In my opinion，the Internet is helpful rather than harmful as someone else thinks. As is known to all，the Internet is playing a more and more important part in our daily life. On the Internet，we can read news at home and from abroad and get as much information as we can. We can send e - mails or make phone calls to our family as well as to our friends. We can also attend the net school，read many books and even teach ourselves English. We can also enjoy music，watch matches and play computer games on the Internet. We can even do shopping on line. Besides，we can improve our ability to operate the computer.

But we should not be given to the Internet，or we'll get our life and study destroyed. Besides，we should keep off the harmful websites. Anyhow，this doesn't prevent the Internet becoming our friend. We can't throw away the apple because of the core，can we？

Passage 1

Jacks is the name of a game that is quite popular with children. To play jacks, you will need a small rubber ball and ten small metal objects called jacks.

The rules for this game are not vey difficult. To begin, you put the ten jacks on the floor or ground in front of you. Throw the ball up (but not too high), pick up one jack, and then catch the ball. Keep the jack in your hand and then continue to pick up the other jacks one at a time. You lose your turn if you do not catch the ball, you do not pick up a jack, or you drop any jacks from your hand.

When you finish all ten jacks, you now try to do the same thing again but with two jacks at one time. This is more difficult of course. You lose your turn if you make any of the other three mistakes or if you do not pick up exactly two jacks each time. (172 words)

Passage 2

My grandfather came from Hungary and was the only one in his family who settled down in the United States. The rest of his family remained in Europe. When World War I broke out, he seemed to have become another man, downhearted. Such obvious change was not born out of concern for his welfare, but out of fear: if his only son, my uncle, had to go to war, it would be cousin fighting against cousin.

One day in 1918, my uncle Milton received his draft notice. My grandparents were very upset. But my mother, at the age of 10, felt on top of the world about her soldier brother going off to war. Realizing how he was regarded by his little sister and all of her friends, my uncle bought them all service pins, which meant that they had a loved one in the service. All the little girls were delighted.

The moment came when my uncle and other soldiers, without any training but all in uniforms, boarded the train. The band played and the crowd cheered. Although no one noticed, I am sure my grandmother had a tear in her eye for the only son. The train slowly pulled out, but not about a thousand yards when it suddenly paused. Everyone stared in wonder as the train slowly returned to the station. There was a dead silence before the doors opened and the men started to step out. Someone shouted, “The war is over!” For a moment, nobody moved, but then the people heard

someone bark orders at the soldiers. The men lined up in two lines, walked down the steps, and with the band playing, marched down the street, as returning heroes, to be welcomed home. My mother said it was a great day, but she was just a little disappointed that it didn’t last a tiny bit longer. (315 words)
