A

“For university I have to get a summer job.” I heard a secondary-school student telling his friend.“But it won’t be a factory job. What would I learn from a factory job?”

I’d like to tell him about the lessons I learned from a factory job the summer before my last year in secondary school, many years ago. On my first day on the job, in a paint factory, the plant manager said to me, “I need another pair of sky hooks. Would you go into the next department and get some?”Off I went. There was no sky hook in that department. I was sent to another one, then another. I ended up visiting every department in the factory. When I returned empty-handed, I was told with much laughter there was no such thing as a sky hook. This is the way the factory used to get to know a new hire. Learning the social skill of accepting good-natured hazing (捉弄) was my first lesson.

Before working inside the paint factory, a new hire had to scrape (刮去) and paint the outside of the building. After working in the hot sun, I returned home with tired hands, and I learned to respect the honest factory worker, man or woman. When I started painting the next day, I was no t sure how to do it because of my experience. The managers knew that. When I finished the first side of the wall, all the nearby workers came out and cheered for me. The memory of that day is still with me. I learned that the fruit that we get from honest labour is one of the sweetest of all pleasures.

On certain days, when the ship came, six workers were picked to unload 50-pound bags of paint ingredients. We started at 7 a.m., and when we finished we could go home. If everyone worked hard, the afternoon was free time. It was a great management tool. I learned it is possible to make a difficult task into a good exercise in teamwork.

I learned so much that summer. I hope the secondary-school student would not refuse a factory job if he is offered one.

61. The writer wrote down his experience in a factory in order to show that _______.

A. life is hard in a factory

B. it is valuable to work in a factory

A. came back with some sky hooks

B. visited all the departments and met many workers

C. realized it was a joke and did not get angry

D. tried to get some sky hooks from another place

63. After the writer did the unloading with five other workers he thought _______.

A. the factory could have sent only three workers for the job

B. unloading heavy bags was a good exercise for him

C. it was clever of the manager to make them work as a team

D. good tools were important even for unloading work

64. The writer learned from his time in the factory that _______?

A. no job is easy in the world

B. honest labour can be a real pleasure

C. workers should respect one another

D. a successful factory depends on a good management

B

The year of 2014 has been jam-packed with the good, the bad, and the ugly. But no matter what has happened, smart people have always been busy inventing. Here are some of the inventions of 2014 that have helped to make the world better, smarter, and even a little more fun.

Selfie stick

If 2013 was the year of the selfie, then this year was the year of the selfie stick. Wherever you go in the world, you’re likely to see them being used by everyone from backpackers and groups of friends to skiers on a mountain.

Selfie sticks come in many different shapes and sizes and can hold your camera, or smartphone, at a distance to help you find better photo angles and take better group photos.

Most selfie sticks use a handheld bluetooth button, which allows the photo to be tak en when you’re ready.

Companies have jumped on the trend and made many different types of selfie sticks, such as hairbrushes that can hold your phone and the classic extendable (可拉伸的) selfie sticks that “add genuine value” to picture taking, according to mobile analyst Van Baker.

Wireless electricity

Most of us could not bear to live without wireless Internet. We use it every day from our phones to our cars. But one company wants to go a step further, by making electricity wireless.

No more tangled wires, and no more having to sit holding your cell phone near a power socket (插座) in the corner of the room. WiTricity, a company in the US, has invented technology that can power objects up to 2.4 meters away. It uses a special plug-in coil (线圈) that creates a magnetic field (磁场).

‘Super banana’

Australian biogeneticist James Dale visited Uganda, a poor African country, in the early 2000s. He noticed that in Sub-Saharan Africa, 15-30 percent of children under 5 were at risk of going blind because of a lack in Vitamin A intake. Dale also learned that people there often grow bananas, and eat 3 to 11 bananas a day. However, the type of bananas grown there are low in vitamins, so he came up with an idea: planting bananas with added nutrition to improve Ugandan people’s health.

With the help of Bill Gates’ foundation, Dale developed the “super banana”. He added a gene to the fruit, making it rich in Vitamin A. In June, super bananas began human trials in the US.

3-D printing

It is a rare thing for an invention to be able to affect everything we do in our daily lives. But 3-D printing is one of those rare inventions.

This year has finally seen 3-D printers being used in a wide range of industries for the first time. By using a digital blueprint, a kind of coded instruction manual (手册), 3-D printers can print anything you tell them to with many different materials.

This year we have seen 3-D printed human tissue, toys, guns, and even pizza. This is the year in which the 3-D printer has revolutionized the way we produce things.

