When does a teenager become an adult(成人)? In many countries, it happens on your 18th birthday, but in some parts of the world, you have to do something special to enter the world of adults. On the island of Papua New Guinea, the Niowra people live near the Sepik River, which is full of crocodiles(鳄鱼). The people believe the crocodiles made the earth and its people. When it is time for teenage boys to become men, “a crocodile ceremony(仪式)” takes place.

The boys are taken to a small house called the“Crocodile Nest”. The house is full of crocodile teeth. The boys are told to think of their crocodile “fathers and mothers.” This helps them to be strong and brave during the ceremony. They stay in the house for six weeks. As part of the ceremony, bamboo is used to make small cuts on their backs. The Niowra say if the boys think of their crocodile mothers and fathers, they don’t feel pain. The boys also play drums during their time in the house to take their minds off the pain.

No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn to how to improve their memory. Here are some ways. None of them can make your memory 100% perfect, but all of them are helpful:

●When you want to remember something, tell a friend about it. This way the new information becomes more memorable. Later on, think about the conversation with your friend. It will remind(提醒) you of the main information you wanted to remember.

●Our memory works well when we are asleep. If you want to remember something, go to bed and go to sleep immediately after learning it.

●If you have to remember something big, break it down into smaller pieces. It’s easier to remember 198756430387 if you break it into four smaller pieces 198-756-430-387.

●If you want to remember a piece of information, and you can’t, don’t get angry. Relax and tell yourself, “If it’s important, I will remember it later.”

●One of the best ways of remembering is to “make pictures” on the“movie screen” of your mind, and it’s fun, too. Scientists say that our brain works a lot in pictures. So sometimes, if we want to remember new information, it helps to make a picture story. Imagine someone wants to go shopping for the following things:

Now make a crazy story: Once upon a time. There was a girl. She was hungry and looking for FOOD. Her name was on her T-shirt in big golden letters: GOLDIE FISH. She put on her ROLLER SKA TES and tried to leave the house, but she tripped(绊倒) over her VOCABULARY BOOK and fell on a BOTTLE OF SHAMPOO. The shampoo was everywhere: on the floor, on the chair…

Let yourself be surprised by your memory.

Survival training course—Day 1

Our first day was not easy—there was so much to do! Arriving on the island, the instructor, Mr Wang, gave us a tent, some food, a map, etc. and asked us to take them all to the top of a hill on mountain bikes. It was quite hard, but we all managed to get there before lunch. After a short rest and a quick sandwich, we tried to find a good place to put up the tent. Standing at the top of the cliff(悬崖), Jenny suggested camping there. However, Mr Wang pointed out that the strong wind might blow the tent away. In the end, we found a nice place that protected ourselves from the wind.

Putting up the tent was very hard. It was only after two hours that it was finally done. By that time, we were all hungry. So we had to make a fire to cook our food. After dinner, we were all full and happy.

Survival training course—Day 2

We woke up early today and made breakfast quickly as we had to get on well with the next part of our training. Today’s task was to work out how to get to a secret place using a map and a compass.

Following the instructions Mr Wang had given us, we made our way across the island, mountain biking and even boating to the last checkpoint. It was such an exciting trip—we needed to go caving(洞穴) and rock climbing at different signposts which showed us directions and

distances. When we finally reached the place, we were tired. Expected to be the last ones there, we

In order to tell what I believe, I must bring up something from my personal history.

The turning point of my life was my decision to give up my business job and study music. My parents, although sharing my love of music, didn’t think it was a good choice I took up music as a job. Considering my family background, this was understandable. My grandfather had taught music for forty years at Springhill College in Mobile, and though he was much loved by his students, he didn’t earn(挣钱) enough to provide for his large family. As a result of this example in the family, my parents strongly asked me to the college instead of a conservatory(音乐学院) of music although I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time practicing.

Before my graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some money problems and I felt it was my duty to leave college and take a job. That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years.I went into it for money, for being able to help the family. Money is all I got out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by.

My wish was to save enough to quit(退出)and then go to Europe to study music. I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, earned enough to make me able to go abroad. The family got out of the trouble and ____________. I felt like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed for four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working and enjoyed every minute of it.

“Enjoyed” is too soft a word. I walked on air. I really lived. When I broke away form business, it was against the advice of all my friends and family, but if I had stayed in business, I do not believe I would have made a success of living.

1. The writer presented his grandpa’s example in order to ______.

A. show how much his grandpa was loved by his students

B. tell to be a musician wasn’t a good choice for the writer

C. explain why his parents disagreed him to take up music as a job

D. thank his parents’ support for studying in the conservatory of music

2. How did the writer feel when he was taking his business job?
