that was created by a group of three men —a mix of psychologists, psychiatrists and former school administrators. The core idea of their __33__ is centered on the idea that exercising emotional control, essentially minimizing emotional reactions like shouting kids.

“One of the greatest __34__ of applying Love and Logic is that it helps us learn how to keep a tighter control on our emotions and on our tongues,” co-founder Charles Fay wrote in a blog post ab out his model. Gates admits he and his wife haven’t been __35__ at carrying out the approach. “Can you get rid of the emotion? You can’t totally do it,” he said.

Aside from checking hot-blooded parent tempers, the love and logic model also stresses the importance of not leaning into rewards for kids, but instead demonstrating __36__ love and admiring kids for who they are, not what they do (or don’t) achieve,

like a poor test score or a bad grade. “Many __37__ successful people struggled with grades as chil dren,” Fay wrote on his site. “What’s most important is that our children develop good character, curiosity, and problem-solving skills.”

Gates says the “Love and Logic” method is a far cry from the way he grew up, but he knew he wanted to do things __38__ with his own kids. It wasn’t the only way he set __39__ for his children while they were growing up. None of his kids owned a cell phone until they were 14 years old. The children also will each get about $10 million of their parents fortune as inheritan ce, a mere part of their $90 billion. “We want to strike a balance where they have the freedom to do anything, but not a lot of money __40__ on them so they could go out and do nothing,” Gates once told TED.

(A)

Word spread quickly that Park’s Hardware would be closing.

Locals begged with Lin, the owner of the store, with no result. Running a small, family-owned hardware(五金器具)business was no longer a profit maker. The town’s affection for Park’s Hardware was just not enough to allow it to fight against the big warehouse stores down the road in Bangor.

It’s difficult to see a hardware store go. A hardware store is special because it sells the things that allow us to DIY, and in the process improves our surroundings to suit our tastes. There are few things more satisfying than a new coat of paint on a weary wall.

Some might argue this might be accomplished by shopping at the big warehouse stores. Well, maybe sometimes, but certainly not always. I remember once I was searching in one of a Bangor stores for a wireless door chime (音乐门铃) that Park’s didn’t carry. I found one, but didn’t understand the instructions on the package. I asked a clerk. The man took the package, examined it, said he didn’t know and walked away.

If I were at Park’s and asked, “Lin, can you … please …?” Lin w ould spring into action and together we would mix and match and measure until we made it.

Was it more expensive to shop at Park’s as opposed to a warehouse? In one way, yes —if I wanted to buy something big-ticket. But otherwise, no: I could buy a single screw at Park’s, and have it lovingly put in a little bag, for five cents —no charge for the accompanying pleasant conversation. At a warehouse I had no choice but to buy a box of hundred screws, and, if I were fortunate, receive at the cash register a “H ave a nice day”.

56. Park’s Hardware would be closing because _______.

A. the owner was moving

B. the affection was not enough

C. it couldn’t earn money

D. locals begged its owner

57. Why does the author write his experience in a Bangor store?

A. To indicate Park’s lacked wireless door chimes.

B. To describe the impolite behavior of the clerk.

C. To show respect for Lin’s good manners.

D. To compare different serving attitudes.

58. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means “_______”.

A. One had to pay if accompanied in the big warehouse store.

B. One could have nice conversations in the big warehouse store.

C. One was usually pleasantly treated in the big warehouse store.

D. One was unlikely to be accompanied in the big warehouse store.

59. The author felt _______ that Park’s Hardware would be closing.

A. fortunate

B. sorry

C. satisfied

D. guilty

Have you wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Birds, especially seagulls are very fond of locusts(飞蝗), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect them. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks of trees.

An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid is over, its enemies cannot find it, and it quickly swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.

