1.《Forrest Gump》

Forrest Gump grows up in the county of Greenbow, Alabama. He lives with his mom, who is a real smart and strong woman. Although Forrest’s IQ is only 75, his mom m anages to let him have the finest education, and always tell him “You are no differen t”. In school, Forrest meets a girl named Jenny, and they become best friends. Unde r Jenny’s encouragement, Forrest discovers his ability to run like the wind blows. Fort unately, this ability gives him the chance to go to college where he becomes an all-star football player.

After graduation, Forrest joins the army for service in Vietnam, and he finds new frie nds Bubba and Dan. In the war, Forrest rescues many comrades, but Bubba is seriou sly wounded and dies. Lieutenant Dan, the platoon's commanding officer, is also badl y wounded and loses both legs. He chastises Forrest for saving him, insisting that he should die honorably on the battlefield instead of becoming a cripple.

When Forrest gets back from Vietnam, he is awarded the Medal of Honor for his acti ons. During the next several decades, Forrest becomes a war hero, a famous ping-pang player, a national celebrity, a successful businessman, and something of an Am erican idol. Forrest successfully realizes Bubba’s dream and help Dan discover his self -

worth. Finally, Forrest marries Jenny, and has a happy life with his son after Jenny di es.

“Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” When the first time Jenny asked Forrest to run away and the first time Forrest freed himsel f from the bondage, hope has been growing up in his mind. Though Forrest is surely a little stupid, he believes “stupid is as stupid does”, so he fears nothing and does his best. In his innocence, Forrest does what he feels he has to do, no matter the situat ions and the people around him, lead only by an inner sense of right. My heart is dee ply shocked by this “stupid” man, and I think in recent times we surely need this spiri t. So, let’s have a try now.

2.《2012》

The film 2012 tells a breathtaking story that everything on the earth is destroyed in t he year 2012, only a small number of human beings survive from the doomsday. The hero Jackson takes his children to go camping in Yellowstone National Park, whe re they meet a man named Charlie. That night, Charlie plays a video of Charles Hapg ood's theory that polar shifts and the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar predict tha t the 2012 phenomenon is going to occur. He has a map of the ark project in additio n to information about government officials and scientists from around the world wh o were murdered after planning to alert the public about the project and the upcomi ng doomsday.

After the family returns home, Jackson rents a plane to rescue his family. He collects his family and some friends as the Earth crust displacement begins, and they escape Los Angeles quickly. Learning the arks are in China, the group lands in Las Vegas, w here the group secures a bigger plane and departs for China. Eventually, Jackson an d his family successfully get on the arks.

In my opinion, this is a powerful film, and it makes me think a lot. If we are in such a situation that a disaster is surely coming, what should we do? Will we inform other people of the upcoming disaster? Will we escape first without considering other peop

le’s lives? Will we abandon our family, our friends, even our nation? The film teaches me of love, responsibility, forgiveness, and so on.

Don’t think that the plot in 2012 has been exaggerated, actually it is really based on science. Looking at our earth carefully, we have done so much damage to it. All the nations should do its best to protect our earth, because in some sense it is to protect ourselves. We need no more arks, and the doomsday will never come.

3.《The Shawshank Redemption》

For the first time I heard the name of the film, I thought that Shawshank must be th e hero’s name, but in fact it is a name of a prison, in which the hero stayed for almos t 20 years.

In early 1947, young banker Andy Dufresne is mistakenly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, and then he is put into the Shawshank prison. In prison, Andy an d Red become best friends. Using his wisdom, he brings a lot of benefits for his frien ds. For having a banker experience, the warden of the prison and the chief guard req uire Andy to make money for them by improper means, but at the same time he rec ords their guilt.

Andy makes a plan of prison break, and secretly carries it out during the prison lif

e. In a night of thunder and lightning, he escapes through the hole he dug, crawls 5

00 yards through a narrow pipe, and successfully gets the freedom. After escaping, A ndy withdraws most of the corruption money from several banks, and sends evidenc e of warden's corruption to a newspaper. Then Andy goes to Mexico, where Red and Andy are happily reunited on the beach.

Such a story may sound simple, but the truth behind the words is remarkable. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.” Andy clearl y knows that he isn’t a murderer and believes he doesn’t belong to Shawshank. Ther e is hope in Andy’s mind, and he gives hope to his friends. I really love this sentence “Get busy living or get busy dying”, Andy gets busy doing what he should do instead of wasting time. His story encourages people to fight to preserve the dignity of huma n beings, to appreciate the beauty of life, and the most importance is to keep hope f orever.

