42.

In writing assignments in English classes my students frequently ra ise the topic of friendship. Reading what they write, I start to understand Chi nese friendship obligations. Chinese can usually expect more from their friends than Americans can. For instance, once a student wrote that she understood tha t her friend wanted to go shopping. My student was busy and really had no time to do that, but she kept silent, put her work aside and went shopping with her friend. This is quite different from what American young people would say about friendship. In the U.S. you feel free to ask your friend for help, but you recognize that the friend may say no, if they give you a reason. A friend in Ch ina is someone who, sensing that you are in need in some way, offers to assist you without waiting to be asked. In China there are few limits on what you can ask or expect of a friend.

Another difference is that Chinese expect friendships to be more la sting. They think a true friendship is a relationship that endures through chan ges in the lives of the friends. In the U.S. a person is likely to change even “best friends” several times over the years. Even the relationship in which p eople feel close emotionally and tell each other their secrets and personal pro blems may not survive life changes such as a move to another city, graduation f rom university, a significant change in economic circumstances, or the marriage of one of the friends. I think the reason is that friendship, like so many oth er relationships in the U.S. including marriage, depends on frequent interactio n with the other person. If the people involved do not see each other and inter act regularly, the relationship is likely to fade and die.

Everyone needs friends, and if you fail to make friends, you should examine yourself and see if there is something wrong with your personality.

Maybe you have social faults such as snobbishness, talkativeness, u sing slang, etc., which drive away your new acquaintances. Whatever your social faults may be, look at them honestly, and make a real effort to correct the m.

To be friendly you must feel friendly. Cheerfulness is the basis of friendliness. A cheerful person smiles. A smile is a magnet which draws peopl e. Smile at someone and you are almost sure to get a smile in return.

A friendly person does his best to make a stranger feel at home, wh erever he happens to be. Put yourself in the other fellow’s place and make him feel welcome.

Try to remember names. It makes your new acquaintances feel happy w hen you call them by their names. It gives them the feeling that they have made an impression on you and that must mean something to them because you remember them.

If you do not agree with other people on a certain matter, you shou ld appear to be friendly. Do not argue, but discuss. You always lose friends if you argue too much.

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the worl d, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Can ada.

In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disabilit y. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get old er, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesigh t.

Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get old er. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by pe ople’s attitude towards them.

Disables people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopp ing or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not

get up steps. Or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not se e where you were going or could not hear the traffic” But there are other barr iers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably repre sents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is impo rtant to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual pe rson and their ability, not their disability, which counts. Michael, a typical American, stays at home on workdays. He plugs in to his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After wo rk, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or p lays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Mi chael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible. The inventions of moder n technology seem to be cutting us off form contact with our fellow human bein g.

The world of business is one area in which technology is is olating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to wor k at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office cl erks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminal s in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ s alaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper check s unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines t o put in or take our money from their accounts.

Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at c oncert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their livi ng rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie ente rtainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appe ar on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laugh

ing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms. (倍速P130) [共5题]
