occupies a higher social position and

commands greater respect in the

community than the common laborer

or even the skilled factory worker, he

may take pains to point out that his

father started life in America as a

farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual (体力的)

labor is now still seen in many aspects

of Ameri?can life. One is invited to

dinner at a home that is not only

comfortably but even luxuriously (豪

华的) furnished and in which there is

every evidence of the fact that the

family has been able to afford foreign

travel, expensive hobbies, and college

education for the children; yet the

hostess probably will cook the dinner

herself, will serve it herself and will

wash dishes af?terward, furthermore

the dinner will not consist merely of

something quickly and easily

as?sembled from contents of various

cans and a cake or a pie bought at the

nearby bakery. On the contrary, the

hostess usually takes pride in careful

preparation of special dishes. A

pro?fessional may talk about washing

the car, digging in his flowerbeds,

painting the house. His wife may even

help with these things, just as he often

helps her with the dishwashing. The

son who is away at college may wait

on table and wash dishes for his living,

or during the summer he may work

with a construction gang on a highway

in order to pay for his educa?tion.

7. What makes a person a scientist?

Does he have ways or tools of

learning that are differ?ent from those

of others? The answer is "no". It is not

the tools a scientist uses but how he

uses these tools that makes him a

scientist. You will probably agree that

knowing how to use a power is

important to a carpenter. You will

probably agree, too, that knowing how

to in?vestigate, how to discover

information, is important to everyone.

The scientist, however, goes one step

further, he must be sure that he has a

reasonable answer to his questions

and that his answer can be confirmed

by other persons. He also works to fit

the answers he gets to many questions

into a large set of ideas about how the

world works.

The scientist's knowledge must be

exact. There is no room for half right

or right just half the time. He must be

as nearly right as the conditions

permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the con?ditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in sci?ence. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, Einstein's ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investi?gations. (263 words)(10分)

8. In parts of the Middle East, several

years may pass between rainstorms.

There is thus a serious shortage of

water, so that desalination plants have

to be used to make fresh water from

sea water.

A new scheme is now being tested. If

it is successful, it will be of great

interest and value to many countries.

The first step in the scheme is to find

a flat iceberg about 1.5 km long and

300 to 400 meters wide. The best

place to look is in Antarctica, where

the icebergs tend to be more regular in

shape than those from the arctic.

Engineers would start by cutting one

end of the iceberg to the arrow-head

shape of a ship. This would reduce the

resistance of the iceberg to the sea

when it is pulled by ships. The iceberg

would be wrapped in plastic and cloth

to reduce the rate of melting as it

passes through warm seas. At the

same time, a protective ridge around

the top would keep water melted by

the sun. this would prevent the heat of

the sun from further melting the

iceberg.

A French engineering company,

backed by Arab money, has prepared

plans to send an iceberg to Saudi

Arabia at a cost of U.S. $21 cents a

cubic meter. (This is below the current

cost of getting water from a

desalination plant and is the major

attraction of the scheme.) Ships will

have to pull an iceberg for over 7,000

miles and the voyage will last at least

six months. It is estimated that a large

iceberg would produce at least 70

billion liters of fresh water. The

average daily consumption of water is

about 225 million liters per million

people. Thus in a country of about

eight million people, a large iceberg

would provide enough fresh water for

more than a month if it could be

stored and distributed efficiently.(10

9. Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls.

Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in types of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women----especially women in their childbearing tears actually delay economic development and result in lower productivity, poor quality and inefficiency.

To solve the problem, they have suggested that the working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers wee given double wages. They argue that under these circumstances, families would retain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better.

The suggestion has been flatly rejected by 9 out of 10 people polled.

A hundred persons in a big city were questioned last summer. Out of 50 women, 46 said they were unwilling to leave their jobs, no matter what the situation. The other 4 said they would like to return home if their jobs could be taken by their sons or daughters. Of 50 men polled, only 6 said they would like to see their wives resign their jobs, if it meant higher wages for themselves.

Some other people have suggested another way called “phased employment”theory. The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggests that women on leave receive 75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the 3-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society. Some of those polled, both women and men, felt the idea is a good one. It definitely seems to be

more acceptable than the suggestion

that women return to home forever.(10

说明:16. Much of the world’s coffee

is grown in Brazil. Not long ago an

unseasonable frost swept through

coffee plantations there. The result

affected people in many countries for

a long time to come.

At first, reports of serious damage

were received. These led to a sharp

rise in the price of coffee, which had

not been a highly profitable crop.

Growers in other countries made extra

efforts to increase their exports to

profit from the expected shortage.

However, they were hampered by

smugglers who wished to avoid

government controls. The price of

coffee fell slightly.

