It might seem ridiculous, but it might also be the logical extension of a growing trend; treating animals as human and treating pet as children, 1 to the toddler (学步的小孩)who eats from the same chair. 2 of this attitude are everywhere, ranging from the innocent to the near-insane. Some people 3 their pets for Halloween, throw them birthday parties, or create social media accounts for them. Five-star cat resorts o ffer spa services. Yoga studios now offer “doga” classes. Stores sell pet pans and bikinis, and doctors will perform cosmetic surgery in case your pet needs a facelift. There seems to be 4 between pets and children. An increasingly large group of people who genuinely believe that having a pet is the same thing as being a parent. They 5

the language of parenthood with their pets, calling themselves “mommy” or “daddy” when talking to their “baby”. Of course, it’s one thing to use such language 6 , as an expression of love or a reflection of the great joy that pets, like children, can create. But it’s quite another to use this language literally Using 7 labels for things not only blurs (使…模糊)the real lines between pets and people but also leads to dangerous misbelief. What if a woman thinks she knows what a mon of two kids if going through because she’s a “mom” to two cats or a man believes having a baby won’t be much different from being a “dad” to a dog?

Every pet has its own parent—another cat or dog that feed and teaches it to survive in the animal kingdom. Our love for pets results from their 8 from us, but once we have them, we treat them as people, taming and teaching them how to pee(撒尿)in the tight place and not drink from the toilet. Sometimes, this goes 9 , leading to horrible industries like pet cosmetic surgery. But we can’t call our role with pets “parenting” when we do the 10

of what a pets parent would do.

11 , “pet parents” claim that they do ev erything real parents do – feed, bathe, cuddle, clean up, care for, and love. Indeed, all these actions constitute part of the routines of true parenthood. But pet parents cannot teach character and morality to cats and dogs, which is the most important job of a parent. Having a child means 12 another mind and soul for adulthood and independence. Having a pet child means keeping an animal obedient and 13 so it never leaves as a child will.

Pet and children serve different roles. Ignoring or denying these differences 14 neither creatures nor people. Calling a pet a child, or yourself its parent, reflects a 15 of what animals are and what parenting is. We can call pets “pets” without loving them any less. 1.A.attractive B.equivalent C.opposite D.valuable 2.A.Changes B.Results C.Explanations D.Examples 3.A.hang up B.take up C.pick up D.dress up 4.A.conflict B.distinction C.confusion D.balance 5.A.create B.adopt C.interpret D.enrich 6.A.lightly B.frequently C.practically D.habitually 7.A.unfriendly B.abnormal C.inaccurate D.inactive 8.A.attention B.freedom C.difference D.separation 9.A.without saying B.out of control C.beyond expectation D.a long way 10.A.best B.joy C.trick D.opposite 11.A.Moreover B.However C.Otherwise D.Therefore 12.A.Preparing B.Exchanging C.Possessing D.Searching 13.A.popular B.miserable C.dependent D.demanding 14.A.shelters B.influences C.upsets D.benefits

The Grand Tourist was typically a young man with a thorough grounding in Greek and Latin literature as well as some leisure time, some means, and some interest in art. The German traveler Johann Winckelmann pioneered the field of art history with his comprehensive study of Greek and Roman sculpture; he was portrayed by his friend Anton Raphael Mengs at the beginning of his long residence in Rome. Most Grand Tourists, however, stayed for briefer periods and set out with less scholarly intentions, accompanied by a teacher or guardian, and expected to return home with souvenirs of their travels as well as an understanding of art and architecture formed by exposure to great masterpieces.

London was frequent starting point for Grand Tourists, and Paris a compulsory destination; many traveled to the Netherlands, some to Switzerland and Germany, and a very few adventurers to Spain, Greece, or Turkey. The essential place to visit, however, was Italy. The British traveler Charles Thompson spoke for many Grand Tourist when in 1744 he described himself as “being impatiently desirous of viewing a country so famous in history, a country which one gave laws to the world, and which is at present the greatest school of music and painting, contains the noblest productions of sculpture and architecture, and is filled with cabinets of rarities, and collections of all kinds of historical relice”. Within Italy, the great focus was Rome, those ancient ruins and more recent achievements were shown to every Grand Tourist. Panini’s Ancient Rome and Modem Rome represent the sights most prized, including celebrated Greco-Rome statues and views of famous ruins, fountains, and churches. Since there were few museums anywhere in Europe before the close of the eighteenth century, Grand Tourists often saw paintings and sculptures by gaining admission to private collections, ad many were eager to acquire examples of a Greco-Rome and Italian art for their own collections.

