Passage 1
The word horsepower(马力) was first used two hundred years ago. James Watt had made the world’s first widely used steam engine. He had no way of telling people exactly how powerful it was, for at that time there were no units for measuring power.
Watt decided to find out how much work one strong horse could do in one minute. He called that unit one horsepower. With this unit he could measure the work his steam engine could do.
He discovered that a horse could lift a 3300-pound weight 10 feet in one minute. His engine could lift a 3300-pound weight 100 feet in one minute.
Because his engine did ten times as much work as the horse, Watt called it a ten horsepower engine.

Passage 2 Guilty or Not
George had stolen some money, but the police had caught him and he had been put in prison. Now his trial was about to begin, and he felt sure that he would be found guilty and sent to prison for a long time.
Then he discovered that an old friend of his was one of the members of the jury（陪审团）at his trial. Of course, he didn't tel l anybody, but he managed to see his friend secretly one day. He said to him, “Jim, I know that the jury will find me guilty of having stolen the money. I cannot hope to be found not guilty of taking it--that would be too much to expect. But I should be grateful to you for the rest of my life if you could persuade the other members of the jury to add a strong recommendation for mercy to their statement that they consider me guilty.''
''Well, George,'' answered Jim, '' I shall certainly try to do what I can for you as an old friend, but of course I can't promise anything. The other eleven people on the jury look terribly strong-minded to me.''
George said that he would quite understand if Jim was not able to do anything for him, and thanked him warmly for agreeing to help.
The trial went on, and at last the time came for the jury to decide whether George was guilty or not. It took them five hours, but in the end they found George guilty, with a strong recommendation for mercy.
Of course, George was very pleased, but he didn't have a chance to see Jim for some time after the trial. At last, however, Jim visited him in prison, and George thanked him warmly and asked him how he had managed to persuade the other members of the jury to recommend mercy.

CET4 操作规程 8：45 组 织 考 生 入 场 1、组织考生入场。监考员乙在考场门口逐一检查考生准考证、有效身份证件上的照片是 否与本人相符，检查准考证上考场号是否与本考场号相符，检查并禁止考生携带违规 物品入场。 2、监考员甲保护试卷袋、听力磁带及放音设备，指导考生在考场座位表上规定的位置签 字，指导考生按准考证上的座位号入座。 9：00 禁 止 迟 到 考 生 入 场 ， 启 封 、 发 答 题 卡 3、禁止迟到考生入场。 4、发答题卡1和答题卡2。监考员甲先向全体考生展示试卷袋及磁带密封完好。监考员 乙当众启封并核对无误后，先发答题卡1和答题卡2。 5、监考员甲指导考生按要求填涂两张答题卡。强调只能用黑色字迹签字笔在答题卡上填 写姓名、准考证号，用2B铅笔涂黑相应的信息点。提示考生暂不填写答题卡2上 试卷代号一栏。监控考场，维持考场秩序，制止考生提前答题。 9：10 考 试 开 始 6、考试正式开始。考生做试题的第一部分，即写作部分（用黑色字迹签字笔答题）。 7、监考员甲逐一核验证件，检查考生填涂是否规范。若出现问题，立即查明并处理。监 考员乙监控整个考场。 8、核验完证件后，监考员一前一后认真监考。 9：35 发 试 题 册 9、监考员乙发试题册。监考员乙将试题册背面向上放到考生桌子左上角，并要求考生 不得提前翻阅或改变试卷位置，否则按违规违纪处理。监考员甲监控考场，维持考 场秩序，制止考生提前翻阅试题册。 9：40 填 涂 缺 考 考 生 信 息 10、写作部分考试结束。命令考生打开试题册，开始做试题的第二部分，即快速阅读理 解部分，提醒考生15分钟后（即9:55）结束快速阅读理解部分的答题。 11、监考员甲在考场记录单上记录缺考考生有关信息。 9：55 12、收答题卡1。收卷期间考生不得答题，否则作违规违纪处理。监考员乙收答题卡1，监考员甲监控整个考场。 10:00 13、听力考试正式开始。监考员乙播放听力磁带。听力部分考试时，监考员乙站在放音 设备旁，以便处理设备或磁带故障等突发事件，监考员甲监控整个考场。 注：听力部分考试时，监考员原则上不要走动。若无试题、试题册的原因，监考员有权制止其他任何人在听力部分考试进行时进入考场 14、听力考试结束后，考生开始做试题的第四部分。 11:10 15、提醒考生离考试结束还有十分钟，提示考生将试题册封面上的试卷代号填涂在答题 卡2上试卷代号一栏。 11:20 16、宣布考试结束，并立即令考生停止答题。 17、监考员甲维持考场秩序，监考员乙验收各考生试题册和答题卡2(检查考生是否填写试卷代码)，清点无误后，组织考生退场（严禁考生带走试题册和答题卡）。 18、监考员甲在考场记录单上记录违规违纪考生并要求考生签字确认。 考试收尾收卷19、监考员按座位号小号在上，大号在下的顺序（包括缺考考生的答题卡）整理答题卡。装 订 密 封 20、将整理好的试题册、答题卡1和答题卡2一并带到考务办公室，经考务负责人清点 核查无误后密封。 注：①考生的答题卡1、答题卡2分别装入相应的专用袋内密封（包括缺考考生）。 ②试题册装入试卷袋内密封（包括缺考考生）。
