As an intercultural communication, translation is playing a more and more important role in today’s world. Whatever difficulties translation teachers 31 in their professional training, it is their duty to find out effective solutions to 32 problems. Here are some suggestions:

Training students to be excellent language switchers

Pattern of expression in some way 33 pattern of thinking. And the difference in mode of expression between two languages is 34 in their unique ways of thinking. So in translator training the teacher should try to help students think as 35 language speakers do. He should point out the major differences in mode of thinking between the two languages. For example, the major differences between the Chinese way of thinking and the English way of thinking include:

1) Chinese is featured by parataxis, which determines that the relation between sentence parts is loose and unclear. English is 36 by hypotaxis, which decides that English speakers give much attention to word organization.

2) Chinese speakers are subjective. As a result, when they produce sentences they 37 to use personal subject or no subject. English speakers are relatively objective. In sentence-making they often use impersonal subject

3) Chinese people observe things 38 . Therefore, in their words ideas are arranged together according to the order of physical or mental time. They seem equally important; the relation among them is not clear because no connective word is used between them. When English people observe things, they can always find out the most important thing from them and arrange the thing in the main clause of a sentence as the information focus in their speaking or writing. Other things will be stated in dependent clauses or various kinds of phrases.

4) In narrating, Chinese speakers mention things from the past to the present while English speakers follow the 39 line. In logical reasoning, Chinese speakers put reasons or evidences before the result or conclusion, but English speakers just do the other way round.

III. Reading Comprehension

Section A

Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

It is well-known that twins are closer to each other than most brothers and sisters ---- after all, they probably spend more time with each other. Parents of twins often notice that they develop special ways of communicating: they 40 their own words and one can often finish the other's sentence. In exceptional 41 , this closeness becomes more extreme: they invent a whole language of their own, as in the case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy from Georgia in the USA, who communicated so successfully in their own special language that they did not speak any English at all until after they started school.

However, these special relationships are the result of lives spent almost entirely in each other's 42 . What happens when twins do not grow up together, when they are 43 at birth for some reason? Are they just like any other strangers, or are there still special similarities between them? Professor Tom Bouchard, of the University of Minnesota, set out to find the answer to this question. He 44 sixteen pairs of twins, who were adopted by different families when they were babies, and often brought up in very different circumstances. Each twin was then interviewed about every small detail of their life.

The results of this research make a surprising 45 . Many of the twins were found to have the same hobbies, many have 46 the same illnesses, and some have even had the same type of accident at the same point in their lives. The most 47 similarities are to be found in the case of Jim Springer and Jim Lewis from Ohio in the USA. The story of the 'Jim Twins' made headline news across USA. Born to an immigrant woman in 1939, and adopted by different families at birth, both babies were named Jim by their new parents.

But what can be the explanation for these remarkable 48 ? Is it all pure coincidence, or is the explanation in some way genetic? Research into the lives of twins is forcing some experts to 49 that our personalities may be at least partly due to 'nature'. On the other hand, analysts are also anxious to emphasize that incredible coincidences do happen all the time, not just in the lives of twins.

Section B

Directions:Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

(A)

In a new study about the way kids learn math in elementary school, Beilock and Levine found a surprising relationship between what female teachers think and what female students learn: If a female teacher is uncomfortable with her own math skills, then her female students are more likely to believe that boys are better than girls at math.

" If these girls keep getting math-anxious female teachers in later grades, it may create a snowball effect on their math achievement," Levine told Science News. In other words, girls may end up learning math anxiety from their teachers. The study suggests that if these girls grow up believing that boys are better at math than girls are, then these girls may not do as well as they would have if they were more confident.

The researchers also gave the students tests to tell whether the students believed that a math superstar had to be a boy. Then the researchers turned to the teachers: To find out which teachers

were anxious about math, the researchers asked the teachers how they felt at times when they came across math, such as when reading a sales receipt. A teacher who got nervous looking at the numbers on a sales receipt, for example, was probably anxious about math.

Boys, on average, were unaffected by a teacher's anxiety. On average, girls with math-anxious teachers scored lower on the end-of-the-year math tests than other girls in the study did. Plus, on the test showing whether someone thought a math superstar had to be a boy, 20 girls showed feeling that boys would be better at math - and all of these girls had been taught by female teachers who had math anxiety.

According to surveys done before this one, college students who want to become elementary school teachers have the highest levels of anxiety about math. Plus, nine of every 10 elementary teachers are women, Levine said.