Once, two phoenix birds flew over a small village in Hunan province. The village was so beautiful that the birds never wanted to leave. This legend (传说) was recited to me during my visit to Fenghuang, adding a mythical (神秘的) touch to this ancient town.

Fenghuang is a snapshot (快照) of idyllic (田园诗般的) village life in rural China. Set alongside the banks of the Tuojiang River, Fenghuang is full of small, winding alleys and surrounded by lush, green hills. Having travelled directly from the bustling city of Changsha, Fenghuang was a breath of fresh air.

When I visited Fenghuang, it was July. My friend and I excitedly explored, walking along the ancient city wall and crossing the beautiful, old bridges. Despite the crowds of tourists, it seemed as if life in this corner of China had not changed for centuries. People were very relaxed. They were never bothered by the hot weather nor by the tourists, walking, eating and playing outdoors. On our first evening we bought spicy, cold noodles from a street vendor and ate on the riverbank as we watched the sun set.

We stayed in a small hotel similar to many of the traditional buildings in the village. Our room was built on high stilts (桩子) over the banks of the river. From our window we could hear the rush of the water and the sounds of excited tourists travelling in small boats downstream. Even in modern times, the river continues to be the life of the village. We saw people busy at work catching fish, or ferrying tourists for sightseeing. Young children played in shallow waters and families washed their clothes and utensils (厨具).

Although there were many visitors to Fenghuang, we did not spot any other foreign people during our stay. It felt like we’d found a treasure to know that we had visited somewhere off the beaten track!

After two days’ exploring the village, I could fully understand the legend of the phoenix. I was reluctant to leave.

Carly Lindmeier sits on the patio of her father’s house in Orange County, California. The 20-year-old is finishing up wooden monograms (字母图案) to send to her customers.

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that Lindmeier has a life-threatening disease. Like many young people in California, she loves hanging out at the beach and watching TV shows. She attends college and plans to become a speech pathologist But after spending some time with Lindmeier, you’ll notice that her voice sounds rough. She was born with cystic fibrosis (囊肿性纤维化), a disease that damages the lungs and the digestive system.

“Imagine having to breathe through a straw,”Lindmeier said. “That’s what it feels like to have cystic fibrosis.”

While the present might be the most exciting time in her life, it could also be frightening. For cystic fibrosis victims (患者), death in childhood or ea rly adulthood is common, with an average life expectancy of 37. “When I turned 20, it was kind of tough to realize that I was already middle-aged,”Lindmeier said. “Five years from now, it’ll probably be worse.”

Despite her illness, Lindmeier stays positive. Looking for a way to raise awareness about this disease, Lindmerier came up with the idea of selling a variety of decorated, wooden monograms, each dedicated to a fallen cystic fibrosis patient. She named it 65 Wooden Roses. Each monogram is hand-made and starts at $24.99 (158 Yuan), with 20 percent of income going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the US. Launched in July, her business has already brought attention to the disease all over the US.

Meanwhile, Lindmeier has a positive outlook on her own illness. In July a new treatment, Orkambi, was released, making it possible to keep the disease under control. It could help patients to live decades longer. Although Lindmeier has to pay $6,000 every year for the expensive drug, she plans to start taking it. For her, it’s a small price to pay for an improved quality of life and she is determined not to let cystic fibrosis hold her back. “I could just be sad that I have cystic fibrosis, or I could do something to make my life worth living and be happy,”she said, “happiness really is a choice. I choose to be ha ppy.”

73. Which of the following statements is TRUE about cystic fibrosis?

A. Its victims may have trouble breathing.

B. Its victims can only live to around 50 years old in average.

C. It is a disease that affects the heart and the digestive system.

D. So far, no effective way to keep the disease under control has been found.

74. Why does Lindmeier make a variety of wooden monograms?

A. She considers it a good way to kill time.

B. She wants to donate them to cystic fibrosis patients.

C. She expects to earn enough money to treat her disease.

D. She wants to draw people’s attention to cystic fibrosis.

75. Which of the following words can best describe Lindmeier?

A. Emotional and helpful.

B. Positive and cautious.

C. Independent and humorous.

D. Determined and optimistic.

易丢分的为1小题,原题:hat didn’t the an advie Ti t d? 1 ①harit shps in the U sell ne things

This ind f shps sell used things lie … Peple give the aa t the shp The ne ill help peple h have diffiult aling做了小小的改动,把peple h have diffiult aling改成了heless peple,轻描淡写地设了一个套。 Red Nse Da is nt the nl a t raise ne fr harit这句话。

3. I am from Canada. ____ from the U.S.A.
