A friend is better than fortune.

A friend is worse than poison in some cases.

The two sentences above have opposite meanings and seem to be unreasonable, but they can be explained as follows; the first refers to all good friends who drive us towards good ways while the second refers to all bad ones who lead us into bad ways.

My ideal friend is of course a good friend whose goodness is shown below: He has no bad habits, such as smoking and drinking. He lives in frugality(节俭). He studies hard so as not to waste his golden time. At home he honors his parents and loves his brothers; at school he respects his teachers and shares the feelings of his classmates. He treats those truly who are true to him. In a word, he has all the good characteristics that I don’t have. I can follow him as a model. With his help I can be free from all difficulties.

Indeed, if I have such a person as my friend, I shall never fear difficulty and shall never know the existence of the word “failure”.

59. The article is written to explain __ .

A. how to make friends with others.

B. what kind of person we should make friends with.

D. what kind of person the writer’s friend is.

60. In the view of the writer, an ideal friend refers to .

A. a friend without bad habits

B. a famous man

C. a respectable man

D. a perfect man

6l. From the passage, we can learn that .

D. the writer has only a little to learn from his ideal friend.

62. From the passage, we can infer that the writer is sure that .

A. nothing can be done without friends.

B. he who does not smoke or drink must be a good friend.

C. good friends mean a great deal to him.

D. good friends should always help each other.

(D)

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质)of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).

Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.

At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(过错)in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.

Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.

There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense os humor(幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!

Life in Senior

Life in Senior is both tiring, exciting and meaningful.

As everyone knows, Senior is far from relaxing and easy. Every minute counts. Working late at night is often the case. There is much homework and we have to take many exams, such as monthly exams.

We have to meet with and overcome a lot of difficulties in our studies. To our delight, we have made constant and great progress with the help of the teachers.

Besides our lessons, of course, we also manage to make full use of free time to relax ourselves, girls reading colorful magazines and boys playing basketball.

Though we are busy and tired, we still feel happy and confident of our future.
