Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher

education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

Mrs. Blouse had been with the Johnson family for three generations. This was no mean feat for an article of clothing. She had survived the test of time;

and though her colors were faded and her material worn thin, she was still loved through and through.

Mrs. Blouse could never forget the day when Great Grandma Johnson had first discovered her on the clothing rack – it was love at first sight! GG had held her up to the light and laughed as she exclaimed, “this is the perfect blouse; I’ll never part with it.”

Well, good old GG hadn’t quite lived up to her word. After years of garden parties and beach picnics GG had passed Mrs. Blouse on to her daughter, Grandma Johnson. This was the beginning of a difficult season. The special attention that GJ gave her made the other clothing jealous! Ms. Skirt and Mrs. Scarf were particularly mean towards her. Eventually, they even managed to turn Ms. Undergarment against her!

GJ often wore Mrs. Blouse on special occasions; this was an encouragement for Mrs. Blouse in light of all the ridicule she endured. In fact, whenever Mrs. Blouse was feeling depressed she would turn to her memories: walking through the park with GJ

on the first day of spring, feeding the new baby together, or just baking cookies in the kitchen.

Today Mrs. Blouse was again being passed on to another family member! Mrs. Blouse was both excited and nervous – how would Mrs. J and her current clothing treat her?

Much to her delight, the new clothes accepted her with open arms! She discovered that some articles of clothing had been with the family for five generations –Great, Great Grandpa’s winter coat! The y hit it off together and were soon swapping stories of the good old days. The other garments listened eagerly. This new season would bring joy once more!

第二卷(非选择题35分)

第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)

第一节:对话填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life; death and taxes.

Taxes consist of the money which people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.

Salaried people who earn more than a few thousand dollars must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies from person to person. It depends on their salaries. That is, the percentage of the tax increases as a person's income increases.

The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, a percentage charged to any item bought in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a packet of cigarettes for twenty-five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in that state, then he has to pay twenty-seven

cents. Some states use income tax in addition to sales tax to raise their revenues (税收) . The state tax laws are diverse and confusing.

The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (people who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is charged on cars in a city. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departments, public works and government buildings.

Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They say that it spends too much of their tax dollars on useless and impractical programs. Although Americans have different views on many issues, they tend to agree on one

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room.
