In ancient China, a woman told the best stories. She married an emperor(皇帝).Sadly, one day, this woman became ill and died. Everyone thought the emperor would soon find another favourite among his wives, but the emperor was very sad. He spent more and more time in his garden, and less and less time caring for the needs of his people. Everyone in the kingdom was worried.

One day, a priest(牧师)passed when some children were playing with their dolls. The dolls made dancing shadows on the wall. This gave the priest an idea. He knew the stories the emperor's wife used to tell. What if he could bring those stories to life?

The priest made a puppet(木偶)out of bits of clay(黏土).He painted the puppet to look somewhat like the emperor's wife. When the puppet was finished, the priest silently walked into the emperor's garden, carrying his puppet, a candle and a curtain. He placed the curtain near the emperor's chair. He placed his candle, his puppet and himself behind the curtain. He waited for the emperor to appear.

The emperor did not even notice the curtain at first. The dancing shadow drew his eyes. As the priest moved the puppet behind the curtain, he told wonderful stories as the emperor's wife. In Britain. Boxing Day is usually celebrated on December 26th, which is the following day after Christmas Day. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.

The exact origin(起源)of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest(神父)on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in exchange for the saying of a mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.

One more thought is about the "Alms Box" placed in every church on Christmas Day.

Worshippers(做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas. That is why that day became known as Boxing Day.

Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating(捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.

How do you get to school every day? By bus or car? Song Kexin, a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Xiamen, prefers to go to school on her bike. "It's the quickest and easiest way to get to school," she said. "When there's a traffic jam, I feel the freedom while passing so many car lines."

China was once known as the kingdom of bicycles. But these years, the popularity of bicycles in

Europe is rising. Last year, more bicycles were sold than cars in Europe, according to the BBC.

Cycling is a safe, clean and cheap way to get around the city. It makes both traffic jams and pollution less, and is great for our health.

Of course, Rome wasn't built in a day. The popularity of cycling in many European countries is greatly because of bike-friendly policies.

As the traditional "cycling capital" in Northern Europe, Copenhagen's roads keep bicycles and motor cars separated(分离)as much as possible. On these roads, there are pre-green lights for cyclists. These kinds of bicycle traffic lights turn green a few seconds before car traffic lights do. They give the cyclists time to avoid traffic while they are crossing.

In Amsterdam, people can hire a bike from almost anywhere in the city. You can start from three hours and the average price for a full day is 8 euros (66.8 yuan).

This year, in Ruian, there are also similar policies to hire public bikes. It's only 20 yuan for a full day. Do you see them around the city? It's important to be safe when you are cycling. If you remember the following ideas, you will be safer.

■Although you may think a helmet(头盔)is not cool, it can protect your head if you fall down. Just choose the one that fits you best.

■Stop at all stop signs and obey red lights just as cars do. It's a good idea to walk your bike across busy crossings by following traffic lights.

■If you are cycling with friends, ride in a line. Don't ride with each other side by side.

Populations of white-tailed deer(白尾鹿) are growing rapidly in many parts of the United States. As populations grow, food becomes a problem. Many deer die of hunger. Others grow up small and unhealthy. In search of food, hungry deer move closer to where humans live. They eat farm crops, vegetables and even trees. Besides, increased numbers of deer near roads can cause traffic accidents.

People admire the grace and fast speed of deer. Most people don't want these animals to be hungry and ill. Should people take action to control the growing deer populations?

Should People Take Direct Action?

Many people think that hunting(打猎) is the best way to control the animal populations. Wildlife managers will see if there's enough food in an area and decide its carrying capacity(容量). Then hunters with licenses are sent to help control the number of deer. Hunting is usually not allowed in cities or suburbs, however.

Some people have the idea to catch the deer and move them to other places. But this method

is expensive and requires finding another place that can accept the deer without breaking the balance of ecosystem(生态系统).

Scientists are also working to develop chemicals(化学药品) to control the birth rate(率)

in deer populations. But this plan works for only one year at a time.

Should People Take Indirect Action?

Some suggest bringing in natural enemies of deer, such as wolves, lions and bears, to areas with too many deer. But these animals could also hurt dogs, cats, and even humans. Other communities have built tall fences(篱笆) around areas to keep out the deer. However, this is impossible for farmers.

Some people are against any kind of action. They support leaving the deer alone. Animal populations in an area naturally go up and down over time. Doing nothing means that some deer will die of hunger or illness. But finally, the population will reach a size within the carrying capacity(容量) of the environment. So, let nature go its own way.

(2)Which of the following is the best to fill in the " ▲ " in the passage?

A. Should People Do Nothing?

A. farmers can build fences to keep the deer out

What can we learn from the special, very successful people in the world who make the impossible possible?

Lesson 1: Ways of creative thinking are needed

Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both dropped out of college. They prefer to teach themselves because they like to develop their own ways of thinking. They think standard ways of teaching might stop people from being creative and having new ideas.

Lesson 2: The answer might not be what you expect

Find your answers from facts-not start with an expectation of what you will find. Stephen Jacobsen believed what he was taught: that water on Earth came from icy comets(封星) or planets which hit into Earth.

However, by studying a special rock, he discovered that it acted like a sponge(海绵). This suggested that Earth's water might have come from inside, driven to the surface to form the oceans, by geological activity.

"I had a pretty hard time making others believe it, "he said. "But thinking about the fact that you may be the first person to see something for the first time doesn't happen very often. When it does, it's amazing."

Lesson 3: A little luck goes a long way

Years of planning went into a recent achievement in space travel. The European Space Agency's "Philae", a robot landing craft, met up with Comet 67P, which was 480 million kilometres away. The trip from Earth by "Philae" had taken ten years!

The scientists had no idea what the surface of the comet would be like. If the landing failed, it would be impossible to get information from the spacecraft. Twenty years of work would have been wasted.

When "Philae" tried to land, it bounced(弹起)away from the comet's icy surface twice. Luckily, however, "Philae" landed successfully and began sending information back to Earth. (1)Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg left college because____________.

A. they preferred to learn by themselves

B. they needed standard ways of teaching

C. their teachers didn't like their new ideas

D. their teachers weren't able to teach them

(2)In Lesson 2, the writer mainly wants to tell us that___________.

(英语)九年级上册英语阅读理解的基本方法技巧及练习题及练习 题(含答案) 一、阅读理解 1.阅读理解 "Without music, life would be a mistake, "famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friedrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some American schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算). For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1, 000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That's partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn't tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often. However, learning music is beneficial(有益的)in many ways. When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth K. Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time. Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music:Einstein played the violin and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano. (1)Some schools in the US cut music classes, because ____. A. they were too difficult to learn B. students in the US weren't interested in music C. the schools wanted to control budgets D. there weren't enough music teachers in the US (2)In Paragraph 2, what does the underlined word "them" refer to(指代)?