50. Which of the followings is NOT mentioned in the study?

A. Girls may be bad at math because of their female teachers' anxiety.

B. Most students tend to believe that a math superstar has to be a boy.

C. What kind of teacher is more likely to have math anxiety.

D. On average boys are also affected by a teacher's anxiety.

51. What can you infer from the second paragraph?

A. Girls can do as well as boys if they are confident.

B. Girls are born much weaker than many boys.

C. Boys are stronger and better in math than girls.

D. Girls who are bad at math can do other things better.

52. According to the last paragraph, Levine's attitude to the math teaching in elementary schools is _______.

A. hopeful

B. disappointed

C. worried

D. content

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a fee?

How did the Amazing Kids! Pen Pals Program begin?

The program began as a way of reaching out to the children affected by the devastating (毁灭性的) hurricanes of 2005. The program is now available to all children worldwide. We continue to welcome teachers, youth groups or agencies who like to work with hurricane survivors.

How does it work?

Amazing Kids! will match students of the same gender and age with other students who may share similar interests and hobbies, based on the information provided on the registration form.

I’ve completed all forms and made my payment. What happens next?

Someone from Amazing Kids! will contact you once a match has been found. You will be asked to call the other parent, teacher or group leader of the pen pal Amazing Kids! has selected. Scientists have developed a way to determine roughly where a person has lived by using a strand (缕) of hair, a technique that could help track the movements of criminal suspects or unidentified murder victims. The method relies on measuring how chemical variations in drinking water show up in people’s hair. “You’re what you eat and drink, and that’s recorded in your hair,” said Thure Ceiling, a geolo gist at the University of Utah. Although U.S. diet is relatively identical, water supplies vary. The differences result from weather patterns. The chemical composition of rainfall changes slightly as rain clouds move.

Most hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water are stable, but traces of both elements are also present as heavier isotopes (同位素). The heaviest rain falls first. As a result, storms that form over the Pacific deliver heavier water to California than to Utah.

Similar patterns exist throughout the U.S. By measuring the proportion of heavier hydrogen and oxygen isotopes along a strand of hair, scientists can construct a geographic timeline. Each inch of hair corresponds to about two months.

Cerling’s team collected tap water samples from 600 cities and constructed a map of the regional differences. They checked the accuracy of the map by testing 200 hair samples collected from 65 barber shops. They were able to accurately place the hair samples in broad regions roughly corresponding to the movement of rain systems.

“It’s not good for pinpointing (精确定位),” Ceding said. “It’s good for e liminating many possibilities.”Todd Park, a local detective, said the method has helped him learn more about an unidentified woman whose skeleton was found near Great Salt Lake. The woman was 5 feet tall. Police recovered 26 bones, a T-shirt and several strands of hair. When Park heard about the research, he gave the hair samples to the researchers. Chemical testing showed that over the two years before her death, she moved about every two months. She stayed in the Northwest, although the test could not be more specific than somewhere between eastern Oregon and western Wyoming.

“It’s still a substantial (巨大的) area,” Park said. “But it narrows it way down for me.”

56. According to the passage , scientists’ new discovery is that.

A. One’s hair growth has to do with the amount of water they drink.

B. A person’s hair may reveal where they hav e lived.

C. Hair analysis accurately identifies criminal suspects.

D. The chemical composition of hair varies from person to person.

57. The underlined sentence “You’re what you eat and drink” (Line 1, Para. 3) means.

A. Food and drink affect one’s personality development.

B. Food and drink preferences vary with individuals.

C. Food and drink leave traces in one’s body tissues.

D. Food and drink are indispensable to one’s existence.

58. Which of the following is true of the rainfall in America’s West?

A. There is much more rainfall in California than in Utah.

B. The water it delivers becomes lighter when it moves inland.

C. Its chemical composition is less stable than in other areas.

D. It gathers more light isotopes as it moves eastward.

59. What is the practical value of Cerling’s research?

A. It helps analyze the quality of water in different regions.

B. It helps the police determine where a crime is committed.

C. It helps the police narrow down possibilities in detective work.

D. It helps identify the drinking habits of the person under investigation

Section C

Directions:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumers’ d esire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying emphasis on environmental concerns.

Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the

environmental effect on what they buy.

This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough.

Harry Morrison, chief executive of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand this situa tion where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon emission(排放) has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.”

Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions. Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to convey clearly their message to the public will be in a better position to attract shoppers.

The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted the standard, they can use a logo in all their marketing, which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,” Mr. Morrison said.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS.)

60. According to the passage, what is likely to influence shops on what to sell?

61. A company may lose its regular customers unless ______________________.

62. According to Harry Morrison, businesses will benefit from __________________.

63. According to the last two paragraphs, companies can gain advantages by ____________.
