When I was young, my father used to grow carnations — a kind of flower that was red, pink or white. He took care of them with much love and devotion. Every day he came home from work, he wo uld enjoy watching them. And he used to tell us, “No one should touch my flowers.”

I was riding on the airport tram(电车) the other day, when I noticed a mum with her two little kids. Both had smart phones in their hands and completely forgot what was going on around them. They focused all their attention on their phones and had them practically in their faces. The mum was just looking outside. She probably wasn’t thinking about how those screens were affecting her children’s eyesight.
Recently, a study by British researchers found that children and young adults are becoming “screen sighted”, or what we call nearsight ed.
Since smart phones were started in 1997, there has been a 35% increase in nearsightedness. Compared with the 16 inches used to read magazines and newspapers, holding a cell phone 8 inches from your eyes is clearly creating eyesight problems. Over time, smart phone use can also create headaches and eye strain(劳损), so limited time on these products is needed.
Of course, the biggest concern is that long-time use of a smart phone reduces the child’s face-to-face communications needed for their mind development. Too more or higher screen time is the problem. The good advice is moderation(适量) in all technology use.
In this case, the mum could have made both kids in the fun of riding the tram, pointing out all the cool things you can see and feel as the train sped down the track. The best advice is not to hand a cell phone to a child in order to take his or her time.