4.《The Pursuit of Happiness》

In San Francisco, 1981, the salesman Chris Gardner invests all the family savings i n portable bone-

density scanners. He believes he has made a wise decision because the scanners can give a denser picture than an x-

ray machine though it’s a little expensive. However, they do not sell as Chris imagine s, and even bring big troubles to him. As Chris goes everywhere and tries to figure o ut how to sell the scanners, his wife leaves him, he loses his house, his bank account , and credit cards. Forced to live out in the streets with his son, Chris is desperate to find a steady job.

Fortunately, Chris gets a chance to fight for a stockbroker internship position at Dean Witter. However, in the six-

month training period he will get no salary, and there are 19 other candidates for thi s only position. Meanwhile, moneyless, homeless, Chris has all sorts of difficulties wit h his son. But he is very smart and hardworking, and he never gives up. Eventually, f or his great efforts, Chris becomes a broker at Dean Witter and starts his career ther e. In 1987, Chris founds the investment firm Gardner Rich and becomes a successful businessman.

There are so many classic lines in this great film, from which I learned a lot. “You wa nt something, go get it!” In reality, most of us have an equal opportunity, if we really want it, just do it. “People can't do something by themselves; they wanna tell you y ou can not do it.” Although we will come up against all kinds of difficulties, we must have confidence in ourselves and never give up.

In this film, I recognize another thing, which is Chris’s love to his son. Actually, all the efforts he does are not only to achieve his dream but also to give happiness to hi s son. Chris says “You have a dream, you got to protect it”.

5.《Hachiko: A Dog's Story》

Our hero, professor Parker Wilson, finds an abandoned dog at the train station and t akes it home. Parker finds that the dog is an Akita dog and names it Hachiko. Howev er, nobody comes to claim the dog, so Parker decides to keep Hachi in his family. In the following years, Parker takes good care of Hachi and trains him patiently. Hachi will accompany Parker to the train station every day and return each afternoon to gr eet him after work, they become best friends.

One day, Parker dies suddenly from a heart attack when he is teaching his music clas s, and never come back. However, Hachi remains waiting for his master lying in the s now, for several hours, until Parker's son comes to collect him. The next day, Hachi r eturns to the station and waits, remaining all day and all night. As time passes, Hachi gets older and older, and he is waiting for Parker for nine years until his death. He t eaches the local people love, compassion and above all unyielding loyalty.

The film is based on a true Japanese story and it's only natural that the film is great because the real story itself is very touching. I learned that now a bronze statue of H achiko has been set in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a per manent reminder of his devotion and love.

What is love and what is loyalty? There is no doubt that this film is full of love and lo yalty, which Hachi brings to the audiences. Someone may say “Hachi is just a dog wi thout thought and wisdom.” Yes, I can’t deny such a reality, but in many respects we human beings do no better than animals. In all, Hachi is a respected and great dog, and his pure loyalty is what we should learn.

6.《The Terminal》

Viktor Navorski, who comes from an Eastern European country Krakozhia, arrives in New York, with the purpose of achieving his father’s music dream. Unfortunately, Vik tor’s country broke out a civil war after he left, and he suddenly becomes a man with out a country. For this reason, the US airport cannot recognize Viktor, and he is deni

ed to set foot on New York. He also can't be deported so he is told by the security m anager Dixon that he has to remain in the airport until his status can be recognized. Viktor doesn't speak English very well, so he cannot talk to or understand anyone. Bu

t he somehow adapts and sets up residence in the airport, which makes Dixon who p laced him there unhappy. So he tries to get Viktor to leave but Viktor is smart and re mains in the airport, and even have a better life. Viktor makes friends with some of t he people who work in the airport and is attracted to an air hostess Amelia. Several months later, the war in Krakozhia ends, but Dixon will still not allow Viktor t o enter the United States. Finally, with the help of his friends, Viktor successfully leav es the airport, and accomplish his purpose.

About this film, I have some words to say. Firstly, I am glad to see that Viktor achiev es his father’s dream through constant efforts. Secondly, most of people are friendly, and if we have a sincere heart we will have countless friends. Thirdly, I feel a little s orry that Viktor cannot be together with Amelia, but I believe both of them will have a new life.