63. Locusts are pests but they aren’t easily wiped out by their enemies because _______.

A. they are powerful enough

B. they are dangerous to their enemies

C. they take on the same colours as crops

D. they fly very fast

64. The pests that have different colours from plants usually appear at night because

_______.

A. their enemies can easily find them and eat them

B. it’s easy for them to destroy plants in darkness

C. they have the habit of coming out in darkness

D. birds take their rests when night comes

65. A certain fish living in seas has lived through millions of years because _______.

A. it is the most powerful in the sea

B. no other fishes can swim as fast as it can

C. the liquid it sends out can kill its enemies

D. it can send out a kind of liquid to protect itself.

66. This passage mainly talks about _______.

A. animals or pests can dye themselves different colours

B. the protective colouration of animals and pests

C. how a certain sea fish protects itself

D. the change of colour in locusts

Section C

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

How to Protect Yourself from Hackers Online

An increase in cyber-attacks(网络攻击) makes the Internet seem like a scary place these days. How can individuals protect or make it more difficult for hackers to access their information? Here are several tips that can help you protect against cyber-attacks:

67

Hard passwords include upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. They should be at least eight characters in length. They should also not spell out words easy for hackers to find, like your pet’s name or the name of a family member.

Change your password regularly

A very common mistake made by users is to create one hard password, but then never change it. Remembering a long list of complicated passwords can be difficult. But no password is unbreakable. Hackers are better able to hack multiple accounts if those accounts all have the same password. A password management service, like Dashlane or PasswordBox, can help you keep track of hard passwords. 68

Clear your browser (浏览器) history

This goes for all the devices you use in a day — your home computer, your work computer, or your friend’s iPad. Internet browsers like Firefox or Chrome keep track of where you’ve been and what you’ve done online. They keep records of every site you visited. 69 It is very easy for anyone who sees that information to steal a detailed record of your online activities.

Do not use free Wi-Fi

An increasing number of public places now offer free wireless access to the Internet. Often, a user does not need a password to connect to these wireless networks. These services might be us eful, but they’re also an easy way for hackers to access everything on your device.

Use anti-virus protection

There are many anti-virus services available for users. 70 Some anti-virus services are even free. They are a great way to have a professional help keeping users

one step ahead of hackers.

IV. Summary Writing

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Classrooms of the Future

Online “classroom” experience is far different than anything students did in school. Thanks to current technology, many students have benefited from online learning.

Online courses offer many benefits that help public schools meet the educational needs of today’s students. Through online schools, students can access a variety of courses, including college prep courses, which may not be available to them at their local public schools. Enrollment in these courses also allows students access to virtual laboratories and the finest libraries in the country, no matter where they live.

Online courses provide flexibility in student schedules. Students can log on anywhere at any time to complete their class work. Students involved in extracurricular activities, those who have been hospitalized, or those who are behind in earning required credits can meet their educational needs through enrollment in online classes.

Students in traditional schools can fall behind if they have difficulty understanding concepts the rest of the class easily grasps. Virtual schools, on the other hand, offer a pace that meets every student’s needs, allowing more time to master a difficult algebra concept or the opportunity to interact with an engineer applying scientific principles in the workplace.

Still, some remain doubtful about online education. They worry that online classes will not be demanding enough to prepare students as well as traditional classrooms do. They should not worry. A Department of Education report suggests that students enrolled in online classes performed better than those in traditional schools. In fact, Florida Virtual School, the nation’s largest virtual high school, boasts higher scores in its advanced courses than many traditional public schools.

Today’s technology provides multiple avenues for students to become better prepared for college and to pursue careers in today’s global economy. Let’s be willing to give online classes a chance to show how constructive they can be in helping today’s students receive the best education possible.

M: No. That was two years ago. We let it go to live in the forest with the other bears. The problem is, every spring, people bring us baby bears from their garages to raise. All summer, we feed them, clean up after them, and play with them. I was up all night with a hungry “baby”.

W: What a lot of work! I guess it’s part of living next to the forest.

M: Well, we love animals, you know. And this year, we’re hoping to raise some money for equipment and food. You wouldn’t believe how many apples a young bear can eat!

W: What else do you buy?

M: Cages, small toys to keep them entertained, and lots and lots of towels. Bears are very messy!

Now listen again, please.
