Section A (30 points, 2 for each)

Directions: There are there passages in this part. Each of the three passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choice marked A, B,C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:

In the traditional marriage, the man worked at a job to earn money for the family. Most men worked in an office, a factory or some other places away from home. Sine the man earned the money, he paid the bills. The money was used for food, clothes, a house and other family needs. The man made most of the decisions. He was the boss.

In the traditional marriage, the woman seldom worked away from the house. She stayed at home to care for the children and her husband. She cooked the meals, cleaned the house, washed the clothes and did other household work. Her job at home was very important.

In recent years, many couples continue to have a traditional relationship of this kind. The man has a job and earns the money for the family. The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house. Many Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. But some other Americans have a different impression of marriage and family responsibilities.

There are two important differences in male and female roles now. One is that both men and women have many more choices. They may choose to marry or to stay single. They may choose to work or stay at home. Both men and women may choose roles that are comfortable for them.

A second difference in male and female roles is that within marriage many decisions and responsibilities are shared. The husband and wife may choose to have children, or they may not. If they have children, the man may take care of them some of the time, all of the time, or not at all.

The woman may want to stay at home and take care of the children. Or she may want to go to work. Men and women now decide these things together in a marriage. Many married people now share these decisions and the responsibilities of their families.

46. Which of the following is NOT true in the traditional marriage?

B. The woman made most of decisions.

C. The woman stayed at home to care for the children.

D. The man paid the bills.

47.In recent years, ____.

A. young couples reject the traditional relationship

The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house. Many Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. 48.Men and women may now choose all the following EXCEPT to ____.

A. marry or to stay single

D. leave their jobs just because they have children

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:

Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf,

tennis, or it may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is coursed probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man—made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind that it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man—made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should not be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger

and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alpes. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

Section B short Answer Questions(15 points,3 for each)

Directions:Answer each of the questions in less than 10 words.

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:

In a classroom in any country, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she teaches something behind the culture of the country.

In a country such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they pay much attention to personal ideas. Teachers try to make each student special. Students do not have to remember a lot of information, instead, they work and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age students learn to have their

own ideas.Their education encourages personal thought. The importance is placed on how to arrive at an answer and not just to get the correct answer.

In most Asian countries people have the same language, history and culture.Perhaps for this reason, the education there pays more attention to group goals.Children in China and Japan offen work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the ways of teaching are offen very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.

In many ways these differences come from different educational ideas. In Western countries teachers are taught to help students to learn. They make it easier for the students to learn by themselves. In some Asian countries, however, teachers often feel that their job is to pass knowledge to students.

61.Do students in the United States have to remember a lot of information?

62.There is often discussion in the classroom in America, isn’t there?

This is, to remind or to fine. I’m in favor of reminding them. My reasons are as follows. At first, what I think is that those who smoke or spit in public may not have noticed the warning signs and that they don’t do it on purpose. Then in the meantime, if they are fined, they’ll feel hatred for society, which is not in accordance with social harmony. Here come my suggestions. We may as well set up some warning signs in the place that can attract people’s attention, in which way they can realize their mistakes and correct them willingly. In addition, I recommend making them aware of the duty of protecting our environment via public-service advertisements in the newspaper or on TV. That’s all for my opinions. I am waiting for your ideas. (Others think these people should be fined properly because, generally speaking, those who go against the rules are usually frequent wrong-doers. So they will not learn to obey rules unless they are taught a lesson. What’s more, reminders won’t work on them any longer.) Yours, Li Hua