In England, where architecture was increasingly seen as an aristocratic pursuit, noblemen often

School children around the world are being exposed on a daily basis to cigarette advertising and promotions by a tobacco industry that needs to recruit the young to maintain its vast profits.

A major investigation in more than 22 countries across four continents by campaigners and experts has found cigarettes or promotions on display close to sweets, drinks or stationery in shops just outside schools, and often at the eye line of children.

ELECTRICITY was once generated where it was used; now it comes from the grid

So it is with computing power, once the province of mainframes and personal computers, and now moving into the “cloud” –networks of data centres that use the internet to supply all kinds of services, from e-mail and social networks to data storage and analysis.

The rise of cloud computing is rapid and causing huge disruption(扰乱)in the tech industry. The old guard is suffering: this week’s $67 billion merger between Dell and EMC, makers of computer and storage devices respectively, was a marriage forced by the rise of cloud. Disruptive newcomers are blooming:if Amazon’s cloud-computing unit were a stand-alone public company, it would probably be worth almost as much as Dell and EMC combined.

The gains for customers have been equally dramatic. Compared with older IT systems, cloud computing is often much cheaper. It adds tremendous flexibility: firms that need more computing capacity no longer have to spend weeds adding new servers and installing software. In the cloud they can get hold of it in minutes. Their applications can be updated continually rather than just every few mouths. Individual users can reach their e-mails, files and photos from any device, and cloud services also tend to be more secure, since providers know better than their customers how to protect their computing systems against hackers(黑客).

But cloud computing makes one enduring problem worse : in the old IT world, once a firm or a consumer had decided on an operating system or database, it was difficult and costly to switch to another, in the cloud this “lock in “ is even worse. Cloud providers go to great lengths to make it easy to upload data. They accumulate huge amounts of complex information, which cannot easily be moved to an alternative provider.

Cloud firms also create a world of interconnected services, software and devices, which is convenient but only for as long as you don’t venture outside their universe. Being locked in to a provider is risky: firms can start to turn up the heat by increasing prices; and if a cloud provider goes bankrupt, its customers may have trouble getting their data back.

These risks have already let to a debate about whether the cloud needs stricter regulation. Some European politicians want to force cloud providers to ensure that data can be moved between them. That is too heavy-handed, not least because firm rules will hold back innovation in wat is still a young industry. The history of computing suggests that common standards may well emerge naturally in response to customers’ demands---just as in personal computers, where it is now much easier to use the same files on different systems.

23.Which of the following is the best definition of “cloud”?

B .It allows long-distance protection over one’s system

C .It involves various services provided via the Internet

D .It provides data storage and analysis where it is used. 24.Why does the author mention the merger between Dell and EMC? A .It’s an example of what cloud computing do to us. B .It’s an illustration of how successful and promising cloud is. C .It’s an explanation of why cloud has become a disruption. D .It’s a lesson for other makers of computers and storage devices. 25.Which of the following is considered the worst problem of cloud service so far? A .Customers may loser their data if they switch to a new system. B .Customers may be charged big money to get immediate services. C .Customers have to be loyal to their cloud provider no matter what. D .Customers have to be prepared for the bankruptcy of cloud providers. 26.What is most likely the future of cloud computing services according to the passage? A .Customers are likely to enjoy freer and more flexible services. B .Stricter regulation is likely to be applied the tach industry. C .Cloud firms are likely to charge more for their data services. D .Common standards are likely to emerge in European market. Since ancient Greece, people have used zodiac signs to judge a person’s character traits. 27. According to The Washington Post, a new study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior on Sept 17, could tell us something more about who we are. It identified four personality types: reserved, role models, average and self-centered. 28. All these are related to the five main personality traits everyone’s believed to possess: extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness. Researchers, with the aid of computer software found that self-centered people scored higher on extroversion, but lower than average on the other four traits. ‘These are people you don’t want to hang out with,’ co -author William Revelle, professor of psychology, told the

如for example, first, second…

They accumulate huge amounts of complex information, which cannot easily be moved to an alternative provider.(它们积累了大量复杂的信息,而这些

故选A。

Since ancient Greece, people have used zodiac signs to judge a person’s character traits.(从古希腊开始,人们就用星座来判断一个人的性格特征。)

All these are related to the five main personality traits everyone’s believed to possess: extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness.(所有这些都与人们普遍认为的五大性格特征有关:外向、随和、尽责、情绪稳定和开放。)

Members of the reserved group were lacking in openness and extroversion, but were more agreeable and conscientious.(保守组的成员缺乏开放性和外向性,但更随和、更认真。)

For example, role models are usually seniors, while the traits of the self-centered type mainly fall in teenage males.(例如,榜样通常是老年人,而以自我为中心类型的特征主要落在十几岁的男性身上。)
