Luke has always been my closest and constant companion these past five years. In fact, he is very friendly to me especially when I take care of other furry friends in our shelter.

There have been a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. Luke rushed towards the forest where flames send out a

terrible heat. There’s no longer any hope at the moment to wait for Luke to come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the firemen to announce me his death in the forest. Suddenly, a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Luke succeeded in saving four cats which were trapped by the flames. Luke seized the kittens,one by one moving them to a safe place.

I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens, but Luke was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog came from the forest barking furiously. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground.

That day, I was very proud of Luke for his two heroic actions. I paid a visit to the fireman accompanied with my adorable Luke. What a memorable scene when the fireman hugged Luke tightly to his chest! “One thousand thanks, Luke, for saving my life,”the fireman said.

When it comes to health, it seems that sitting too much may be as bad for you as smoking. A study suggests that you should get an hour of exercise every day.

Researchers say the exercise can help office workers reduce the risk (风险) of an early death. Many office workers spend much time sitting. A lack of physical activity is linked to(与…有关) some 5.3 million deaths worldwide each year.

Ekelund says, "For many people there is no way to escape sitting for a long time, But we pay attention to the importance of getting exercise." Ekelund suggests going for a run in the morning, riding a bicycle to work, or taking a walk in the middle of the work day. But if this is not possible, he suggests doing at least some exercise each day to reduce the risk of disease and an early death.

For the study, researchers looked at 13 earlier studies on the effect of inactivity. People were grouped according to the amount of activity they reported--from less than 5 minutes a day to up to 75 minutes a day.

The study found that those who sat for eight hours a day but got the suggested amount of exercise reduced their chances of dying at an early age. These people did better than those who sat less but were not active.

Ekelund says,"There has been a lot of concern about the health risks." He adds,"It is possible to reduce these risks if we are active enough, even without taking up sports or going to the gym,"

Birds have been observed to sleep while in flight for the first time ever. Because of some flights that can often last several days,weeks,or even longer,some sea birds have long been thought of being able to fall fully aslee p while “on the wing”, though it was not proven.

Now researchers say they have evidence which shows birds can sleep in flight. Scientists from Max Planck Institute used a sample of 15 adult female frigatebirds(军舰鸟) to test the sleep patterns. Each bird had a small electroencephalogram(EEG脑电图) sensor fitted to record changes in the animals’ brain activity as they flew for up to 10 days and over 3,000 kilometres.

The readings showed that during flight the birds could sleep using one hemisphere of the brain, o r both together. It was known that frigatebirds could sleep with one “half” of the brain, which allows them to keep one eye open and “connected” to the awake half.

According to the research,it is sleeping technique used by birds for finding directions. “F rigatebirds sleep mostly while circling in rising air and keep the eye connected to the awake hemisphere facing the direction of flight, suggesting that they watch where they are going,” says the study.

Despite the ability to fall “fully” asleep, the birds were found to do it less in the air compared to one land. They slept “very little and less deeply while in flight. This suggests that though it is possible,falling totally asleep is not very good during flight which will need the bird’s attention.

The re searchers said the short sleep could be serving as “power naps” to keep the birds going until they return to land. Further study could help us understand why lack of sleep affects humans so badly.
