The news that all teachers were expected to attend camp with their students left me feeling unsettled. For the first time in more than 20 years, I would need to spend three days in the early autumn bush with 120 14-year-olds.

I love spending time with teenagers. But I teach Grade 12 English and am 51 years old. There is a difference between a literary seminar on King Lear, no matter how lively it may be, and late-night party in a campground. Besides, my idea of “outdoors” is biking on the Ottawa bike paths or sitting in the backyard with a cup of tea and a good book.

Eventually, we turn down a long dirt track that dives deep into a forest. I read the schedule and note the impressive minute-by-minute detail for the next 72 hours. I’ve never faced such a structured(高度组织化的) time since, well, when I went to camp in Grade 9. I think of home.

The next morning, I arise early. It is 7 a.m. Time for the polar bear dip. Everyone asks if I am going to swim. Genealogy, or researching your family tree, is a hobby that can rapidly develop into an obsession. Before you start looking for your own ancestors, read this advice from genealogist Maria McLeod.

The first question to ask yourself is why you want to research your family tree.

Genealogy is not about discovering that you are the lost prince or princess of an unknown kingdom. It’s about finding more about yourself. For most people the impor tant question is “Why am I like I am?” You might not look like other members of your immediate family and you want to know where your green eyes or curly hair come from. Now the reason cooking has become so popular, especially among men, is that the kitchen is the new workshop. 重庆市第122中学是一所教学质量优秀的城郊普通初中,是国家级首批基础教育课程改革实验学校,从2001年至今,已走过7年的课改历程。我校有一大批青年教师在课改中不断摔打磨练,并迅速成长起来。新课程改革的根本出发点是为了一切学生,而改革的主要落脚点是在课堂。课堂是教师发展、学生成长的主阵地,更是提高学校教学质量的核心所在,甚至有的专家们提出了“改革最终发生在课堂上”的观点。回顾7年走过的路程,我们深刻地意识到,只有带着反思上路,不断加强课堂教学改革,才能真正落实课改理念。 冷静反思,发现问题 2001年,我校成为全国首批基础教育课程改革实验学校。新的课改理念让教师们激情澎湃,兴奋不已,以饱满的热情投入到课改工作之中,将课改理念转化为具体的教学行为。在课改初期,教师对课改理念吃得不透,对新课改理念的认识存在不足,这使我们很快意识到:我们的课堂还没有真正体现课改理念,对课改理念的认识还存在一定的偏差。为此,我们很快从浮躁与狂热中沉静下来,开始深刻反思:我们的课堂教学是否真正体现了课改理念?课堂教学究竟存在哪些问题?我们应如何立足课堂,彰显课堂魅力?从而让教师的专业素养不断变得深厚,让学生的后续学习能力得到更大的发展,让学校的办学水平更上一层楼。 为了找出问题,我们一头扎进课堂,深入调研。通过调研,我们发现:我们的课堂教学中尚存在诸多问题,有的甚至是严重的问题。 问题1.舍本逐末,过分追求课堂形式 (1) 满堂问取代满堂灌。 追问:提出的问题是否有价值?提得合适吗?有没有梯度和系统?是否有思维含量? (2)课件+表演+讨论=自主合作学习 个别教师片面理解“自主、探究与合作学习”,一节课大部分的时间都用来进行漫无边际的讨论或安排学生表演。讨论中,课堂上常常有三分之一的学生“混于其中,乐得清闲”,他们多半是在谈论与课堂无关的话题;表演时,课堂上绝大多数学生是表演者的“忠实“观众,思维未参与其中;课件展示,画面美轮美奂,学生一晃而过,心中未留下多少痕迹。这些教学,导致课堂上该凸显的教学重点未凸显出来,改突破的教学难点并未得到突破,学生该过手的知识并未过手。这样的课堂缺乏实质性的师生互动、生生互动、生本互动;缺乏有价值的知识的生成。并未充分发挥出自主、合作、探究学习方式的作用。 这类课程不但大大降低了课堂教学效率,而且还助长了学生对问题不作深入探究、不愿仔细倾听的恶习。长此下去,势必形成学生在学习上浅尝辄止的浮躁个性。这样的课堂培养出来的学生虽然有勇于表现,口头表达能力强的优点,却缺乏扎实钻研,专注于问题独立思考的良好品质。 追问:单纯的课堂热闹就是自主合作探究学习吗?内容与形式,孰轻孰重?该如何真正让学生的思维动起来?