Then large restaurants and hotels

began to buy coffee to build up stocks

for future use. The price rose sharply

and public resistance developed.

Housewives organized a boycott of

coffee. This led to a rise in the price of

tea and a fall in the price of coffee.

Much to the dismay of growers, the

price fell sharply. Their response was

rather surprising. Instead of selling

their stocks of coffee, they began to

buy on the open market. Their motive

was clear. They wanted to force the

price of coffee up, and one way of

doing this was to reduce the amount

of coffee available for sale to the

public.

Luckily for coffee-drinkers, this move

failed. Restaurants and hotels stopped

buying coffee. Large numbers of small

growers had to sell their crops to keep

alive. The large growers found that

they were buying more coffee than

they were growing. They abandoned

their efforts and let the normal law of

supply and demand decided the price.

Meanwhile, millions of people had

changed to cheaper drinks and would

not switch back to coffee.(10分)

17. The process by means of which human beings can arbitrarily make certain things stand for other tings may be called the symbolic process. Everywhere we turn, we see the symbolic process at work. Stripes on the sleeve can be made to stand for military rank; rings of gold or pieces of paper can stand for wealth; crossed sticks can stand for a set of religious beliefs. There are few thing that men do or want to do, possess or want to possess, that have not, in addition to their mechanical or biological value, a symbolic value.

All fashionable clothes are highly symbolic: materials, cut, and ornament are dictated only to a slight degree by considerations of warmth, comfort or practicability. The more we dress up in fine clothes, the more we restrict our freedom of action.

Food is also highly symbolic. Specific foods are used to symbolize specific festivals. For example, moon cakes are eaten to celebrate the Chinese mid-autumn festival as the Chinese

think that on the Mid-Autumn Day

(August 15th of the lunar year), the

moon is at its brightest.

We select our furniture to serve as

visible symbols of our taste, wealth,

and social position. We trade in

perfectly good cars for later models

not always to get better transportation,

but to give evidence to the community

that we can afford it.

I once had an eight-year-old car in

good running condition. A friend of

mine, a repairman who knew the

condition of the car, kept urging me to

trade it for a new model. “But why?”

I asked, “The old car’s in fine shape

still.”The repairman answered

scornfully, “Yeah, but what the hell.

All you’ve got is transportation.”

Recently, the term “transportation

car”has begun to appear in

advertisements, for example, “4B

Dodge----Runs perfectly well:

transportation car. Leaving, must sell.

$100”. Apparently it means a car that

has no symbolic value and is good

only for getting you there and

bringing you back----a poor kind of

vehicle indeed!(10分)

18. In the past twenty years, there has

been an increasing tendency for

workers to move from one country to

another. While some newly

independent countries have

understandably restricted most jobs to

local people, other countries have

attracted and welcomed migrant

workers. This is particularly the case

in the Middle East, where increased

oil incomes have enabled many

countries to call in outsiders to

improve local facilities. Thus the

Middle East has attracted oil-workers

from the U.S.A. and Europe. It has

brought in construction workers and

technicians from many countries,

including South Korea and Japan.

In view of the difficult living and

working conditions in the Middle East,

it is not surprising that the pay is high

to attract suitable workers. Many

engineers and technicians can earn at

least twice as much money in the

Middle East as they can in their own

country, and this is a major attraction.

An allied benefit is the low taxation or

complete lack of it. This increases the

net amount of pay received by visiting

workers and is very popular with

them.

Sometimes a disadvantage has a

compensating advantage. For example,

the difficult living conditions often

lead to increased friendship when

workers have to depend on each other

for safety and comfort. In a similar

way, many migrant workers can save

large sums of money partly because of the lack of entertainment facilities. The work is often complex and full of problems but this merely presents an increased challenge to engineers who prefer to find solutions to the problems rather than do routine work in their own country.

One major problem which affects migrant workers in the Middle East is that their jobs are temporary ones. They are nearly always on contract, so it is not easy for them to plan ahead with great confidence. This is to be expected, since no country welcomes a large number of foreign workers as permanent residents. In any case, migrant workers accept this disadvantage, along with others, because of the considerable financial benefits which they receive.(10分) 18.1). The countries in the Middle East have welcomed migrant workers because_______.(2分)

说明:19. The central problem of

economics is to satisfy the people's

and nation's wants.

The problem we are faced with is that

our resources, here identified as

money, are . The only way we can

resolve our problem is to make

choices. After looking at our resources,

we must examine our list of and

identify the things we need

immediately, those we can postpone,

and we cannot afford. As individuals,

we face the central problem involved

in economics-deciding just how to

allocate our limited our limited

resources to provide with the greatest

satisfaction of our wants.

