Food festivals are a common occurrence in the UK and take place in all sorts of places and at all sorts of times. Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match — no matter how specialized.

Meatopia

This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of meat products, from burgers to steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery shows, and attend informal meat-based workshops.

The Ginger(姜) and Spice Festival

Th e Ginger and Spice Festival, held in Market Drayton, celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of spices from mild to hot.

The National Honey Show

It started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind. This three-day event attracts over 2000 participants to their traditional competition, and offers lectures and workshops on beekeeping and, of course, that syrupy golden honey.

While people’s tastes are different from each other, the UK has something to offer most people. Losing a wallet is one of those careless acts most of us have come across, at some point or the other in our lives. While most of us tend to move on after mourning over the lost necessities, there are a few lucky ones who get them back, with the help of the police or the generosity of the person who finds it.

And then there is Hunter Shamatt, who not only got back his wallet but with some added happiness that was tagged along!

Hunter was on his way to attend his sister’s wedding on a Las Vegas-bound flight(飞往拉斯维加斯的航班) when he realized that he has misplaced his wallet, sometime during the

Surprisingly, the wallet was not the only thing that was inside the package. It also had a handwritten note for Hunter which turned out to be a bonus! The piece of paper read,

P.S. I rounded your cash up to an even $100, so you could celebrate getting your wallet back. HAVE FUN!!!”

Moved by the touching gesture, Hunter’s mom, Jeannie Shamatt, decided to write a post on Facebook giving a detailed description of the incident. She also urged everyone to share the post as she would like to meet and greet the person behind the act of kindness, personally.

Now, thanks to the astonishing power of social media, the post finally reached the man behind the note. The man was identified as Todd Brown and it was one of his co-workers who made sure Jeannie Shamatt’s post reaches his colleague. Jeannie turned to Facebook again to thank Brown and his family for restoring her faith in humanity.

“I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can regardless of the outcome. This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything. China plans to launch 156 small satellites by 2025 to provide Internet services in low signal areas and places with adverse(不利的) natural environment, according to China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation(CASIC).

Due to en vironmental conditions of deserts, mountains and seas, half of the world’s population has no access to the Internet, and the information deficiency hampers local development.

It will be China’s first broadband Internet access system with small satellites hovering in low orbit(轨道), which will also help meet the needs of commercial space development.

The project, named Hongyun, plans to send the first satellite by 2019, and launch four more by 2020. By the end of 2025, CASIC plans to have all of the 156 satellites in operation.

The Hongyun Project, which focuses on communication, remote sensing and navigation, can offer communication and Internet services for China and less-developed 3 countries with reduced latency. Meanwhile, the project can also benefit emergency communication, sensor data collection and remote control of unmanned equipment.

Currently, international maritime satellites are widely used in communications in mountainous areas and airplanes, but those satellites, 36, 000 kilometers above the Earth, have time and signal delay as well as high cost for providing services.

The small satellites sent by the Hongyun Project will hover in low orbits only hundreds of kilometers to 1,000 kilometers above the Earth, and thus could improve the Internet access. However, the low orbit satellites may face challenges in power supply, as they need more energy to reduce the influence of air-resistance compared to high orbit satellites. Experiments are needed to determine whether solar energy alone is enough.

28. According to the passage, ________________.

A. 156 satellites will be launched by the Hongyun Project by 2020

B. international maritime satellites can cause signal delay

C. The Hongyun Project may not encourage commercial space development

D. low orbit satellites are currently used widely in communications in mountainous areas

29. The underlined word “hampers” in Paragraph2 probably refers to ________.

A. accelerates

B. determines

C. prevents

D. promotes

30. Which of the following is not included in the Hongyun Project?

A. Communication and Navigation.

B. Remote sensing.

C. Data collection.

D. Solar energy.

31. Low orbit satellites need more energy in order to________.

A. provide more accurate data

B. improve the Internet access

C. reduce the effect of air-resistance

D. face more challenges

D

I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people kept asking me stories about what it’s like to work in a field under the control of men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the existence of the universe, the shape of space time and the nature of black holes.