I can’t help saying that now I really love the actor named Tom Hanks for his perfect acting skill. From Forrest Gump to Viktor Navorski, he always seems a little stupid, b ut he finally succeeds again and again. It’s really not about fortune, and it depends o n love, sincerity, courage, persistence and so on.

7.《Brave Heart》

It is a story about a national hero of Scotland -- William Wallace.

In the 13th Century, Scotland is under the heel of King Edward I of England, who gra nted areas of land in Scotland to his nobility which they were to rule along with the t raditional privileges. In the uprising against cruel English ruler, Wallace’s father and b rother sacrifice, and he is taken abroad by his uncle to learn knowledge and skills. W hen Wallace returns home, he falls in love with his childhood lover Murron, and they marry in secret so that she doesn’t have to spend a night with the English lord. Soon after that, Wallace kills an English soldier who tries to rape Murron, and for this reas on Murron is finally executed by the lord.

Full of anger, Wallace determines to fight against the English ruler, and in response t o Wallace's exploits, people of Scotland rise in revolt against England. Although Walla ce comes up against all kinds of difficulties, he never gives up. For the betrayal of his partners, Wallace fails to defeat the English ruler. Before Wallace’s dying, the scene that he shouts loudly "Freedom!" moves everyone. After Wallace’s death, his previou s partner Bruce continues to fight and finally makes Scotland free.

In my viewpoint, at first Wallace has no intention of being a freedom fighter, he is ju st a simple man with simple desires to live in peace and raise a family. However, circ umstances make that impossible, so he has to be brave and stand out, not for the de ath of his father and wife, but for the freedom of his nation. I am really shocked by h is brave heart.

I feel a little sorry for Wallace’s death, because he cannot see for himself that the fre edom of Scotland is back again. However, his heart for freedom will last forever, and lead his people to fight against dark rulers, fight for freedom.

8.《The Day After Tomorrow》

The hero of this film, a paleoclimatologist named Jack Hall, discovers that the huge p olar ice sheet is melting quickly due to the global warming. The situation will lower o cean temperatures, and then causes a massive climate shift which brings about man

y natural disasters and eventually a new ice age. It’s too late to inform everyone in t

he nation, and when people realize the situation and try to move to the warmer sout h, the disaster has arrived. Meanwhile, Jack’s son Sam is attending an academic com petition with his friends in New York.

As Jack’s request, Sam and his friends stay in the library and burn books to get war m. Worrying about his son, Jack and his two partners set out for New York to rescue his son. Overcoming all the difficulties including the death of a partner, Jack finally ar rives in New York and finds the library. Gladly finding Sam and his friends are all aliv e, Jack embraces Sam tightly for a long time. In Mexico, the new President orders se arch and rescue teams to look for other survivors, having been given hope by the sur vival of Sam's group.

This is another disaster film, and it deeply shocked my heart again. Although there ar

e countless people die in the disaster, I believe that survivors have learned a lot, and

people all over the world will take action to protect our earth.

In addition, the relationship between Jack and Sam runs through the whole film. I w ant to say Jack is a great father, because he does what he promised his son no matt

er how difficult it is. At the same time, Sam is also a great young man, because he is

intelligent, brave and responsible. Both of them set good examples for us.

It’s a great film, not for its large investment and magnificent scenes, but for what it brings to human beings.

The film entitled Braveheart, which tells of the story of Sir William Wallace ,a Scotland’s hero in 13th century to protest against the cruel king of England, Edward I. Although the reason is seemingly a romantic revernge for his fiancée who was killed

by an English landlord. The struggle was so fierce ,bloody and magnificent that any spectator can not come to himself or herself after seeing a series of campaigns that were shown in the movie and we are most touched by the desire for freedom of Sir William Wallace on the last scene of his execution ,in which William’s sky blue eyes were shone as bright as the sky ,a metaphor for the freedom which is hopeless but

the determination was never abandoned in pursuit for it. However, one cannot

stand the spiteful rebellion of the Scottish nobles and just imagine Wallace’s disbelief and shock when he got to know that the knight of Edward I,who is most

willing to kill him in the battlefield,is the one who is most likely to become the

