Arguing with your parents is very natural for teens. Can you really travel around the world for free? Li Jun, a 17-year-old girl from Shenzhen Foreign Language School, still can’t believe her 10-day free training(训练) camp in the Alps in Switzerland last month was true!
But how did she achieve this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?
Last October, a piece of short world news in a newspaper-- “Have a chance to see the world, for free”, caught her eyes. When she asked her friends if the story was real, they laughed at her, for they thought she was day-dreaming. However, Li decided to apply(申请) online the following weekend.

Pangaea Young Explorer Selection Camp set up by South African explorer Mike Horn.
On January 11, Li left for Switzerland, with several newly bought ski-suits in her suitcase. Over the next week, she and 15 other teenagers from around the world took part in exciting training and lessons. They took day-trips up the Alps to an altitude(纬度) of 3,200 meters, went sledging(滑雪橇) at night using modern equipment. They were also encouraged to complete difficult journeys up mountains, down hills, and through forests.

Building a Bridge across the Straits
The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have become closer now after Taiwanese leaders’ visits and talks across the straits(海峡).
On May 3rd,2007, Kuomintang(国民党)Chairman Lien Chan(连战)finished his eight-day visit to the mainland.
Only two days later, another Taiwanese leader, James Soong(宋楚瑜), visited again.
Soong is Chairman of the People First Party(亲民党)in Taiwan. On his nine-day trip from May 5th to 13th, he visited Xi’an, Nanjing, Shanghai and Changsha, as well as Beijing.
Soong, 63, was born in Xiangtan, Hunan Province in 1942. He went to Taiwan with his father at the age of seven.
On May 9th, Soong will go back to Xiangtan to sweep his ancestors’ tombs. He will also meet President Hu Jintao when he arrives in Beijing on May 11th.
Soong hopes his trip can build a bridge between the two sides.“We are here to build a bridge of trust, understanding and cooperation between Taiwan and the mainland.”He said.
The two parties in Taiwan both agree with the“One China”policy and are in favor of the final unification(统一)of China.
Things continue to get better since Lien’s visit. Taiwan people can now sell more fruit in the mainland. The mainland plans to give a pair of giant pandas to Taiwan.
