W: You're driving me crazy, Mike! All right. Let's just stay at home for two
weeks! M: No way! That sounds too boring! Can't you think of anything else?

M: I didn't see you in the history class on Friday. Where have you been?
W: I wasn't here on Friday. My geography class went on a field trip to look at some of the different rocks. In fact, we stayed there for one night.
M: Really? That sounds excellent. Where did you go?
W: A desert. It gets hot during the day, but it cools off very quickly at night. It is very dry there.
M: Well, did you enjoy the trip?
W: Of course I did. The desert is nicer than you might think. Since there are so few plants growing there, it's very easy to see different rocks. And the natural colors of the rocks shine in the sun. You should really go there to have a look.
M: I really want to go there.
W: Well, my class will organize another tour to the mountains next Saturday. Are you interested in it? M: Sure. Count me in.

W: Fred, did you go to the basketball game last night? It was really exciting, and almost everyone was there.
M: I was dying to, but I missed it. I was practicing for my piano concert and I lost track of time. I guess you went, Jenny?
W: I did, but I had to leave early. My mom asked me to get home before 9:00 so she could go to work. She didn't want to leave Anna home alone.
M: Your morn is on night shifts again? That's not easy.
W: Yes, but it's just for a month. And she's taking care of a lot of patients, so I can't really complain.
M: You'll miss the class Christmas play!
W: Well, I missed the end of the basketball game, too. Right after I left, things really heated up. I heard we
got most of our points in the last quarter.
M: Well, at least your schoolwork won't suffer. If you're home every evening, you can study and go to bed early. I will still have to balance studying and practicing.
W: It will be worth it when you have a career you love, won't it?
M: Yes. I have always dreamed of being a pianist in the city orchestra.

W: The danger of nuclear power to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation. Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can't be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may he all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can't detect them or sense them without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can't sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is harmful to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill animals or human beings outright by killing musses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed outright, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in bad ways. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
