Everybody hates it, but everybody does it. A recent report said that 40%of Americans hate tipping. In America alone, tipping is a $ 16 billion-a-year industry. Consumers acting politely ought not to pay more than they have to for a given service. Tips should not exist. So why do they? The common opinion in the past was that tips both rewarded the efforts of good service and reduced uncomfortable feelings of inequality. And also, tipping makes for closer relations. It went without saying that the better the service, the bigger the tip.

But according to a new research from Cornell University, tips no longer serve any useful function. The paper analyzes numbers they got from 2,547 groups dining at 20 different restaurants. The connection between larger tips and better service was very weak. Only a tiny part of the size of the tip had anything to do with the quality of service.

Tipping is better explained, by culture than by the money people spend. In America, the custom came into being a long time ago. It is regarded as part of the accepted cost of a service. In New York restaurants, failing to tip at least 15% could well mean dissatisfaction from the customers. Hairdressers can expect to get l5%-20%, and the man who delivers your fast food $ 2. In Europe, tipping is less common. In many restaurants the amount of tip is decided by a standard service charge. In many Asian countries, tipping has never really caught on at all. Only a few have really taken to tipping. According to Michael Lynn, the Cornell papers’ author, countries in which people are more social or outgoing tend to tip more. Tipping may reduce anxiety about being served by strangers. And Mr. Lynn says, “In America, where people are expressive and eager to mix up with others, tipping is about social approval. If you tip badly, people think less of you. Tipping well is a chance to show off.”

24.This passage is mainly about .

A.different kinds of tipping in different countries

B.the relationship between tipping and custom

C.the origin and present meaning of tipping

D.most American people hate tipping

25.Which of the following best explains the underlined phrase “caught on”? A.become popular. B.been hated. C.been stopped. D.been permitted

26.Among the following situations, in your opinion, who is likely to tip most?

A.A Frenchman just quarreled with the barber who did his hair badly in New York. B.An American just had a wonderful dinner in a well known restaurant in New York. C.A Japanese businessman asked for a pizza delivery from a Pizza Hut in New York. D.A Chinese student enjoyed his meal in a famous fast food restaurant in New York. 27.We can infer from this passage that .

A.tipping is no longer a good way to satisfy some customers themselves

B.tipping is especially popular in New York

C.tipping in America can make service better now

D.tipping has something to do with people’s character

During Rick’s birth in 1962, his brain was damaged for oxyge n lack. The doctors told Dick Hoyt that there was no hope of his son being anything more than a “vegetable”. Yet Dick and his wife were determined to raise him at home.

At age 13, Rick told his father he wanted to participate in a five-mile benefit run for the disabled. Dick was not a runner, but he agreed to push Rick through the race course in his wheelchair. That was when a surprising thing happened. During the run, Rick felt as though he wasn’t disabled anymore—he was simply one of the runners. This experience deeply affected Dick, and he committed to running an increasing number of events with his son so that Rick could have this feeling as often as possible.

At first, other competitors often treated them as outsiders and even avoided them. But gradually, what began as a way for Rick Hoyt to experience inclusion and equality broadened in its purpose. Running together became a way to send a message that, as Rick said, everybody should be included in everyday life. The pair’s first Boston Marathon in 1981 finished in the top quarter of the field, and shortly thereafter, attitudes began to change. Many athletes would come up to them before the race to wish them luck.

The 2013 Boston Marathon was the 31st time the Hoyts had run the race, and it was also their last race. Dick has run thousands of miles to be with and support his son. Their athletic pursuits have enriched Rick’s life and had a practical benefit for Dick’s life as well: After a heart attack, Dick’s doctors told him he might have died 15 years ear lier if he weren’t in such good shape.

28.What inspired Dick to keep running?

A.Rick felt he was a healthy person in running.

B.Rick could raise money by taking part in running.

C.Rick’s wish was to be an excellent runner one day.

D.Rick could rebuild his brain by running.

29.What message did the Hoyts send by running?

A.Everyone is a part of the world. B.Whatever man has done, I may do.

C.Where there is a will, there is a way. D.Good things come to those who wait.

