Can you imagine walking into a gym and seeing dogs lifting weights or cats jogging? We’re being a bit silly thinking of dogs and cats going to the gym, but we do have
a reason. Just like human beings, pets that don’t get enough exercise can become overweight. Overweight pets can develop serious health problems just like we can. So, if you have a pet, part of being a good owner is making sure that your pet gets the right amount and kind of exercise.
Before you start your pet on an exercise program, be sure to schedule a check-up for your pet and ask your veterinarian how much and what type of exercise your pet needs.
Just like humans, pets need to be started out slowly. Over time, they will get fit and be able to exercise for longer periods of time. If you exercise alongside your pet, you’ll benefit, too!
Starting out, you might want to play with your pet for 15－20 minutes at a time. Gradually, you can turn those plays into several 30－minute walks or jogs each week. If your pet is especially active, you can extend them to an hour or longer.
Of course, some pets, such as cats, may not be easy to take for a walk or a run. These pets still need exercise, though. Don’t underestimate the value of energetic indoor play, such as games of chase, for these types of pets.

As health care costs continue to rise, a growing number of companies are working out programs designed to keep their employees healthy.
Thomas Chappl e is the senior vice president. “It’s really important to us because medical costs are going up like crazy,” he says. “This company spends more than $ 200 million a year on medical costs for its employees around the country. The best thing we have seen as a way to control the medical cost is individual fitness.”
“We have a fitness center,” Shawn Flaherty, director of public relations for Freddie Mac., says. “We have a health benefits plan that encourages people to work out three times a week, get cholesterol （胆固醇）checks, as well as ‘do not smoke.’If they do that, it will cost them less for the health benefits.”
Rachelle Clark works for Freddie Mac. “I feel gr eat. You know the benefit is rewarding. I like to look good and feel healthy. I am just fortunate that I work for the company that provides some type of facility for the employees.”
While on-site fitness centers are popular, some companies pay membership fees at local gyms for employees. The companies also offer classes such as boxing, yoga and dancing. Employees see those health programs as a valuable benefit.
Tom Brook exercises five days a week. As a newspaper reporter he has a tight schedule, although T om says it’s not that difficult for him to make time for a workout.“It is great. It is right here where we work,”says Tom. “So everybody gets a chance to use it whenever they want to. I have lost weight and never been in better shape.”

A new study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that heavy use of platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat was associated with feelings of being separated from society among young adults—basically the opposite of what we are led to believe.
Study co-author Brian Primack and his team surveyed 1,787 U. S. adults aged 19 to 32 and asked them about their usage of 11 social media platforms. They also asked participants questions related to social isolation, such as how often they felt left out. The participants who reported spending the most time on social media—over two
hours a day—had twice the odds of perceived（感知到的）social isolation than those who said they spent a half-hour per day or less on the same sites.
According to Tom Kersting, psychotherapist and author of Disconnected, the key to understanding these results lies in our understanding of “connections.”“Humans are social —emotional beings, meaning that it is in our DNA to be connected, face-to-face, with other humans,”he told Reader’s Digest. “Although people think being on social media all the time makes them ‘connected’ to others, they are actually ‘disconnected,’because the more time one spends behind a screen, the less time one spend face-to-face.”
“Part of the issue of loneliness is that the majority of people who use social media aren’t just posting,they are also viewing,” Kersting continued. “They are spending a lot of time looking at everyone else’s posts, where they are and what they are doing. The constant exposure to everyone else’s ‘perfect’ life experiences causes feelings of being left out.”
So what’s the answer? It’s simple, says Kersting. “The solution to this is resisting the temptation to look at everyone else’s life. Just focus on your own life, where you’re going, what you are grateful for, and what you want to accomplish in this world.”