king of Scotland, the man who swore to stand alongside with Wallace from the majority of the Scotland’s aristocrats who suspected Wallace and kept looking down upon him.Wallace had presumed that he was his companion but the reality just showed the just opposite side of Wallce’s na?ve dream and both the hero and the audience cannot bear this betrayal from the bottom of their heats. But Wallace still chose to believe,to tolerate and to take an adventure which led to his death and the end of this poetic struggle while meantime ,setting in motion another more intensive campaigns by those who carried on Wallace’s dream to realize the freedom of Scotland.Wallace’s death is like the ringing of the be ll in the darkness of

midnight, announcing that dawn should be cast upon the ones who never halt to pursue freedom sooner or later. The scene which showed Wallace’s calling for freedom, while the executor’s axe moving ,the clouds floating, the wicked king’s last

breath and the judge’s disappointment out of expectation. “Every man dies, not every man really lives.”Wallce’s last words echoed in the midst of the air, despite the physical death and the passing of the decades of years.

The real meaning of braveheart lies on that not only we do not dare to encounter the rivals and the unfair, but also the courage to tolerate,to resist the temptation to give up in despair ,to face the genuine aspect of ourselves .

Trust, belief, struggle, determination, betrayal and of course ,the love epic ,are the images we can associate with this marvelous film and we cannot urge our passion to extol Wallace, our hatred for the wicked Edward I and those both mentally and physically delicate Scotland’s nobles.Given the fact that both these two nations are now sections of the United Kingdom, The film reminds us of the love for one’s own motherland the desire for freedom, which is the gifted nature since mankind was born with and we shall never be scared of any obstacles ,frustrations and sacrifices in our fight for freedom ,the goal generations of all classes, eras and races have been longing for and we shall never be in shortage of the courage to gain freedom

As time went on , the relationship between E.T and children was in the better condition . What's more, with the help of children ,

E.T had acquired some English communication express and could talk with them so metimes. I was happy and took for granted that he would stay on the earth and be f riends with these children for good . However, thing never went in this way . Desper

Simultaneously , owing t o the inner communication between E.T and Eillott , Eillott was the sole person who could understand E.T and try to help him as much as he could , thus Eillott was regar ded freak because of lack of understanding from his peers and teachers . Therefor ,b oth of them were put into loneliness and estrangement .

As they tried their best to get understood , children were clear of the situation and tried to help , but adults got involved and complicated all the plan . Fortunately , chil dren gave E.T a hand and assisted him in coming back home .

The film called of the abandoned innocence left behind . We are longing for the m aturity and reasons in the world , but it is not necessary to live in that way all the tim e. Sometimes, we need our heart to live our life but not our brains . Only in this way can we move on and enjoy our life both rationally and emotionally .

D re am in th e fo rm er,gr owt h in t he po st -Z oo to pia PART1:This is a great family film that everyone needs to watch because of all the teaching moments within the film. Let me phrase that: the entire movie is a teaching moment. Zootopia is a film that is all about inclusion, about putting away the stereotypes and prejudices aside to live in a better society and how negative they are, how much they blind someone to see something but hatred and anger. Dickens said it was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. In "zootopia", animals are also experiencing the best and worst of times.Their city has been modernized. They have been separated from the savage state, there is no carnivores and herbivores of chasing and killing.Courts, police, shops and all kinds of advertisements make up the the world. But the world is not perfect, and there is a variety of injustice and discrimination, while full of civilization and order.Fortunately, there are still dare to challenge the courage of the unfair. A modern urban animals, each animal in here have their own homes, Plaza Sahara desert climate, year-round cold glacier town and so on, it is like a big melting pot, the animals here Peaceful Coexistence -- whether it was an elephant or a little mouse, as long as you work hard can break some tricks. Journey to the Center of the Earth(地心游记)2008经典电影英文影评

