When students from other countries come to the United States, they are sometimes shocked at the informality in American college and university classes. For example, American professors do not dress up and they generally call their students by their first names. Students can speak out in class, without raising their hands. Students can drink coffee, tea, juice, or soft drink during class.

Foreign students can usually get used to these differences easily. However, tow examples of American informality are very difficult for some to understand. First, American students call their teachers by their first names. Instead of calling a teacher Mr. Smith or Professor Johnson, they call them Tom or Barbara. In some countries, students are not allowed to do that. Second, American students sometimes criticize(批评) the ideas of their teacher. They might also give their teachers suggestions about changing something in the class. In many countries, students cannot openly criticize their teachers or classes.

Thus, some foreign students feel shocked, embarrassed and uncomfortable in American classrooms. They have two choices. One, they can imitate(模仿) the behavior of the American students. But this will make them feel uncomfortable and disrespectful. Two, they can continue to follow their own customs. But in this case, the American teachers and students might think that the foreign students are too formal or too quiet.

Have you ever been in a meeting while someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away? You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and never have daydreaming again. Most of us, from earliest school days, have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.

On the contrary," says L. Giambra, an expert in psychology(心理学), "daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn't get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day... You can't possibly do all your thinking with a conscious(有意识的) mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that the unconscious and conscious states of mind have silent dialogues."

Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says, "We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures...Day dreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life."

Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand. It's easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully.

Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of handling them.

Daydreams cannot be predicted(预料); they move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of useful ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a main source of creative energy.

When the TV viewer turns on his set, what sort of programs does he have to choose from? You might think there would be more programs devoted to entertainment than to anything else, but that’s not the case.

In most countries, fewer than 20% of broadcasting hours are devoted to entertainment. U.S. figures are high —34.8%,and the fun-loving Canadians are even higher with 44%. Except Canada and Italy, all countries give more broadcasting time to education than to either information (news, documentaries and so on) or entertainment programs. Of course, few educational broadcasts take place during peak viewing times. In Japan though, more than 60% of broadcasting time is taken up with education of one kind or another -- just another example of the businesslike Japanese philosophy. In the U.K., the figure is 56.4%. The Italians have fewer educational programs than anyone else. They don’t go in for entertainme nt either. Only about ten percent of viewing time is devoted to dramas and serials, quiz shows, music, sports, etc. You will find more news information programs on Italian TV than anything else. That’s understandable in a country experiencing social and po litical changes. Italians rely on TV to tell them what’s going on —and events are happening almost too fast to follow. The percentage of time the U.S. devoted to news and documentary programs is much smaller. After education, most TV time is given to entertainment. Many of these programs are shown around the world.

We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways.

It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns.

Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like "he went pale and begin to tremble" suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, "he opened his eyes wide" is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese "surprise" can be described in a phrase like “they stretched out their tongues!” Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.

Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do.

I grew up in a community called Estepona. I was seventeen when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him into a distant village called Mijas, on condition that I took the car in to be serviced at a nearby garage. I readily accepted. I drove Dad into Mijas, and promised to pick him up at 4 pm, then dropped off the car at the gaeage. With several hours to spare, l went to a theater. How when the last movie finished, it was six. I was two hours late!

I knew Dad would be angry if he found out I'd been watching movies. So I decided not to tell him the truth. When I got there I apologized for being late, and told him I had come as quickly as I could, but that the car had needed a major repair. I'll never forget look he gave me. "I'm disappointed you feel you have to lie to me, Jason." Dad looked at me again. "When you didn't turn up, I called the garage to ask if there were any problems, and they told me you hadn't yet picked up the car." I felt ashamed as I weakly told him the real reason. A sadness passed through Dad as he listened attentively. "I'm angry with myself. I realize I've failed as a father. I'm going to walk home now and think seriously about where I've gone wrong all these years." "But Dad, it's twenty miles!" My protests and apologies were useless. Dad walked home that day. I drove behind him, begging him all the way, but he walked silently.

