（四）An Eyewitness Account of a Traffic Accident My name is Tom. I am studying at a college. A week ago I saw a traffic accident, which is still vivid in my mind.

It was at about 9:00 on Sunday morning, June 15, when I was going out of the university to visit a friend of mine at another university. I was walking leisurely on the sidewalk when I heard a loud crash. Two vehicles collided into each other just at the T-junction about 10 meters away. It was a traffic accident.

I went up right away and found that the two taxies were badly damaged. Both roofs were out of shape. One door of a car was knocked off and lying on the road. One driver was bleeding and another was shut in the taxi. Some people were trying to help the driver get out of the damaged car. One man was calling to the traffic policeman station. A lot of cars were jammed on the road.

From the stopping tack on the road, it is clear that the two taxis were driving too fast. But it is just one of the reasons. In my opinion, the taxi drivers are eager to take more passengers and make a little money. On the other hand, both drivers don’t show any concern for each other. Both of them wanted to run in front of the other. Therefore, the accident is inevitable. So far, we should ask

the drivers to keep it in their mind that a little slower, a little safter. Taking care of other’s lives means taking care of your life.

What is Honesty? Honesty means speaking the truth and being fair and upright in act. Considered a virtue, it is admired in every country and every culture. He who lies and cheats is dishonest. Dishonest is generally looked upon as an evil, and is despised and condemned by everyone.

However, there are people who try to get benefit by dishonest means. For example, some students copy the exercise done by others or cheat on examination, in order to get good marks. As the English proverb goes, honest is the best policy. For one thing, if you want to be trusted and respected by your friends, you must be honest. With computers becoming more and more easily accessible on the campus, college students are spending more time than ever doing their routine tasks electronically in the last decade. In 1990, for example, the average number of hours a student spent on the computer per week was less than 2 hours. Up to 2000, however, time spent on the computer increased suddenly to almost 20 hours a week.

Many reasons account for this growing trend. Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?

A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of College English Test(CET). We have all taken various English tests, but so far most of them are written ones. Have you and is it necessary to go to all the trouble to hold or take such a test? People differ in their answers.

Many people will think it necessary to take a test of spoken English. They know that although they have taken dozens, even hundreds, of English tests ever since they started learning it and many even have got surprisingly high marks, few of them can express themselves freely in spoken English. And if people can’t speak a word of it, what’s the sense of learning it and what do those high marks mea n? They’re none but deaf-and-mutes before the native speakers. In most colleges and universities the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject. Although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous.

To begin with, examinations lower the standards of teaching. Since teachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. 大学英语四级考试改革已进行了一年多，正式考试也已经进行了两次。从大学考试委员会颁布的样卷和两次改革后的考试试卷，我们可以总结出今后大学英语复习的方向，为考生提出一些指导性意见。

首先是作文：

从2000年以后我们从作文的题型和体裁上可以看出，考应用文的比例逐渐增强，大有替代议论文的趋势。但这并不说明议论文将淡出四六级考试。2006年1月在经过多年沉寂之后，又出现了一次关于“大学校园是否应向旅游者开放”的议论文就说明了这一点，6月24日的第一次新四级作文，“大学生自由选择任课教师”，12月23日“春晚是否应取消”则又给了我们一个强烈的暗示，即大纲上要求的提纲作文（议论文、说明文）、情景作文（记叙文、应用文）和图表作文等作文类型依然在考试的范围之内，基于此，可以说新旧四级在本质上并没有区别。

如果说改革前后的写作有什么差别的话，那么最明显的差别是：

1）写作被安排在了四六级考试的第一部分，很多同学认为这只是一个顺序的问题，其实它还包含有更深层次的暗示，那就是语言的应用被放在了考试的重要位置。主观题取代客观题被放在了考试的第一位。我们在以往的四级辅导中，往往都强调在写作文中我们除了平时的训练之外，在考场上较之其他部分还有另一个优势，那就是，我们接受了大量的语料（特别是四篇阅读和完型填空），我们可以临场将这些语料的好词、好句式记录下来，用于自己的作文之中。而新题型中作文在第一部分，这种优势则不复存在。

2）我们从6月24日的作文题目中看到，与以往的议论文相比，模版的作用将越来越弱，以本次作文为例，如果按照模版，三段的基本写作要求应该是“现象、原因、结论”型：

a）现象：有些大学允许学生自由选择某些课程的任课教师。

b）原因：学生选择教师时所考虑的主要因素…...

c）结论：…….