Journey to the Center of the Earth(地心游记)2008 There is a part of me that will always have affection for a movie like "Journey to the Center of the Earth." It is a small part and steadily shrinking, but once I put on the 3-D glasses and settled in my seat, it started perking up. This is a fairly bad movie, and yet at the same time maybe about as good as it could be. There may not be an 8-year-old alive who would not love it. If I had seen it when I was 8, I would have remembered it with deep affection for all these years, until I saw it again and realized how little I really knew at that age. You are already familiar with the premise, that there is another land inside of our globe. You are familiar because the Jules Verne novel has inspired more than a dozen movies and countless TV productions, including a series, and has been ripped off by such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, who called it Pellucidar, and imagined that the Earth was hollow and there was another world on the inside surface. (You didn't ask, but yes, I own a copy of Tarzan at the Earth's Core with the original dust jacket.) In this version, Brendan Fraser stars as a geologist named Trevor, who defends the memory of his late brother, Max, who believed the center of the Earth could be reached through "volcanic tubes." Max disappeared on a mysterious expedition, which, if it involved volcanic tubes, should have been no surprise to him. Now Trevor has been asked to spend some time with his nephew, Max's son, who is named Sean (Josh Hutcherson). What with one thing and another, wouldn't you know they find themselves in Iceland, and peering down a volcanic tube. They are joined in this enterprise by Hannah (Anita Briem), who they find living in Max's former research headquarters near the volcano he was investigating. Now begins a series of adventures, in which the operative principle is: No matter how frequently or how far they fall, they will land without injury. They fall very frequently, and very far. The first drop lands them at the bottom of a deep cave, from which they cannot possibly climb, but they remain remarkably optimistic: "There must be a way out of here!" Sure enough, they find an abandoned mine shaft and climb aboard three cars of its miniature railway for a scene that will make you swear the filmmakers must have seen "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." Just like in that movie, they hurtle down the tracks at breakneck speeds; they're in three cars, on three more or less parallel tracks, leading you to wonder why three parallel tracks were constructed at great expense and bother, but just when such questions are forming, they have to (1) leap a chasm, (2) jump from one car to another, and (3) crash. It's a funny thing about that little railway: After all these years, it still has lamps hanging over the rails, and the electricity is still on. The problem of lighting an unlit world is solved in the next cave they enter, which is inhabited by cute little birds that glow in the dark. One of them makes friends with Sean, and leads them on to the big attraction -- a world bounded by a great interior sea. This world must be a terrible place to inhabit; it has man-eating and man-strangling plants, its waters harbor giant-fanged fish and fearsome sea snakes that eat them, and on the further shore is a Tyrannosaurus rex. So do the characters despair? Would you despair, if you were trapped miles below the surface in a cave and being chased by its hungry inhabitants? Of course not. There isn't a moment in the movie when anyone seems frightened, not even during a fall straight down for thousands of feet, during which they link hands like sky-divers and carry on a conversation. Trevor gets the ball rolling: "We're still falling!" I mentioned 3-D glasses earlier in the review. Yes, the movie is available in 3-D in "selected theaters." Select those theaters to avoid. With a few exceptions (such as the authentic IMAX process), 3-D remains underwhelming to me -- a distraction, a disappointment and more often than not offering a dingy picture. I guess setting your story inside the Earth is one way to explain why it always seems to need more lighting. The movie is being shown in 2-D in most theaters, and that's how I wish I had seen it. Since there's that part of me with a certain weakness for movies like this, it's possible I would have liked it more. It would have looked brighter and clearer, and the photography wouldn't have been cluttered up with all the leaping and gnashing of teeth. Then I could have appreciated the work of the plucky actors, who do a lot of things right in this movie, of which the most heroic is keeping a straight face. 1

Seven(七宗罪)1995经典电影英文影评

Seven(七宗罪)1995 David Fincher's classic tale of inventive serial killing and urban degredation, with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman on excellent form Who'd have thought? An absurd-sounding tale of a serial killer basing his crimes around the seven deadly sins, directed by the man behind the mess that was Alien3, turning out to be one of the most chilling and original thrillers of the 1990s. From the outset, through the film's brilliantly designed deliberate under-lighting - we see very little blood and guts - and muffled sound, the audience is encouraged to lean towards the screen, immerse itself in the film's unbearably grim world. Pitt is in career-making form as Mills, a simple cop moving with his sweet young wife (Paltrow) to a grim, anonymous city, determined to make a difference, to do some good. He is assigned to track down a vengeful killer, and works alongside Somerset (Freeman), a jaded, wise policeman on the verge of retirement. The two are that modern movie cliché -the mismatched pair thrown together by circumstance, who gradually learn mutual respect. But Fincher and Walker take these hackneyed ingredients, play with them in the context of a brilliantly cohesive plot, and present something consistently fresh - the police finding themselves with too much evidence, the premature unmasking of the killer - and very, very dark. 1