Todd was working at his gas station at night when he heard over the radio that a bank in Long Island had been broken into by an armed man who had killed the night guard and got away with $ 150,000. “One hundred and fifty thousand,” Todd whistled. Here's a fellow who just walks into a bank and helps himself to so much money. Todd thought of the difficulty with which he managed to get the amount of money he needed to start his gas station. So many papers to sign, so much money to pay back. The news continued twenty minutes later. The gunman had stopped a car for a ride, and then pushed out the driver. He was possibly heading for the Southern State Parkway in a white Ford. License plate number LJR1939. The voice of the announcer continued: “Look out for white cars. Don't pick up prisoners, and all you folks in gas stations better not do service to a white Ford car.” Todd stood up and tried to see out into the cold night. It was dark but Todd knew the Southern State Parkway was out there. Just then, Todd saw the headlights coming at him and a car pulled in for gas. There it was, a white Ford. He saw the number, LJR1939. “What should I do?” Todd had to make a quick decision. “Yes, sir?” Todd asked while making up his mind for sure. “Fill her up,” the man said sounding like any other driver. When the tank was full, Todd quickly turned round and poin ted a gun at the man. ‘Hands up and get out!’

Unit1 A new study shows that dogs can detect if someone has cancer just by sniffing the person’s breath. Ordinary household dogs with only a few weeks of basic training learn to accurately distinguish between breath samples of lung- and breast-cancer patients and healthy subjects. One expert, who led the research, said, “Our study provides compelling evidence that cancers hidden beneath the skin can be detected simply by (dogs’) examining the odors of a person’s breath.” Early detection of cancers greatly improves a patient’s survival chances, and researchers hope that man’s best friend, the dog, can become an important tool in early screening. Unit 2 A research team recently replicated a bacterium’s genetic structure entirely from l aboratory chemicals, moving one step closer to creating the world’s first artificial organism. The researchers said, “It’s the second step of a three-step process to create a synthetic organism. But the final step could prove far more difficult.” Nonetheless, the research is pushing forward at a rapid pace. Last June, the team revealed details of an experiment in which researchers inserted the DNA of one species of bacterium into the cells of another. That process almost magically booted up the inserted genome. The research team hopes to use a similar trick to boot up the artificially created genome, so as to create a man-made living organism. Unit 3 In recent years, the psychologists from many countries banded together to do a research which indicated that continued income growth could make people apply themselves to an ongoing consumption race rather than promote overall happiness. Everyone has to spend more and more money in order to maintain a constant level of happiness. This is because our vanity and jealousy are functioning . The way to sort out them out is to cultivate the noble sentiment of being considerate and serving the society. People shouldn’t pin all their hopes on money. Instead , friends, family and work are also playing a very improtant role . Therefore, hapiness is not an inborn trait, but a talent which everyone can learn. Unit 4 I used to feel excited at teaching my students the elegant economic theories that could supposedly cure societal problems of all types. But what is the good of all my complex theories when people were dying of starvation on the sidewalks and porches across from my lecture hall? My lessons were like the American movies where the good guys always win. But when I emerged from the comfort of the classroom, I was faced with the reality of the city streets. Here good guys were mercilessly beaten and trampled. Daily life ws getting worse, and the poor were growing even poorer. Unit 5 No one thought that shy little Einstein would grow up to a prominent scientist. He was slow in learning to speak, and he often paused to consider what he would say during a conversation. In school, Albert Einstein was singled out by his teachers as a troublesome child because he liked to ask difficult strange questions. He did not like to memorize facts and rules, but was interested in what lay below the surface of things. When he was four or five years old, for instance, his father gave him a compass. Little Einstein was curious about the mysterious force that could keep a compass needle always pointing north, which prompted him to read widely in science. His real studies were mostly done at home by reading books on mathematics, physics, and philosophy. Unit 6 Most Americans have great vigor and enthusiasm. They prefer to discipline themselves rather than be disciplined by others. They pride themselves on their independence, their right to make their own minds. They tend to take the initiatives, even when there is a risk in doing so. They have courage and do not give in easily. They are considered sentimental. When they see a flag on ceremonial occasions, or attend parades celebrating Ame rica’s glorious past, tears may come to their eyes. They tend to be emotional at the reunions with family and friends, too. Sometimes, they can laugh at themselves and their country, while they will always remain intensely patriotic.