30.What changed others’ attitudes to the H oyts?

A.Their talent for running. B.Their purpose of running.

C.Their donations to runners. D.Their achievement in running.

31.How long did the Hoyts insist on races?

A.31 years. B.38 years.

C.40 years. D.53 years.

"When I was 16 years old, I was diving in Greece, but I was disappointed because I saw more plastic bags than fish.” These are the words of Boyan Slat, an engineer who designed the world's first ocean plastic cleanup system.

Every year, more than 8 million tons of plastics end up in our oceans, according to the UN Environment Programme. It is predicted that the weight of ocean plastics will match the weight of all the fish in our oceans by 2050. To prevent this from happening, in 2013

Slat created the Ocean Cleanup, an environmenta l non?governmental organization, and put his plan for an ocean cleanup device into action.

After years of research and develop?ment in the Netherlands, a device called System 001/B successfully started gathering plastics on October 2, 2019. The device uses a 600-meter-long C-shaped tube to gather all the floating rubbish. Unlike other cleanup methods, the system floats freely according to the direction of the waves, which allows waste to flow into and stay within the device. A sea anchor is attached to either end. This slows down the system as it floats through the water and allows the faster-moving rubbish, carried by the waves, to flow into its mouth. System 001/B can also collect waste below the surface using a 3-meter-deep skirt(挡板)attached to the end. After being gathered, the trash will be dragged back to shore by boat and recycled.

Right now, the system operates in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area that is 3 times the size of France. Once operational, the Ocean Cleanup expects a full fleet to be able to clear 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years.

"It remains to be seen whether this dream will become a reality, but it is undeniable that humanity must work together to reduce our plastic use and repair the damage our waste has caused," Slat said. "We are starting to see a young generation that gets it and is excited about a sustainable (可持续的)future, but the question still comes down to: Are we going fast enough, and how much damage will have been done before we get there?"

32.The underli ned word “match” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”. A.compare B.equal C.measure D.cover

33.Why did Boyan Slat create the Ocean Cleanup?

A.To collect ocean plastic waste.

B.To help to invent System 001/B.

C.To protect the living environment of fish.

D.To do research on the ocean environment.

34.What can we know about System 001/B?

A.It can collect and recycle garbage at the same time.

B.It can only gather ocean waste which floats on the water.

C.It aims to clear up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years.

D.It is an ocean-cleaning device which has already been put to use.

35.What does Slat want to tell us according to the last paragraph?

A.Young generations care less about the environment.

B.The future ecology of the oceans is deeply worrying.

C.People should work hard to decrease plastic pollution.

D.It's quite difficult to repair the damage to the environment.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Just like essays, all speeches have three main sections: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. 36. You need to write a speech in a way that keeps the attention of an audience and helps paint a mental image at the same time. Whatever type of speech you decide to write, find ways to make your words memorable.

The structure of how to write your speech is just the start. 37. Start by paying attention to your audience and their interests. Write the words you’ll speak with passion and enthusiasm, which you also want your listeners to share. When writing your attention-grabbing statements, make sure you are writing what will get their attention, not just yours.

38. Read famous speeches and look at the way they are constructed. Find things that

stand out and figure out what makes it interesting. Oftentimes, speechwriters use rhetorical devices(修辞法)to make certain points easy to remember.

Remember to begin and end your speech with something that will gain and hold the attention of your audience. If you spend too much time getting into your speech, people will zone out or start checking their phones. 39.

40. When you give the speech, think about the tone you should use, and be sure to write the speech in the same flow that you’d use in conversations. A great way to check this flow is to practice reading it out loud. If you stumble(磕磕巴巴)while reading or it feels dull, look for ways to jazz up(使活泼)the words and improve the flow. A.You’ll also need to write the speech skillfully.

B.How you deliver the speech is also important.

C.You can gain inspiratio n from others’ speeches.

D.Instead, if interested, they may stick with you until the end.

E.So the essay form can offer a good foundation for the process.

F.However, unlike essays, speeches are not to be read but to be heard.

G.In other words, your speech should contain some color, drama, or humor.
