The Mona Lisa

Leonardo d a Vinci‘s painting, the Mona Lisa, is the most famous piece of art in the history of the world and is said to be universally recognisable. Begun in 1504 and finished in 1515, it is believed to be flawless in its details and virtually perfect.

Even before da Vinci had completed his masterpiece, it was already being copied by other artists. The Mona Lisa revolutionized painting. For a start, it was the first portrait that showed its subject from only the waist up; previous portraits of people were always full length. Also, the background in the painting is imaginary, describing a line of distant hills, which again was different from previous works. The painting is extraordinarily vivid and, on seeing it, many say it‘s like a living person. The smile on

the woman is often discussed, with many people seeing it in different ways.

The identity of the painting‘s female subject is also a matter of debate, some believing her to be the wife of a rich Italian silk merchant, while others believe her to be a self-portrait of Leonardo or a construct of his imagination.

In the 1530s, the painting was bought by the king of France and in the 1650s it was moved to the Louvre Museum in Paris. Then, from 1800, it hung in Napoleon Bonaparte‘s bedroom for four years before eventually returning to the museum. In 1911, it was stolen from the Louvre by an employee, who was caught trying to sell it, and then in 1956 it was seriously damaged in an acid attack. In 1963, it toured the U.S., where it was viewed by over a million people, a figure that doubled on its 1974 tour of Tokyo and Moscow.

The momentum of fame, coupled with the painting‘s colorful history, has made the Mona Lisa priceless. Its current value is estimated as being somewhere in the vicinity of $1.5 billion. The painting now hangs behind glass in the Louvre, where it is viewed by thousands of people every year.

On the afternoon of December 5, 1872, the sailing ship Dei Gratia was gliding calmly across the Atlantic towards Portugal. The weather was fair, and Dei Gratia’s captain, David Morehouse, was surprised to look out and see a ship he recognized as the Mary Celeste. This ship had left New York City a week before him, so it should have been far ahead. As he watched, Morehouse saw the Mary Celest e swing around suddenly in the wind as if out of control. This was very strange, for he knew the Mary Celeste‘s captain, Benjamin Briggs, was a good seaman. He tried hailing but there was only silence.

For two hours, Morehouse watched the Mary Celeste move strangely in the water. Eventually, the greatly concerned Morehouse sent a team of his best men across in a small boat to the other ship to offer help. Climbing aboard, they found the Mary Celeste absolutely empty.

There was no sign of Captain Briggs, his wife Sarah, their two-year-old daughter, or the crew. Yet the ship appeared to be in good condition. Where were they all? That question has puzzled people ever since...

After discovering the Mary Celeste was empty, Morehouse put three men on board. In a sad mood, they sailed her on to the south of Spain. Immediately, an investigation was begun to discover what happened. As was the custom at that time for ships found abandoned at sea, Morehouse expected to be given ownership of the Mary Celeste, but soon found himself in front of a judge — since the investigator did not believe his story. The court suspected he and his sailors had killed Captain Brigg, his family and men so they could claim the Mary Celeste as their own property. He was eventually cleared of the charges, but the inquiry came to no firm conclusion. So what did happen?

When Charles Moore sailed his 50-foot boat through one of the least-visited parts of the Pacific Ocean in 1997, he was shocked to find plastic rubbish everywhere.

This discovery of the ?Great Pacific Garbage Patch‘ – a huge area of the central Pacific where human-produced rubbish collects because of ocean movements –set Moore off on a mission to measure, identify and stop the plastic pollution of the ocean.

Fifteen years later, Moore‘s mission has produced several scientific papers, documentary films, many television programmes and now a book.

―I wasn‘t the first to discover the problem of plastic trash in the ocean and I wasn‘t the first to study it,‖ he writes in his new book, Plastic Ocean. ―But maybe I was the first to freak out about it.‖

And freak out he certainly does. Chapter by chapter, Moore describes his growing shock at the amount of plastic rubbish in the ocean and how it gets there. He also writes about the suffering of seabirds and other animals caught in fishing nets or plastic bags. And he even suggests that the small pieces of plastic that are accidentally eaten by some fish may carry poisons that then enter the food chain.

In the end, however, many readers – especially those with an interest in science –are likely to find Moore‘s arguments unconvincing. Partly, this is because his book is poorly organized. But the biggest problem is that the ideas in Plastic Ocean are not well argued.

As Moore admits, he decided that plastic rubbish was a very bad thing long before he gathered any evidence of damage to sea life. And he also often makes unfounded conclusions. He may be right, but readers who are looking of strong eviden ce and conclusions based on facts won‘t find it in this book.
