Everybody makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. Any decision could be the turning point in your life.

I made an important decision when l was a Junior Three student.

Before l made that decision l was one of the boys who tried hard to act as an adult. l didn’t know that only kids want to sho w themselves as adults. l didn’t listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades went down. so my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I wanted to turn her down but when l looked at her eyes, l felt l couldn’t refuse. lnstead of asking me to study har d, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future.

I never seriously thought about the question. So I kept silent. “Whether you want to go on studying or go to work,’’ she said, “it is your own decision. Your life ought to be decided by yoursel f, not by anyone else, including me.” After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.

For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about myself, my life and what kind of person I wanted to become. I wanted to be a man who made a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.

The path to my future became clear to me. I didn’t act rebelliously[抗拒的]any more. With passion in my heart, I studied hard.

When taking an elevator, do you often push the “close” button？You hope by pushing it, the elevator door will close faster. But what if the button actually fake？

Karen Penafiel is the executive director of the US National Elevator Indu stry. She said that elevators’ “close’’ buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US, and that the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you push.

In the 1990s,the Americans wish Disabilities Act was passed in the US. It means all elevators have to stay open long enough to allow disabled people to enter. Only US firefighters and elevator workers can really use the buttons with special keys.

But the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists(心理学家) ,fake buttons can make you feel better. They give you a sense of control that can help reduce stress. That’s why some other buttons in our lives are fake, too.

For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (恒温器). People may feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workplaces. You are told that traffic light buttons can help make the traffic signals faster. But they may not really work either.