Nations face the same problem. As a

country's population , the need for

more goods and services grows

correspondingly. Resources necessary

to production may increase, but there

are enough resources to satisfy the

total desires of a nation. Whether the

budget meeting is taking place in the

family living room, in the conference

room of the corporation of directors,

or in the chamber of the House of

Representatives in Washington, the

basic problem still exists. We need to

find of allocating limited resources in

order to satisfy unlimited wants.

A short time ago economists divided

goods into two categories, free and

economic. The former, like air and

water, were in abundance that

economists had no concern for them.

After all, economics is the of

scarcity and what to do about it.

Today many of these "free goods" are

very expensive to use. Pollution has

made clean air and water expensive

for producers' extra costs, and

taxpayers who pay for the

government's involvement in cleaning

the environment.

In the 1990s, almost all goods are.

Only by effort and moneyobtained in

the form people wish.

Meeting needs of people and the

demands from resource available the

basic activity of production. In trying

to meet unlimited wants from limited

economic goods, production leads to

new problems in economics.(15分)

说明:11. If you have ever had an

operation, you were first put to sleep

with a gas you breathed or by a

chemical injected into your body.

Medical workers in the United States

of America and Europe have used

these methods in operations since

1842. They have been valuable in

preventing great pain which would

have occurred if the patient had not

been put to sleep.

The Chinese, however, have been able

to perform operations for about 4,000

years without putting the patient to

sleep. They use a method called

acupuncture. This involves sticking

flexible needles into certain parts of

the body.

The person who performs the

acupuncture must know how to insert

the needles so the needles themselves

are not painful. This person also

knows where to place the needles so

the patient feels no pain in the area

where the operation is to be performed.

The needles are not necessarily

inserted near the region where the

pain is to be prevented.

Today, the Chinese are learning to be

more efficient and skilled in their use

of acupuncture: but more research

should be done before the Chinese can

explain more convincingly how it

works.

A surgical patient is given a choice

between having acupuncture or having

one of the chemicals used for putting

him to sleep. It has been estimated

that over half of the patients chose

acupuncture because there is no

sickness after the operation, whereas

the chemicals may make the patient

sick for a few hours or a day.

If the person has chosen acupuncture,

the needles are inserted in the proper

places. After several minutes, the

patient is examined to see if he or she

can feel pain in the region where the

operation will be performed. If no

pain is felt, the operation is performed.

The patient is fully awake and can feel

the surgeon working.

Some doctors in the United States

have been skeptical about acupuncture.

However, it is already being used to a

very limited extent in this country. It

will be interesting to see if the method

becomes adopted here.(10分)

acupuncture used in operation

12. Shoe manufacture today is based upon a remarkable invention developed by a young black genius in 1883.

Matzeliger was born in Paramaribo, Dutch Guiana, on September 15, 1852. His father was a Dutch engineer who had been sent to the colony to take charge of the government machine shops. When young Matzeliger was ten years old, he joined his father at the machine shops as an apprentice. At the age of nineteen he became a sailor on an East Indian merchant ship. In 1876 Matzeliger went to Boston, Massachusetts. After working there for a year, he moved to Lynn, where he remained for the rest of his life. Because of his knowledge of mechanics and shoemaking, Matzeliger was able to get a job in a shoe factory, operating a sole-sewing machine. While working there, he noticed that there was no machine that could last shoes. He began his plans for inventing a shoe-lasting machine by closely watching hand-lasters at their work. In his experiments he used old pieces of wood and metal. He even made his own tools. Patiently he tested one idea after another.

For years he lived in poverty, saving his money for his project. Fortunately, he succeeded in getting financial help from two businessmen in exchange for a two-thirds interest in his invention. With this extra money, Matzeliger finally achieved what he was after: A lasting machine that could turn out a complete shoe. His machine indeed changed the shoe industry. It not only greatly increased production but cut the cost of shoes by

half. By 1889 the demand for the new

lasting machine became worldwide.

What was Matzeliger’s reward?

Because of his long and hard work

and the lack of proper food and

warmth during his years of poverty,

his health had suffered. In the summer

of 1886 he caught a cold which

developed into tuberculosis. For three

tears he was so sick that he had to

remain in bed. Finally, on August 24,

1889, he died at the age of

thirty-seven.(10分)

13. A higher reading rate, with no loss

of comprehension, will help you in

other subjects as well as English.

Naturally, you will not read every

book at the same speed. You would

expect to read a newspaper, for

example, much more rapidly than a

physics or economics textbook----but

you can raise your average reading

speed over the whole range of

materials you wish to cover so that the

percentage gain will be the same

whatever kind of reading you are

concerned with.

