The comparative analysis of WALL-E & IDIOCRACY Films WALL-E & IDIOCRACY both belong to science fiction comedy. They resort to use power of science fiction to convey certain themes to audience. WALL-E made in 2008, tells a story happening among robots. The background of story is set 800 years in the future. A robot called WALL-E is the only living creature on the earth. In the future, the earth has become uninhabitable and fills with junk and pollution because of human’s misuse of technology and environmental disruption. One day, he falls in love with another robot called EVE who comes from outer space. To change the density of his kind and humanity, they step their feet on the outer space ground and begin a special adventure. IDIOCRACY chooses another topic, telling a story about a person who is willing to accept the hibernation experiment, while unexpectedly, the experience malfunctioned, he wakes up in 500 years. He becomes the smartest person on the earth and by accident, he becomes the candidate of president. He makes lectures and is advocated by his voters. However, not for long, his dream breaks up and he suffered from hurl abuse and attack, even his life is worrisome. Although these two films are established on different topics, both of them reflect social problems, satirize human’s misbehavior and bet people to think the future development of earth.

Both of the movies reflect human’s self-aggrandizement, ignorance and lack of responsibility. In WALL-E, because of disaster caused by human, the earth has

become uninhabitable, as said in the movies: “Too much trash!!! Earth covered. (WALL-E)”Many groups of robots are sent to earth to help humanity to deal with rubbish. Time flies, and the robot is broken one by one. Only WALL-E is left and still works hard. He has to stand loneliness, which trains his ability to think and sense. This forms sharp contrast with humanity who messed earth up and escaped to another planet. It is a huge irony to humanity. By contrast, Idiocracy is completely satirical science fiction, where human are evolving in the direction of idiom. Opposite to Darwin’s evolutionism, the true reason is that social elites are busy with business and has no attempt to birth, while people living in shantytown multiply constantly. Therefore, the former are cleaned out and the later enlarged and become the main society group on the earth. Humanity continues to regress, therefore, Cpl. Joe Bauers becomes the smartest person on the earth after he wakes up in 500 years. He helps to solve the economic crisis and seems to save the earth. However, what most people seek after is not real talent. The society in his period is devoid of social responsibility, intellectual curiosity and justice. It also indicates the breakdown of education: illiteracy, degeneration of language. Their clothing is covered by all kinds of trade marks. This is a society full of commercials, while nobody pursuits the true value. A huge irony to this society is that Camach with the occupational background of wrestler and porn star is elected as American president in 2505 under the support of Mountain Dew.

Two movies describe a future world with absurd and bold imagination, which highlight and satirize human’s ignorance and voracity. No matter their content and

conception, they are better skilled. Both of the movies set the background in the future America. But the plots develop in two opposite directions. From the methods of expression, comparing with noisy beginning in Idiocracy, during the first fifteen minutes, there is nearly no dialogue, but silence sometimes is more significant than voice. WALL-E satirizes human crazily developing technology, mocks those green companies who always put particular emphasis on environmental protection and evokes the movies fans to think through the scene. Although robots are made by metals and have no language to communicate. But what they convey are warmth and true love. To the contrary, IDIOCRACY directly reflects human’s foolish with voice. People are foul-mouthed. Although they are armed with metal equipment, human use them to overcome. Comparing the posters of both films, we can see the poster of Idiocracy is darker, which indicates the decline of humanity. By contrast, the poster of WALL-E is lighter, which is correspond with the bright future of human explored by robots. Not only showed in the poster, the whole film also followed such luminosity arrangement.

WALL-E and IDIOCRACY employ scientific methods to present the future world to audience, which successfully reflect current environmental and technological problems and satirize human’s arrogant and stupid. The topics selected in these two films are novel and their expressing methods are unique, which easily attract people’s attention. And most importantly, these two films reflected some social phenomenons, which are worth audience thinking. Therefore, these two films are very great and successful.