At 19, when I began studying astrophysics(天体物理学), it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the problem started to bother me. My every achievement — jobs, research papers, awards — was viewed from the angle of gender(性别) politics. So were my failures.

Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would finally become my reply to any and all provocations(挑衅): I don’t talk about that any more. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize th at I didn’t want to deal with gender problems. Why should removing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don’t study sociology or political theory.

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don’t take no notice of those concerns. Still, I don’t tell them “war” stories. Instead, I have given them this: the scene of their physics professor heavily pregnant(怀孕) doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 wome n driven by a love of science. And that’s

a sight worth talking about.

32. Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A. She feels unhappy working in the scientific field.

B. She finds space research more important.

C. She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

D. She is tired of the sexism in scientific field.

33. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would think the author’s failures were due to ________.

A. her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist

B. her involvement in gender politics

C. the very fact that she is a woman

D. the burden she bears in a male-leading society

34. Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?

A. Female students no longer have to bother about gender issues.

B. Her students’ performance has brought back her confidence.

C. More female students are going in for science than before.

D. Her female students can do just as well as male students.

35. What does the image(形象) that the author presents to her students suggest?

A. Women can balance a career in science and having a family.

B. Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.

C. Women students needn’t have the concerns of her gen eration.

D. Women now have fewer problems going in for a science career.

Theme park getaways(假日休闲地) are popular with families, but they sure aren’t cheap. Happily, there are some golden rules of ticket-buying that apply to pretty much every theme park, and they can help you chip away at the cost of tickets. 36.

●Buy tickets online.

Never ever pay the walk-up ticket price at a theme park. 37. You’re guaranteed to save a significant sum —sometimes as much as $20 per ticket —even for same-day tickets.

●Buy in advance.

38. For instance, Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, slices off $25 per ticket when you make your purchase at least three days ahead.

● 39.

This one is a universal no-brainer. Single-day ticket prices at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, are about 30 percent less than admission on Saturdays and Sundays. But the big bonus is that lines will be much shorter, allowing you to spend less time waiting in lines and more time having fun.

●Go in the afternoon.

40. For example, Hersheypark’s sunset tickets allow entry after 4 pm or 5 pm, depending on the day. You’ll still get between four to six hours of fun before the park closes, and you’ll pay up to 50 percent less than the full-day ticket price.

A. Avoid weekends.

B. Buy more tickets than you need.

C. Here are some ways to lower your theme park spending.

D. At larger parks, you’ll save money when you buy a package.

E. Instead, visit the theme park website and print out your tickets before you go.

F. Some parks offer deeply discounted tickets for visitors arriving later in the day.

G. Most theme parks offer a price cut if you buy tickets at least a few days before you arrive.

Dear Tom,

I’m worried to know that you often eat fast food for lunch these days. I don’t think it’s a wise choice. Though fast food is con venient and delicious in taste, even becomes more and more popular in China, I still believe it can’t provide us with adequate nutrition. To teenagers, it is usually not a balanced diet and low in cleanliness. To keep healthy and get enough energy from lunch, you’d better take some home-cooking for lunch or buy some fresh food from the school canteen. I don’t mean fast food should be refused in your life, but just choose it when you are really in a hurry, or it will surely take some side effects to you.

I hope you can take my advice seriously and enjoy all kinds of delicious and healthy Chinese food.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Li Jin

(only+状语从句) ________________________________________________________________________ 2. (what引导的名词性从句) ________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 1. Only when we have mastered the different body languages can we communicate well with them. 2. This is what our life will be like in the future. Only when we have mastered the different body languages can we communicate well with them。 2. This is what our life will be like in the future. 2. Directions:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets. 1. (leave) _________________ 2. (with) _________________ 3. (the way) _________________ 4. (Only) _________________ 【答案】 1.For the sake of safety/ For safety, children / a child should not be left alone at home 2.Having taken a deep breath, he went up to the stage with a smile on his face.