功夫熊猫 Or the dream factory has always been the high standard, the screen exquisite detail, vivid characters vivid, touching story twists and turns, the most important thing is it in the most simple and easy to understand that the way of a token, that is - there is no shortcut to the world and Cheats, the only winning Famen is believe in themselves.? 这个杀手不太冷 This film was absolutely amazing. I have spent hours re-watching various scenes and noticing all the perfection with which they are acted and directed. It's not the violence or action sequences that make this movie so great (although they are well done...), but rather moments like where Mathilda knocks on Leon's door. It would be so easy to just film the door opening, but instead we see light illuminating Natalie Portman's face, symbolizing something angelic. And the moment has so much more meaning.? I know a lot of people who have seen this film because they are action fans. I'm not. But I'm glad I finally found it, because it's a wonderful film in so many other ways. 哈利波特 Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. Tess(苔丝)1979经典电影英文影评

Tess(苔丝)1979 Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, which Roman Polanski has turned into a lovely, lyrical, unexpectedly delicate movie, might at first seem to be the wrong project for Mr. Polanski in every way. As a new biography of the director reports, when Tess was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, the press pointed nastily and repeatedly to the coincidence of Mr. Polanski's having made a film about a young girl's seduction by an older man, while he himself faced criminal charges for a similar offense. This would certainly seem to cast a pall over the project. So would the fact that Hardy's novel is so very deeply rooted in English landscapes, geographical and sociological, while Mr. Polanski was brought up in Poland. Finally, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is so quintessentially Victorian a story that a believable version might seem well out of any contemporary director's reach. But if an elegant, plausible, affecting Tess sounds like more than might have been expected of Mr. Polanski, let's just say he has achieved the impossible. In fact, in the process of adapting his style to suit such a sweeping and vivid novel, he has achieved something very unlike his other work. Without Mr. Polanski's name in the credits, this lush and scenic Tess could even be mistaken for the work of David Lean. In a preface to the later editions of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Mr. Hardy described the work as "an impression, not an argument." Mr. Polanski has taken a similar approach, removing the sting from both the story's morality and its melodrama. Tess Durbeyfield, the hearty country lass whose downfall begins when her father learns he had noble forebears, is sent to charm her rich D'Urberville relations. She learns that they aren't D'Urbervilles after all; instead, they have used their new money to purchase an old name. Tess charms them anyhow, so much that Alec D'Urberville, her imposter cousin, seduces and impregnates her. The seduction, like many of the film's key scenes, is presented in a manner both earthy and discreet. In this case, the action is set in a forest, where a gentle mist arises from the ground and envelops Tess just around the time when she is enveloped by Alec. Alec, as played by Leigh Lawson, is a slightly wooden character, unlike Angel Clare, Tess's later and truer lover, played with supreme radiance by Peter Firth. Long after Tess has borne and buried her illegitimate child, she finds and falls in love with this spirited soul mate. But when she marries Angel Clare and is at last ready to reveal the secret of her past, the story begins hurtling toward its final tragedy. When Tess becomes a murderer, the film offers its one distinctly Polanski-like moment—but even that scene has its fidelity to the novel. A housemaid listening at a door hears a "drip, drip, drip" sound, according to Hardy. Mr. Polanski has simply interpreted this with a typically mischievous flourish. Of all the unlikely strong points of Tess, which opens today for a weeklong engagement at the Baronet and which will reopen next year, the unlikeliest is Nastassja Kinski, who plays the title role. Miss Kinski powerfully resembles the young Ingrid Bergman, and she is altogether ravishing. But she's an odd choice for Tess: not quite vigorous enough, and maybe even too beautiful. She's an actress who can lose her magnetism and mystery if she's given a great deal to do (that was the case in an earlier film called Stay As You Are). But here, Mr. Polanski makes perfect use of her. Instead of a driving force, she becomes an echo of the land and the society around her, more passive than Hardy's Tess but linked just as unmistakably with natural forces. Miss Kinski's Tess has no inner life to speak of. But Mr. Polanski makes her surroundings so expressive that her placidity and reserve work very beautifully. Even at its nearly three-hour running time, Mr. Polanski's Tess cannot hope for anything approaching the range of the novel. But the deletions have been made wisely, and though the story loses some of its resonance it maintains its momentum. There are episodes—like one involving Tess's shabby boots and Mercy Chant, the more respectable girl who expects to marry Angel—that don't make the sense they should, and the action is fragmented at times. That's a small price to pay for the movie's essential rightness, for its congruence with the mood and manner of the novel. Mr. Polanski had to go to Normandy and rebuild Stonehenge to stage his last scene, according to this same biography. As is the case throughout his Tess, the results were worth the trouble. 1
