London Underground

Do you know when the world’s first subway was built? In 1863, the world’s first subway was built in London. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to fortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.

Do you always read newspapers over breakfast? If so, unfortunately sometime in the next century, the familiar early-newspaper on the front porch (门廊) will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You'll get up and turn on the puter newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on this brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal puter if you like. These are among the predictions from munication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, puter newspapers will unite print and broadcast reporting, and offer news and analysis with video images of news events.

Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don't need to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to puter newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.

Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with puter screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to plete the changeover because people need to buy puters and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.

28. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of puter newspapers?

A. They are cheaper than traditional newspapers.

B. They are more convenient to read.

C. You can choose the kind of voice you want to hear.

D. You can easily save information for future use.

29. It can be inferred that journalists are against puter newspapers because______.

A. they don't know how to use puters

B. they think puter newspapers take too much time to read

C. they think the new technology is bad

D. they have been trained to write for traditional newspapers

30. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. all technological changes are good

B. new technologies don't always replace old ones

C. new technologies will eventually replace old ones

D. traditional newspapers are here to stay for another century

31. What is the best title of the passage?

A. puter newspapers are well liked.

B. Newspapers of the future will be on the puter.

C. Newspapers are out of fashion.

D.

New munications technology.

Electronic equipment is more harmful than you thought. According to the latest study, the regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or puter keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence pares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology pany, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men.

It is conclude d that too much use of modern technology can damage a person’s mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular (微细胞) level, the plex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences.

Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to their social relationship. 1100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 percent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting one’s characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude.

The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will dam age a worker’s performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. panies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”

32.We can learn from the passage that “infomania” ______.

A. has a positive influence on one’s IQ

B.results in the change of

part of the brain

C. lies in the problem of lack of concentration

D. is caused by too much

use of modern technology

33.The research mentioned in the passage is most probably about ______.

A. the important function of advanced technology

B. the damage to one’s brain done by unhealthy habits

C. the relevance between IQ and use of modern technology

D. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness

34. The underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “______”.

A. examined carefully

B. copied patiently

C. corrected quickly

D. admitted freely

35. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

(CP: central point; P: point; Sp: supporting point; C: conclusion.)

A. B. C.

But theimbalance is gradually tilting — and it shows. In 2015, some of the biggest news and successes resulted from the actions of women. Here are the new faces who inspired, defied, guided or moved the world. Loretta Lynch Traditionally, the top U.S. law-enforcement official is not well-known outside of the United States, but Attorney General Loretta Lynch not only made headlines around the world, she also brought a particular kind of change that billions of people had longed for but thought was out of reach. Lynch surprised the world by taking on the entrenched(根深蒂固), corrupt officials of FIFA, the governing body of the world's most popular sport, soccer. She had the bravery to do what nobody else had dared. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf When the Ebola epidemic(蔓延) took on alarming proportions in West Africa, it was tough for Liberia, one of the centers of the crisis. She played a key role in guiding her country after cruel civil wars and received the Nobel Peace Prize for her effort. Johnson Sirleaf not only helped bring an end to the epidemic, she did something just as remarkable: She revealed her emotions and admitted her faults. When it was all over she said she had been afraid, and conceded(承认) she had made big mistakes as a result of her fear. Then she showed gratitude. Instead of collecting honors, she thanked all the people and countries who made victory against Ebola possible. Aung San Suu Kyi The symbolic Burmese leader, also a Nobel Peace Prize winner, put the skeptics and the cynics(愤世嫉俗) to shame. To those who said nonviolent resistance could not defeat a

2018年秋高二英语期中试题学生卷

高二英语期中考试题 一、阅读理解(共5大题;每小题2分,共40分) A On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man. The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever. Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim(认领)it soon." After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, "Yes, it's you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here." The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr. George Sang?" The man nodded. The violinist asked, "Did you lose something?" "It's a lottery ticket (彩票)," said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. "Is it?" he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist. The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, "At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn't you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?" The violinist said, "Although I don't have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won't be happy forever." Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us. 1.What did the young artist do at the railway station on Friday? A. He walked around the New York railway station. B. He waited for the train to Vienna. C. He came to buy a train ticket to Vienna. D. He played the violin to make some money. 2.Which of the following statements is true according to the words on the paper? A. The hat belonged to George Sang.