而本次作文的结论部分却是“正反观点”类中的第二项：

a）现象

b）正反观点

c）你的观点

即：“学生自选任课教师的益处和可能产生的问题”。第三段要求考生论述的是优缺点，而这正是论述“every coin has two sides”类论说文的要点。由此我们看到，各类的模版开始进行融合，而且越来越灵活，不按套路出牌了。

对于改革后的四六级作文，我们一方面要看到四六级改革前后题型的延续性，即过去我们在辅导中的写作技巧依然有效，另一方面应在以下方面完善自己的作文：

1）重视大纲中列举的写作类型与体裁，做到各种所谓“模版”的拆分与重新组合（参见2005年12月旧题型与2006年6月新题型的作文题材与类型）

2）注意平时积累在阅读中积累的重要四六级词汇与句式，不是简单、机械地背诵，而是在设定的各种情景和环境，进行灵活多样的组合，成为自己的句子，在多读多写的过程中，使自己的行文水到渠成，彻底改变让阅卷员感觉是在“背诵文章”而不是在“写文章”的印象。

3）必须克服羞怯心理，敢于将自己的习作拿给老师进行修改和点评，自己写过百篇而无“高手”指导，等于在同一地点“努力”地进行大踏步运动，费力而没有进步。老师的点评，往往为考生指出问题之所在，起到“教师一席话，胜写百篇文”的作用。

最后，我们一定要遵循写作的练习过程，即“阅读范文—模仿写作—教师反馈—改进提高”的步骤，经过一段时间的努力，在练习20篇左右的文章后，就基本能够把四六级作文的要点、写作类型和“闪光词句”成竹于胸了。

新四级重要的改革内容除了听力加大比例之外，阅读也是改革的重要部分。如果说2005年的新样卷给我们提供了题型指导，那么2006年6月24日的阅读，则给我们第一次提供了新阅读的真实预料。仔细分析其特点是今后准备四级阅读的宝贵材料。

我们把新旧阅读在分值、篇章数量和时间等变量进行了一些统计，以期通过数据分析，使大家对二者有个直观的认识，因而对新四级有一个更深的了解。

从表中我们看到，在篇章数量、时间、阅读速度和分数比例方面，新旧阅读并没有重大差异，真正给我们启示的是在考题类型和词汇总量两个方面。由此我们可以得出结论，较之旧题型全部采用的客观题形式，改革后的四六级阅读考题形式将更加灵活多样，要求考生语言应用能力更强，仅以过去的阅读理解技巧显然已经无法满足新阅读的要求了。

那么，以下我们就以6月24日阅读真题为蓝本，分析在今后准备阅读考试复习中，如何更加具有针对性。

1）新的题型要求我们具有新的解题思路

快速阅读关于美国公路的篇章，总词汇量为836，时间为15分钟，按照“读原文--做题时间比例1：1”原则，原文的阅读速度应为每分钟110词左右，远远高于旧四级的速度要求。

学会在阅读中分析长难句式，通过篇章的主题、段与段、段与句和句与句之间的句法和逻辑关系，准确理解词汇在句中获句子在段落、篇章中所起的作用。这也正是快速阅读和选词填空所要求我们应用的阅读技能。

例如我们刚才提到的选词填空的51题，原文是这样的：

我们解题的思路是“先结构，后逻辑”：首先，我们要理解该句是由while 引导的表示转折的主从复合句，世界的一些地区是大量降雨和洪水，而另一些地区面临干旱（我们即时不认识drought，也可通过该句的句法关系推断出它应该是heavy rain和flood的反义词），其次，通过逻辑关系我们的判断是干旱、歉收导致的结果是—饥饿。

4）传统阅读技巧依然重要

我们在传统四六级考试中积累的阅读经验与技巧（客观题多项选择的解题方法）仍然在新阅读中发挥作用，因为我们仍有两篇阅读属于这类题型，而且，阅读的技巧与方法都是相通的，不是互相孤立的。

新四级阅读的出现，为四级考试注入了新的生命，也使四级考试的测试方法更加灵活多样，涉及的语言应用能力更多。所以，我们应该在平时多进行语言实践，把能力放在第一位，那么将更有主动权，而不会在乎考试题型的变化。毕竟我们将来还要面临研究生英语考试等其他英语考试，题型肯定都不相同。因此语言的应用能力是关键，考试只是检验语言技能的手段之一，带着这种心态学语言才是真正了解了语言学习的真谛和考试的目的。
