Dear Jim,

How is everything going? Hopefully all is fine. I am more than glad to know that you’ve become fairly interested in Chinese history. In your last email you asked me about my favorite person in Chinese history. Now I am writing to introduce my hero, Qu Yuan, to you.

Qu Yuan, a poet, served as an official in his beloved motherland, Chu, 2000 years ago. It was a period of time when fierce wars between countries broke out. What impresses me about him is the endless contributions he made to save his country from being invaded. He bravely urged the rulers of his country in his poems, which became the remarkable literary treasure of his day. Although he chose to commit suicide after hearing the news of his country being conquered by invaders, his spirit is fully inherited and developed by later generations. Thus, it is Qu Yuan who teaches me the first lesson on patriotism and the responsibility that one must shoulder to protect one’s own country.

Last week, we took the foreign students in our school to experience the authentic tea culture, which turned out to be extremely rewarding.

When arriving at the tea house, the foreign students were impressed by the unique tea pots and tea cups. I gave them a specific and thorough introduction of tea culture, including its profound history, its rich variety, and the exquisite craftsmanship of making tea. Having fueled their great interest, I then began to teach them how to make tea.

For the sake of delivering a clear presentation, I slowly demonstrated the traditional procedure of making tea in detail. Absorbed in every move of mine, the foreign students were once again amazed by this unique culture and they couldn’t help taking pictures from time to time.

Fascinated by the whole process, the foreign students asked for an attempt politely. Washing the tea pots, adding tea leaves, and pouring water into the cups, they followed my instructions and were really immersed in charming tea culture. Everyone beamed with delight and the tea house witnessed a really enjoyable time for all of us.

At the end of the activity, holding the tea bags in our hands, we took a picture to memorize the unforgettable day. Not only did it hit me that our traditional culture like tea culture was of great charm and huge value, but also I realized it our duty to spread our own culture further the world.

Last week, our class participated in the activity themed "Actions for a Greener Earth", which left us a deep impression.

Early in the morning, I, together with my classmates, arrived at school, noticing a board calling on us to act on the Earth Day. We gathered around and showed great interest in it.

Reading through it, we felt different ideas flooding into every inch of our minds and we

couldn't wait to put our ideas into reality. Having made a heated discussion on what we could

do, we devoted ourselves to the preparation in high spirits, such as making some

environmental-friendly bags, turning the waste into treasures and packing our productions. It

wasn’t long before we finished our production. Seeing the stuff we had made with our ow n

hands, we felt a sense of excitement and fulfillment.

Then came the long-awaited day. We exhibited our works at the gate of the community, which triggered an enormous response. I was in charge of the distribution of our products

while my classmates assisted me. I gave the passers-by a vivid introduction about our activity

and shared our experience on how to make the waste profitable. Our stand turned out to be the

center of attention so that we were invited to deliver a speech. Excitedly and proudly, I came

up on stage on behalf of the whole class and addressed a speech, presenting our works and

calling on everybody to protect the Earth, our common home. No words could describe the

exciting moment when applause rang out from all the audience./What cheered us most was

that my speech received thunderous applause from the audience, which brought us a strong

sense of pride and achievement.

Not only did we do our bit to something really worthwhile, but also we realized it our duty to contribute to protecting the Earth and make our planet a better place to live in.
