Some people have to use public (公共的) transport, some dislike it and still some love it. If everyone has a car and drives anywhere they want to go, there will be serious traffic problems on the road. Luckily, trains are a good form of public transport.

British people use trains a lot. This is especially so for people who are travelling from London to Paris. Every day about 20 trains leave London. They travel at a very high speed (速度) and people feel glad that the trains take only 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Paris. It's much faster to travel by train than by bus or by car. This is because people have to drive cars or buses very carefully and lowly for many reasons, such as speed limits and traffic jams. However, when you are travelling by train, the speed is almost the same and there is no traffic jam for a train.

Besides, Londoners think taking a train is one of the safest ways of travelling on the ground. Trains take quite a number of quality tests while they are made. More importantly, they have to take many safety checks before they are used on the rail track.

What's more, trains in Britain are comfortable and provide fine services (服务) for their users. When you are on a London train, you will find that the train has comfortable tables and seats where people can sit. They also provide food services and power plugs (电源插头) for personal computers or mobile phone.

D. cars will stop working

38. The 3rd paragraph of the passage mainly talks about the ________ of trains.

A. speed

B. safety

C. services

D. problems

39. Londoners often travel by train because trains are ________.

A. old and slow

B. large, clean and powerful

C. fine and important

D. fast, safe and comfortable

40. What can we know from the passage?

A. We can travel from London to Paris in less than 2 hours.

B. We can do our work with personal computers on the train.

C. We have to wait till we get off the train in order to have some food.

D. The trains are only checked for quality reasons before they are used.

八年级英语阅读竞赛试卷 Name:__________ Class:___________ A Sociologists(社会学家), working in western countries, have found that a large number of women wished they had been born men. The number is said to be as high as 60% in Germany. “Women often wish they had the same chances as men have, and think it is still men’s world.” Said Dr. James Helen, one of the sociologists who did the study. Many men say that they have more duties than women. A man has to make money to support(养活) his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against their wives working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children cannot be taken good care of. If women take full-time jobs, they won’t be able to do what they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up the children. Some women disagree. They say they want to get out of their homes and to have freedom to choose between work and home life. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances. Anne Harper has a very good job. She also believes in “Women’s Liberation”. “I don’t wish I were a man,” she says, “and I don’t think many women do. But I do wish people would stop treating us like second-class people. At work, for example, we usually do the work that men do but get paid less. There are still a lot of jobs only to men usually they are the best ones. If you are a man, you have a much better chance of living a wonderful life. How many women scientists are there…or engineers?” 1.Many men think_______. A. women can’t do what men can. 初二英语阅读竞赛

海滨中学初二年级英语节阅读竞赛 班级:_________姓名:__________ 执笔:吕晨审核:高升 一.阅读理解。每题2.5分,共100分。 (1) Every year, tens of thousands of Chinese middle school students go to foreign countries for further study. The popular destinations are America, Britain, Australia, Japan and Canada. Chinese children hope a lot to go abroad to get a wider view of the world. However, life in foreign countries is a big challenge for them, because they will meet a culture shock and language problems. Amy Lee, a 15-year-old student from Shenzhen, began to study in a senior high school in Vancouver, Canada, in January. To her surprise, her teachers there never force students to study. And there isn’t much homework. Because of the different education system, students there have more free time and more space for thinking. However, as Chinese students, we must spend our time and money properly, or we won’t have an easy time. For example, some of Amy’s Chinese friends spent their whole year’s money in the first three months of the term. What’s worse, they didn’t pass their exams. Without doubt, studying abroad at a young age can help students learn foreign languages quickly and it can enrich their minds, but they should also know about the challenges. ‘Make sure that you are well prepared if you decide to study abroad,’Amy said. ( ) 1.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph? A.Many Chinese students get further study in foreign countries. B.Chinese students don’t have an easy time in foreign countries. C.Chinese students always fail their exams in foreign countries. D.There are differences between studying at home andstudying abroad. ( ) 2. Amy suggests that we should _______ if we decide to study abroad. A. Watch English movies B. have a lot of money C. be well prepared D. talk with foreigners ( ) 3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.Life in foreign countries is a piece of cake for Chinese students. B.Amy Lee studies in Canada and she needn’t do much homework. C.It’s not easy for some of Amy’s Chinese friends to get used to the life in Canada. D.One of the challenges for Chinese students studying abroad is the language problem. (2) These days haze(雾霾)is around us here and there. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner. Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year,he uses as mush energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a ton of pollutants, including CO2,from going into the atmosphere. Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions(排放).Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car’s emissions by half. What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.
