“I give up!” Kerry cried. She threw the yellow flowers to the floor. All the anger she had felt these last few months came rushing out. “I’m not a Japanese. I’m an American. Dear Principal Jones,
I’m writing to you about an idea I recently developed after taking a rip with my family to a local botanical garden. We were impressed with the wonderful various plants and flowers. It was amazing to see the views, and we all felt that it was a very comfortable place. I had never imagined that the fact of nature could so rapidly lift up a person’s mood. Although I certainly realize that we can’t turn our school into a botanical garden entirely, we can surely add more beauty to its environment.
I know that buying plants for landscaping（绿化）is expensive, so I suggest that we try my plan. Many homes and apartments in my neighborhood have a lot of landscaping. After doing some research, I have learned that many of these plants must be divided and transplanted each year, otherwise they will become
overgrown and will bloom less. We could host a plant-exchange activity this spring. People could exchange plants from their own gardens; they could also bring some plants to donate to our school. It would be a wonderful opportunity for community members to visit our school, to meet new people, and to get some different plants to improve the look of their own yards.
We hope we will succeed in our goals: gaining a lot of plants to beautify our school. We will also be performing a service to our community. It has often advised in popular weight-loss programs that people who hope to lose extra weight should drink more water. As is often the case, the evidence behind this recommendation was not sound enough. Fortunately, a recent study suggests the recommendation may be reasonable.
In the study, researchers divided overweight or obese older men and women into two groups. The first was put on a hypocaloric（低卡路里）diet---meaning they were eating fewer calories than the energy they were using up. The other was also put on a hypocaloric diet but was told to increase the amount of the water they drank. Both followed these eating plans for over 12 weeks.
The hypocaloric diet consisted of 1,200 calories for the women and 1,500 calories for the men. Those in the group who were on a diet and were increasing their water consumption had to drink 500ml of water (two cups) 30 minutes prior to each of their three large daily meals. Both groups lost a significant amount of weight---5-8kg---after being put on the diet.
But those who also consumed more water before their meals lost an additional 2 kg in comparison to the diet-only group. This could be because those drinking more water ate fewer calories during meals---tests showed they ate about 40 fewer calories per meal.
This study provides compelling evidence to encourage all those attempting to lose weight to increase their daily intake of water. Specifically, one should consume about 2 cups of water, about half an hour prior to most meals. On an average day, a quarter of our liquid comes from our food. Almost all food has some water in it. Fruit and vegetables are the most water-laden（含水的）, with cucumbers and lettuce possessing more than 95 percent.
