For their nick-of-time acts, Toby, a 2-year-old dog, and Winnie, a cute cat, were named Dog and Cat of the Year by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

As Amy Paul choked(哽住) on a piece of apple at her home, her dog jumped up, landing hard on her chest and forcing the piece in her throat out. When the Keesling family of Indiana was about to be killed by carbon monoxide, their cat clawed at the wife Cathy’s hair until she woke up and called for help.

No one could explain their timely heroics.

Both pets were rescued by their owners in infancy---Toby as a 4-week-old thrown into a garbage bin to die, and Winnie as a week-old orphan hiding under a barn, so helpless that Cathy’s husband, Eric, had to feed her milk with an eyedropper.

As the Keeslings recalled it, a gas-driven pump being used broke down, spreading carbon monoxide through the house. By the time Winnie went to rescue, the couple’s 14-year-old son was already unconscious. “Winnie jumped on the bed and was clawing at me, with a kind of angry sound,” Cathy Keesling said. The state police responding to her 911 call said the family was only minutes from death, judging by the amount of poisonous gas in the house.

Amy Paul’s husband was at his job when she took a midday break from making jewelry a nd bit into an apple. “Normally I peel them, but I read in Good Housekeeping Magazine that the skin has all the nutrients, so I ate the skin, and that’s what caused me to choke,” she recalled. “I couldn’t breathe and I was in panic when Toby jumped on me. He never does that, but he did, and saved my life.”

Both Toby and Winnie accompanied their owners to the awards luncheon.

56.Why did Amy Paul choke on a piece of apple?

A. She was too young to care for herself.

B. She had a big bite.

C. The apple was too hard.

D. She didn’t peel the skin as usual. 57.Winnie saved the lives of its owner’s whole family in an accident by __________.

D. making some strange noises

58.Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined word “infancy” in Paragraph 4?

B. youth

C. babyhood

D. agedness

59.What caused the carbon monoxide spreading through the house?

A. A pump breaking down.

B. A driver breaking into the house.

C. The burning gas.

D. The poisonous gas.

60.What would be the suitable title for the passage?

A. So Smart Animals Are

B. Dog and Cat Honored for Saving Their Masters

C. Unforgettable Experiences

D. Great Honors for Cat and Dog

The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard(1850~1928). After immigrating from England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City”,almost certainly the source of Howard’s name for his later building plan of towns. Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs.

The nineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条) and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard’s idea was to combine the best of town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city. Howard’s idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside, far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.

Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit---Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, they would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.

61. What could be the best title for the passage?

A. City and Countryside

B. A New City in Chicago

C. The Invention of the Garden City

D. A Famous Garden City in England

62. How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden cities?

63. According to Howard, garden cities should be built _______.

“When I grow up, I want to be...”

Almost all of us have thought about, or been asked to think about, our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly. Even now your aspirations may have changed from when you were in primary school.

However, it seems career options aren’t only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the UK in May 2011 by job website monster. https://www.360docs.net/doc/a16610243.html,, in which medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.

Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions. Their prestige (威望) may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are some of the most esteemed members of society, and they make good money. Joining these high-profile professions is often seen as a sign of upward social mobility.

It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career. British young men list the UK tycoon Alan Sugar, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”. Just as Chinese teenagers see bei ng a banker as a good and fun pathway to “wealth”.

However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer, or banker. They are those who see fulfillment and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career o ptions. As the Teens’ survey discovered, a variety of unconventional jobs---coffee shop owner, gourmet(美食家),waiter at a fast food restaurant---are among teenagers’ career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs.

With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training, you have to learn to balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.

66. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Careers in teenagers’ mind.

B. Choosing a good job is very important.

C. Teenagers in the UK like doctors.

D. The choice of career needs challenge.

67. What is the top career choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17 according to

the article?

A. Medicine

B. Law

C. Bank

D. Education

68. According to the article, all of the following are the benefits of being a doctor

except_______.

