Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

The California lawmakers voted Thursday to raise the legal age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21. The measure is part of a larger package of laws aimed at reducing tobacco use. If Governor Jerry Brown signs the bill, California will become the second state, after Hawaii, to raise the age limit for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products. More than 100 cities in the U.S., including New York and Boston have already raised the age limit.

A week ago, the California Assembly approved the measure, which ----in addition to raising the age limit----treats electronic cigarettes the same as tobacco products, expands smoke-free areas, increases smoking bans and allow counties to collect higher taxes on cigarettes than the 87-cent per pack state tax. The Assembly’s vote came a few days after the city of San Francisco increased the age to buy tobacco products to 21.

California lawmakers passed the bill despite lobbying(游说)from tobacco interests. The measure also faced opposition from many

Republicans, who said the state should not be involved in policing people’s personal choices. “ I don’t smoke. I don’t encourage my children to,” said Republican Assemblyman Donald Wagner. “But they’re adults, and it’s our job to treat our citizens as adults.”

But supporters of the bill say raising the age to 21 moves legally purchased to tobacco that much farther from younger kids. “This will save the medical system millions of dollars, “said Democratic Assemblyman Jim Wood. (76)”It will save thousands of lives.”A 2015 study by the Institute of Medicine “ found that if the minimum legal age to buy tobacco were raised to 21 nationwide, tobacco use would drop by 12 percent by the time today’s teens reached adulthood. In addition , there would be 223,000 fewer premature(过早的)deaths and 50, 000 fewer deaths from lung cancer.”

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

Chokwe Selassie is on a mission to help drivers avoid potholes(路面坑洼)。The Eight-grader was inspired to kick off his mission on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. “I decided I was going to do something about the pothole problem in my city,”Chokwe says. His solution: an app (手机应用)that warns drivers when there is a pothole ahead. Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. “When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted (突出显示)in red,”Chokwe says.

“And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you.”Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they encounter, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.

The app relies on current available information about the street of Jackson."It works by using the city’s 311 call system, so it uses information already stored in a database,”Chokwe

says. (79)Through the call system, citizens dial 3-1-1 to report non-emergency problems ----which include potholes. Chokwe and his friends determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test the prototype(原型)。

(80)Although the app isn’t yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The prototype remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings - battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown(推翻)or killed took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the some day they happen. Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. (76) The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit. (77) Newspapers often have information on gardening, cooking and fashion, as well as a small but very popular section on jokes and cartoons(漫画). The habit of reading newspapers is ______. A uncommon in the world B not popular in U.S.A. C widespread in the world D founded among a few families 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】

成人本科学士学位英语统一考试题及答案

成人本科学士学位英语统一考试题及答案 2011.11.05 PartⅠReading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating(迁徙的)route , can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,”said https://www.360docs.net/doc/f215023890.html,urel, an architect.(76)“It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is.” About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in the city each year. Often, they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat(栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year. (77)As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet(紫外线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available. Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. “You don't necessarily have to treat every window,”https://www.360docs.net/doc/f215023890.html,urel said. “It would be too expensive to do the whole building.”The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns. 1. What is the main idea of the passage? A. New York is a city of glass towers. B. Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds. C. New York adopted new safety standards for buildings. D. Glass towers are a new trend in the United States. 2. What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds? A. Climate change B. Habitat loss C. Lack of food D. Crashing into buildings. 3. What does the word “fixes”in the third paragraph probably mean? A. Choices B. Explanations C. Solutions D. Developments 4. _____are used in the alteration of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. A. Dot patterns B. Shades C. Nets D. Covers 5. Which of the fowling statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes. B. The Jacob K.Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of bird crashes. C. About 90,000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year. D. Unfortunately, glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages. Passage 2 Question 6 to 10 are based on the fowling passage: Today's students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F.D.R., and they live in a world where amazing innovations(革新)are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital(数字的),they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship(企业家才能)education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.

Yours, Li Hua 范文: Dear Peter, How is it going? At my school we’re talking about what we should do to be a good student. To be a polite middle school student, I think we have to do a lot of things. First,it’s important for us to speak politely. We must respect the others. When I meet someone I know , I often greet him by saying hello to him happily. We are supposed to be kind to others, warm-hearted to everyone, and generous to our friends. Second, we can’t throw rubbish everywhere. We must throw them in the rubbish bins. Littering is not a good habit. Every time I go to the park, I always pick up the litter and put it into the bin. I think if we all do so, the world will be cleaner. Another important thing is that we must follow the rules. There is no doubt that waiting in line is the important rule. I never rush into the bus. Waiting may be a happy thing. I foten feel happy when I do something that is better for us. I think being a polite middle school student is proud. Anything new at your school? Yours, Li Hua
