这个句子和一道高考题目很相似.涉及到what的特殊用法。

2001年全国高考英语试卷选择题中有这样一题:

The home improvements have taken what little there is _______my spare time.

由于考生不懂句中what的特殊用法,不能完全理解整个句子的真正含义,结果误入“歧途”者甚多,即使后来知道了正确选项为C “of”,他们还是难以明白其中道理。那么,为什么要选C “of”呢?从语法结构上讲of my spare time又是作什么成份的呢?句子怎样理解?要懂这个道理,首先得明白句中what的一个特殊用法。

一、这里的what不作“什么”解,不作“多么”解,也不作“所……的事”或“所……的人”解,而是作“尽可能的”(as much…as)或“任何……的”(any …that)或“所有……的”(all…that)解,例如:

1.You must be prepared to take what employment I can get for you.=You must be prepared to take any employment that I can get for you.(我不管给你找个什么工作,你都得愿意接受)。2.What people I met there were very friendly to me.=All the people that I met there were very friendly to me.(我在那儿碰到的所有的人都对我十分友好。)

3.I will give you what help I can.=I will give you as much help as I can.(我会尽力帮你忙的。)

二、what在这样用时常和few或little连用,再修饰名词,其含义是“全部的……尽管不多”“虽少但全部”,或“所仅有的……”。例如:

1.I will lend you what few books I can spare.=I will lend you all the few books that I can spare.(我愿把我能不用的书都借给你,尽管这些书为数不多。)

2.She saved what little money she could out of her slim salary to help her brother go to school.=She saved all the little money that she could(save)out of her slim salary to help her brother go to school.(她把从她微薄的薪水中留出来的一点点钱都用来送弟弟上学了。)

这样用时,few或little有时可省去。例如:

I contributed what(little)money=(all the little money that I had)towards the fund.(我把我所有的一点点钱都捐给了那项基金。)

因此你的句子就不难理解:

He spent what little spare time he had learning English. 他仅有的一点点业余时间都用来学英语。

又如:牛津高阶英汉双解词典中有这样的一句话:

I spent what little time I had with my family. 我仅有的那一点时间都与家人在一起度过了。

三、what little后往往不加名词,本身就作代词用,在自身引导的从句中作主语或宾语,意思不变。例如:

1.What little he said on the subject was full of wisdom.(他就该问题所谈的一点点话充满了智慧。)

2.He did what little he could.(他尽力做了他能做的一点事。)

高考试题中的what little就属于这种用法,不过该句理解起来难度大,原因是what little做have taken的宾语,本身受两个定语的修饰:一个是there is ,用作定语从句;另一个是of my spare time,用作介词短语。由于定语从句在前,介词短语只好放在后面。随便说一下,there+be

结构用作定语从句时,关系代词往往省略。原句也可改写为(通常不改):

The house improvements have taken what little of my spare time(that)there is.(改进房屋居住条件把我仅有的一点空余时间都搭上了。)

再如:The house consumed what little there was of my spare time.(这房子把我仅有的一点时间都耗掉了。)

四、what few 和what little由于常常一起使用,有些词典已把它们作为惯用法单独列出。如《朗曼当代英语词典》(P1252)上是这么说的:what few/what little those few which, or that little which 并举了下面两个例子:

1.I told him what little I knew on the subject.(我把我对这个问题仅知道的一点都告诉了他)

2.He visits what few friends he has.(他常去拜访他仅有的几个朋友。)

五、实际上,what作关系代词引导的名词性从句,有时也表示上面所说的含义。例如:

1.I gave him what I had.(我把我所有的都给他了)

2.Give me what there is.(把有的都给我。)

3.He deposits what he saves in a bank.(他把他所有节省下来的钱存入银行。)

4.We’ll do what the Party calls us to do.(党叫干啥就干啥。)

What C is to D,that A is to B.(= A is to B what C is to D.) 在这一结构中,喻体在前,主体在后,相当于“just as…,so…”结构,意思也是“A对B而言正如C对D一样”例如: What blood vessel is to a man’s body,that railway is to transportation.(=Just as blood vessel is to a man’s body ,so Railway is to transportation.) 铁路对于运输,好比血管对于人体一样。 2. what 与do with连用,意为“(怎样)处理﹑安排或对付等”。 what常有较灵活的翻译,常用结构是: “what …do with sth./sb.?”或“what to do with s th./sb.” 例如: ① What will you do with the letter?你将把那封信怎样处理? ② The kids do not know what to do with themselves on rainy days. 孩子们不知道雨天干什么好。