A. respect from others

B. the oldest profession

C. high pay

D. upward social mobility.

69. What do youngsters think is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career?

A. Prestige

B. Fulfillment

C. Happiness

D. Wealth

70. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. According to your particular talents and skills, you can choose your favorite career.

B. Specific education and training can help get a good job.

C. Whatever career you choose, you should balance optimism and confidence with being

realistic about your particular talents and skills.

D. Responsibility is the most important when you choose a good job.

D

Why are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods? One reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation in your body.

Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes (酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs.

Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism (新陈代谢) that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls and block the passage of vital o xygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity.

The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion increasingly inefficient. When that happens, even healthy foods can become acidic and the food allergies will become more common.

To stop this vicious(恶性的)circle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will neutralize (使…中和) the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of ra w and whole foods can help. It’s also important to restore your enzyme balance. You need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If you truly want to change and help your body heal itself, you need to take an active approach.

71. What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. To advocate eating more raw and whole foods.

B. To tell the differences between raw and processed foods.

C. To inform people of the harm of processed foods.

D. To warn people of the problem of obesity.

72. It can be inferred from Para. 2 that __________.

A. it is essential for people to protect their vital organs

B. foods with natural enzymes help people keep fit

C. we’d better be cautious about raw and whole food s

D. giving up cooked and refined foods is a new lifestyle

73. Processed foods are unhealthy because they __________.

A. destroy body’s cells

B. are difficult to digest

C. may lead to obesity

D. stop body’s metabolism

74. What is likely to be talked about following the last paragraph?

A. Active approaches to avoid acid.

B. Different causes of acid accumulation.

C. Correct ways to cook raw foods.

D. Suitable types of raw and whole foods.

75. What can we learn from the text?

A. Processed foods are good for our appetite mechanism.

【1】The air was pleasant and the music was loud in the vast square in front of the New York State office building in Harlem(哈莱姆,美国纽约市黑人居住区) as health advocates(支持者,提倡者)set up information tables for Harlem wellness Week. It was a wide-ranging effort to educate people about non-communicable diseases: Heart disease, cancer, lung disease, obesity, and so on.

【2】There is an economic effect caused by these diseases, especially in Harlem, one of the city’s poorest districts. Without healthy employees and healthy customers, you cannot have healthy business, says Patricia Ricketts of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors Wellness Week.

【3】Dr. Jo Ivy Boufford is president of the New York Academy of Medicine, a Wellness Week partner. She says education about better nutrition is important, but that people with low incomes often lack the means to put what they know into practice. But there is hope. That is a fantastic example of what can be done, without having any impact on the economy. It is a city where you have bike paths. That is a good message for the world, because bikes make your transport active. That is good for your health and lowers air pollution,” she said.

【4】“It is not enough to focus on the management of disease through medication,” Dr. Boufford says. “That’s why health advocates will be trying to persuade UN officials during Welln ess Week to pass resolutions that deal with road and transport design and construction and other potential causes of non-communicable diseases.”

One possible version:

Dear Principal:

These days all my classmates are talking about employing foreign teachers.

Some students think it’s necessary to have foreign teachers because it can provide us with a better opportunity to learn English. We can practice spoken English with native speakers and improve our language abilities. Moreover, it can make us more interested in the English language. We can learn more about some foreign customs and culture.

On the contrary, some other students are strongly against the idea. They think the most important thing for them is to be admitted into universities. However, having a foreign teacher seems to be no good to improve the academic achievements. And it may cause some trouble while communicating with them as there is culture diversity. What is worse, it costs a lot of money to employ foreign teachers.

Anyway you are Principal. It’s up to you to decide whether to employ foreign teachers or not. We believe you will make a wise decision.

Best wishes.

(2)当电子枪射出的电子动能E k=50.0 eV时,改变电压U(V),测出电流I(A),得出下图所示的I—U图线,图线表明,当电压U为5.00 V、2.88 V、2.72 V、2.64 V时,电流出现峰值,定性分析论述I—U图线的物理意义.