Perhaps you would like to know what

reading speeds are common among

native English-speaking university

students and how those speeds can be

improved. Tests in Minnesota, U.S.A.

have shown that students without

special training can read English of

average difficulty at speeds of

between 240 and 250 w.p.m. with

about 70% comprehension. Minnesota

claims that after 12 half-hour lessons,

one a week, the reading speed can be

increased, with no loss of

comprehension, to around 500 w.p.m.

with 70% or more comprehension,

you will be doing quite well, though

of course any further improvement of

speed-with-comprehension will be a

good thing.

When you practice reading with short

passages, do not try to take in each

word separately, one after the other. It

is much more difficult to grasp the

broad theme of the passage this way,

and you will also get stuck on

individual words which may not be

absolutely essential to a general

understanding of the passage. It is a

good idea to skim through the passage

very quickly first (say 500 words in a

minute or so) to get the general idea of

each paragraph. Titles, paragraph

headings and emphasized words

(underlined or in italics) can be a great

help in getting the outline of the

passage. It is surprising how many

people do not read titles, introductions

or paragraph headings.(10分)

14. Thousands of years ago, ten of our

very distant ancestors were hungry.

They went out and picked berries or

dug up roots to eat. Four of them

chose poisonous food and died. The

remaining six noticed that their food

was safe to eat. They told their

children, who, in turn, passed the

message on to their descendants. In

this way, habit became a vital factor in

the survival of mankind: if you ate the

right plant, you lived; if you wanted to

make your own experiments, you

would probably die.

The importance of habit in the

survival of the human species is an

interesting matter. Even today, most of

us hesitate when we are invited to eat

a new type of food or drink something

we have not tasted before. Even if the

food or drink is offered by a friend,

we are usually not at all anxious to

experiment and accept the offer.

When you get up tomorrow morning,

notice which shoe or sock you put on

first. Then notice which one you put

on other days. You may discover that

(a) you tend to put on one shoe or

sock first every day, and that (b) if you

are right-handed, you usually deal

with your left shoe or sock first. If you

try to change this habit, you may find

it uncomfortable or annoying, and you

will soon return to your old habit.

When it comes to other matters, we

often follow a fixed pattern. We sleep

in one or two favorite ways. We often

follow familiar routes even when they

are not the shortest or best. We often

wear a watch on the same wrist even

when there is no real reason for doing

so. In hundreds of other ways, we

show that we are creatures of habit,

following fixed patterns of behavior.

This characteristic can help us to

survive but it can be a barrier to

progress too. We must be alert and not

let a beneficial factor become a

harmful one.(10分)

racial prejudice is acute, violence has

been taken for granted as a means of

solving differences; and this is not

even questioned. There are countries

the white man imposes his rule by

brute force; there are countries where

the black man protests by fire to

cities and by looting and pillaging.

Important people on both sides, who

would in other respects appear to be

men, get up and calmly argue

violence- --as if it were a legitimate

solution, like any other. What is really

frightening, what really fills you

despair, is the realization that when it

comes to the crunch, we have made no

actual progress . We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed and the suffering nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder hit us.

The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted by their own because they advocate such apparently outrageous things law enforcement. If half the energy that goes into violent acts were , if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums and ghettos, at improving living-standards and providing education and employment all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution.(15分)

《大学英语》样卷 Part II. Reading Comprehension (40 points) Directions:There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One How do young children learn to have good values? How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness, patience, and self-discipline? At a time when more and more parents worry about the negative and violent images (暴力形象) their children see on TV, in the movies and, on the internet, some are turning to fairy tales (童话) as a way to teach their young ones how to behave in society. Fairy tales were not always intended for children. We know this because some of these stories have existed for hundreds of years and were passed from generation to generation through songs and drama. They were considered entertainment for everyone, not only for young people. In these ancient stories, the heroes were extremely clever, fiercely independent, and never gave up. Over the years, some of the heroes’ qualities and story lines have been changed to fit the times. Psychologists think that fairy tales have a positive influence on children because they present the two sides of good and evil very clearly. When children hear the stories, they develop sympathetic for the heroic characters. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of people we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones, in our lives. What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In “The Princess and the Pea,”a poorly dressed girl who insists she is a princess is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that she is rewarded because she stayed true to herself. In “The Little Mermaid,” the mermaid (美人鱼) who lives under the sea longs to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In “Pinocchio,” a wooden puppet (木偶) turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth. Teaching values is the reason most often given for teaching literature and encouraging reading. These old stories can indeed teach us lessons about human relationships that are universal (普遍的) enough to survive throughout the centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and are unlikely to disappear any time soon. 1. What do we learn about fairy tales from the passage? A. They are written solely for children.
