Computer programs (程序) can do a lot of things. But they might be even smarter than you think.

AlphaGo is a program made by Google’s company DeepMind. From May 23 to 27, AlphaGo played Go games (围棋) with the world’s top Go player Ke Jie. AlphaGo beat (打败) the 19-year-old Chinese 3-0.

Programs like AlphaGo are called “artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能)”. AI is when computers or computer programs have smart behavior. For example, it can think or act like a human.

Scientists now are trying to make AI do everything from driving cars to writing stories, reported The New York Times. This worries some people. UK scientist Stephen Hawking said that the “development (发展) of AI could mean the end of humans”.

But others don’t think this will happen. They believe AI can help people solve many hard problems in science and technology

(技术), like analyzing (分析) medical information and curing (治疗) illnesses. It is a tool for us to learn new things in different areas.

New pasta takes shape

Pasta is a popular staple food (主食) in Western countries. It comes in different shapes. Some look like tubes (管子). Some look like spirals (螺旋). But this special pasta can change into any shape when it cooks.

Wen Wang and Lining Yao are researchers from MIT (美国麻省理工学院), US. The team has made a special kind of pasta, reported Yahoo News. It sits flat in the package. But when you put it into water, it changes into a flower or other pasta shapes. The team used gelatin (明胶), starch (淀粉) and 3-D printing technology to make the special pasta.

It is good news for food makers, says the team. In the future, they can make their food flat. It will save them lots of space and money for packaging.

There’s only one problem now: the special pasta is mostly gelatin. It looks pretty, but doesn’t taste as good as real pasta.

The team says they will keep improving the pasta. They hope one day they can make a self-folding (自动折叠的) dumpling!
